  5. Hardly settled weather is it, The forecasts are changing every time I look. We have decided on a shorter trip after work on Sat, I have to wait until 1400 when Dan finishes his driving lesson, then we will head out The weather will decide how far we get, but only aiming to be half way to the rips this week. If one of the lads going in the morning can call my mobile or text a weather update that would be great Radio on 6 Charlie

  10. Hi Adam That sounds good It will depend if anyone wants to join us as crew and what weather we get. Charlie
  11. Well Done Guys A great fish to end the day [or any Day], I can just imagine the excitement of trying to get the net together with the fish next to the boat. Well done Stu on taking the Club Turbot record, [and to the skipper of course] Will was certainly chuffed on the phone when I told him it had broken the record. Good effort for putting it back to carry on breeding, especially as you or Dad probably have more ways of cooking such a fish than most. Looking forward to seeing the pics Charlie
  12. Last weekend we saw Sam off from Pompey and did not get out, so we are keen to get out there. Dan and I are working Sat morning but I fancy an afternoon evening trip. LW about 1600 should give us some options. If the weather swings to a calmer day on Sunday that could change our plans and push us to the cod marks again. Does anyone fancy a trip? Sat would be eels/tope If its Sunday it may be mainly cod and anchor at slack Charlie

    Rips

Well done all for getting out there Actually Dan 7 is not a bad total when two of you are fishing an area you do not know. Get 7 on a winters day and you would be made up. Martins advice is spot on, simply following the charter boats is not IMHO the best way. Sure let them guide you to the area then look for your own fish holding areas. All those that I talk too and ourselves found the fish in tight areas, that were well worth going back over a few times in short drifts. Charlie

    Rips

It looks like one of those days with conflicting forecasts. Please remember its down to skippers and crews to make the final call, but err on the cautious safe route if in doubt. Experiance teaches you a lot, and one of the best things is when not to go, or when to admit you do not like the sea conditions and change to a safer more sheltered plan. As Rup says there are days when you just have to turn back. There will be plenty more calm days to come, and fish to go with them. Charlie Oh and its not a hint But Wendy Dan and I are off to see HMS Victory tomorrow with Sam, before he deploys on Monday. If we were not , and having checked wind guru we would be out there somewhere
  15. Thanks Paul Good to know that we did, especially just outside the shipping areas. I keep meaning to ask someone to have a look, then try again after I take the pole down, to see what diference it makes. Charlie
  16. Looks good Jim It holds more rods than my new addition, and I am sure yours is easier to reach. We have found ours to be very useful already, I have mounted a bigger radar reflector on a pole and put it up using the tubes when offshore. An anchor ball can also be put up that way when the rods are in use, i intend to fit mine to an extending boat hook for ths purpose. Charlie

    Rips

Jim I have been holding back with this because I did not want it to come over wrong, but I must advise caution before you take a small boat that distance. you will be 20 miles from shelter and the RIPS did not get that name for nothing. Its an area of banks that has a lot of overfalls when the wind is over tide. We were there on a calm day on Sunday and it was lovely, there was a warrior happily fishing amongst all the boats without any problem. The other point is fuel, carry plenty. if it roughs up and you can not maintain planning speeds you will need it, you will also do a lot of miles motoring back up to start drifts. I hope that this came over as intended, friendly advice. Just thought it best to state the obvious in advance I am sure you will not be alone if you go. Charlie

    birthday

Happy Birthday Sam Have been unable to get you on the phone today, so I hope that you enjoy your birthday even though you are onboard and at sea. Dad
  19. Looks like great "Fun" guys, better fish than we are getting at Poole. Impressed with the gear carried a GPS unit etc Charlie
  20. Dan you sound like my lads too young to feel the cold.
  21. What a great fish they can go well with those big fins Charlie
  22. Craig it is 70 miles to the Island but with fishing on route and around the island its nearer 100 on first and last day Charlie
  23. MES at Poole could look at it But it depends on the Part Ex costs, as these guys hourly rate is high, I would follow Jim's advice first if you can, contacts plugs are always a weak link. or hope that a Member with the knowledge would be able to help. Good luck Charlie
  24. Hi Steve Most of us seem to use Bruce anchors [or the cheaper copies] you can get small ones and a 5KG would do the job and can be rigged to trip. As for the fishfinder most run off 12volts so a small car battery would suffice. Transducers usually come on a lead to a plug and with a bracket for the transducer. simple to fit and then run the lead through the boat to a good place to mount the Fishfinder where it is easily seen. I have seen people with a simple board fitted with the fishfinder on the supplied bracket, the whole thing is attached to a seat with a woodworking clamp. battery under the seat with wires connected with croc clips. Works fine and can all be removed for storage and battery charging, but you need some way of securing the battery when afloat. Charlie
