On the solent forum they have a maps of areas and red dots which show specific spots and when you hover your pointer of the dot, it tells you bottom conditions and what fish to expect. Is this something we could do could have map showing poole bay for example and dots on areas and brief description of:- depth, bottom, season to target commonly caught species? This would give people a chance to see where the slate beds are or spoil ground or poole patch and a chance for them to explore them and target the species that are there? We could also have links to catch reports from those areas? so you could hover over the slate beds and see links to catch reports to see what people have caught there? Any thoughts?

the amount of wieght a reel can haul I think depends alot on the gear ratio and quality of the reel a 6500 size reel is 6.1:1 and a 7000 is 4 to 1. We have been looking for small low gear reels for ages! (Nick is trying the seven narrow spool, @

did the usual plaice hunt down the swash on sunday, not even a bite, 3 or 4 other boats out there all fishless, still a bit too early?

Me and nick have various discussions on this as I sometimes prefer the circle hooks, but we always seem to end up back to the aberdeens for general fishing. Although one point to note is that you need a short hook length (I found max 10 inches) for the circle hook to hook or you end up missing all the bites!, which goes against our experience that long traces (6ft plus) have more takes on, so is a comprise between more takes v hook ups depending on how many bites you are missing. Circle hooks also outfished aberdeens on pats for the whiting! So this year for the bream will be using the circle hooks on paternoster rigs but aberdeen style type hooks on running ledgers. Or one of each on a wessex ledger I believe veals do some very good aberdeen style hooks "big mouths" I think which when last went out on a charter teh skipper and other anglers recommended, although Mike at UK hooks is very good at suggestions and I find his sample packs very good when experimenting with new shape/size hooks, I think th octups live bait is a short shank wide gape hook which we found good however have to remember that different styles may need different hook lengths and either a running ledger/fixed lead etc to maximise catches.

Hmmm, not sure Fri 31st 1st HW is 11:24 Sat 1st, 1st HW is 10:47 (should go forward @3/4hr) Also the difference between 1st LW and 1st HW changes from @5hrs most tides of the years to only 3hrs in the first week in jan?
-
If anyone else is using a Crest Poole Harbour tide book, after a quick glance yesterday the first week in Jan 1st HW is incorrect.

Anyway tuesday has come and gone, ended up with three on the boat, Allykat of minehead, was well lumpy minced over to the nash bank?? we picked up rays on sandeels, and whiting and doggies, came out over slack and had more rays, whiting and doggies and graham had 2 straps on his size 1 paternoster whiting rig! and a whiting bit in half, came back to minehead had more whiting doggies and a solitary codling. Bloody long day cloudy rain was force 4-5 over shallow water so hard work on the legs. Ended up on the boat with blonde rays, small eyed and thornies upto 6lb, 2 straps whitingto 1 1/2 doggies and a 3lb codling and a pout. Yellow tails were best bait brought from weymouth, sandeels best for rays. The 7000 worked a treat luckliy neap tides so didnt need more than 8oz downtiding and 6oz breakaways when uptiding.

I am lucky enough to be going on a last minute charter trip outof minehead on Tue and need help on rigs/baits, I have been told to take ragworm/lug and will be fishing uptide and downtide for codling/whiting and poss bass then at slack water rays/conger. Anyone with experience from here any advice most grateful will be taking my sauveron 20-30 with a 7000 and an uptide with a 6500. Dont want to carry to many leads so any advice on hook sizes/ leads/rigs etc most appreciated

Fished Canford Cliffs last night 7 -10:30 over first high and upto 2nd hw. Nick had a 1/2lb whiting on rag tipped with maccy on a wessex ledger size 1 hooks early on, I missed a load of close in flatty bites (30-40yds) on a 1 hook high pat size 2 hook(not clipped). just over HW I managaed a 3lb 15oz bass on rag @ 120yds on a 1 hook size 1/0 clipped down (longish hooklength, and breakaway lead), best shore bass for me so far this year, I managed another bass 2lb 4oz @90 yds same rig, nick had a schoolie@ 1lb and a 3oz pout. Called it a night @ 10:30. not bad for a mid week session

A last min decision to go between the piers from the shore, we lined up where we drifting on friday and flexed the old beach casters. With our thoughts being during the daytime we caught fish @200-300yds of shore so night time of beach should be good as the fish move inshore, how wrong were we Almost perfect conditons a 2 hook pat with rag 8inch snoods, size 2 hooks, 3oz was put @40yds out for sole and flatties, a 1 hook clip down size 1 was whizzed out @120yds. they came in untouched every time. By 10:30 called it a night I managed 1 sole in close @4oz and nick blanked hey ho now remember why nick got a boat, so we could catch fish!!

Sam Try the other side of the quay, ferry way and the next slipway up for better fish, over the years (makes me sound old!) have had bass to 4lb, wrasse to 3lb and lost some good mullet, problem can be the tide and weed, evening session most productive. Also if losing a lot of kit try a one hook pat (weight o bottom) and fish shorter snoods. Live pout best for bass, we went through a phase of catching them at the haven then going to the quay and fishing with them, one evening me and my bro had 12 bass betwen 1-3lb and a 3 3/4 and a 4lb in the space of 2 hours not bad for quay fishing out of teh back of a car!! Also u will start getting some good silver eels there which go really well.

After a few weeks off for me on hols etc managed t get out with nick on nik nak last night for some fishing after work. Tried drifting had a few small bream and doggies, as darkness fell picked up an inshore pot near bournemouth rocks (durley sewer bouy) and had a few pout to 1 1/4lb and a solitary schoolie. Hey ho, good to get out

Went out saturday, drifted for maccy and had maccy, scad, pollack went out to outer patch, had, bream, doggies, wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, 1xbass, 2xtope, pollack, pout, smoothound (11x species in total) oh and a cuttle fish (used as bait on sunday!) did sunday on same mark had maccy, bream, wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, pollack, 1xbass, 1x thornback ray no doggies! fishing was consistent but not prollific maybe eve/night may be more productive but other commitments discounted that option

Weather forecast looked promising so took thursday PM off, we decided to do some drift fishing as would be less bumpy for nick and went down to southborne sewer bouy. Bagged up on maccy. Then drifted with a baited spoon I had small bream, a gurnard and a 1 3/4lb plaice. Nick blanked. I also reeled in half a live mackerel on my heavy kit after missing the tope bite! wind picked up so came into harbour as too bumpy for nick but was too much weed so called it a day in by 5.
