  1. Woman dies after car ferry plunge The Sandbanks chain ferry connects Poole to the Isle of Purbeck A 30-year-old woman has died after the car she was in plunged into the sea from a ferry slipway in Dorset. The woman, from Bournemouth, was rescued from the water by the Sandbanks chain ferry in Poole on Sunday night. Police and coastguards were both called to the scene and it took and hour to find her and pull her from the sea. She was rushed to Poole General Hospital where her condition was said to be "critical". Police said she was pronounced dead on Monday morning. Car sank The victim is expected to be identified later. The Sandbanks Ferry crew had reported seeing a black car going into the water on the Poole side, by the North Haven slipway. They warned the car was sinking after staying afloat for a few seconds, said Portland Coastguard. At the time, the ferry, which connects Poole to the Isle of Purbeck, was on the other side of the waterway and unable to assist. The coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-Solent, with infra red cameras on board, and the Portland Coastguard helicopter were scrambled, along with Sandbanks Coastguard Rescue Team and the Poole RNLI inshore and all-weather lifeboats. The car had sunk but the woman was spotted in the water at about 2100 BST. 'Difficult circumstances' She was winched to safety and resuscitated before being transferred to an ambulance. It was not known if the woman was alone in the vehicle but initial searches of the area found no-one else in the water. Bill Gibbs, Portland Coastguard watch manager, said it was a search "in very difficult circumstances". Dorset Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. A spokesman said: "Cars are very difficult to locate after sinking in the harbour entrance because of the tidal conditions. "It is possible that one object located on the seabed just outside the harbour entrance may be a car. He added that the death is not being treated as suspicious and any recovery will be a matter for the car insurers and the harbour commissioners Mad Mike
  2. I have just had a very good deal from a bloke on E-Bay that I have delt with before and found totaly reliable. Any way I have bought a Maxximus solid carbon 10/20lb boat rod, a new Abu multiplier and 300M of 20lb braid for
  3. Look for a white Seahog Samurai, if the usual format happens we will be anchored over where the fish are not! Mad Mike
  4. I have been busy for a week or so and not read the forum so I don't know what the fishing is like lately. It looks like there is a short window of calmer weather coming up next week (Tues' /Wed'). This being so, what is the recommendation for an area either inside Poole harbour or around the bay area and what should we expect to catch, bait etc? Mad Mike
  5. I tend to go along with the 'it's up to the individual' line of thought. My post was meant to promote a discussion which it seems to be doing. Accepting that the logic is probably flawed, I think that on a nice clear sunny day with low wind I would not wear a life jacket. A bit more wind and a grey sky, wind over tide and I'm in mine no fear mate! Mad Mike
  6. My fishing club says I have to have them 'aboard'. There is no rule about wearing them! Makes one think dunt it??? Most never wore car seat belts until they became compulsory, is there a message in all this? Mad Mike

    New Engine

Justa thought isn't the engine an oil injection engine ? ie you put oil in one tank and neat petrol in the main tank. If so should you be usning pre mix at all? Mad Mike
  10. Welcome Banksy, I spent some time in my very distant youth in Grimsby. I was working on The Ross Zebra one of the Ross Fisheries deep sea trawler fleet. I can still remember the site of all those (seemed like) hundreds of trawlers in the inner fish dock waiting their crews. And the changing of the muddy waters of the Humber into the cold grey of the North sea, then a day later leaving the shelter of the last of Britain and seeing (and bl00dy feeling) the huge Atlantic rollers that had been running for a couple of thousand miles with nothing to stop them. Walmart

A woman goes into Walmart to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. The Walmart salesman is standing there, wearing dark shades. She says, "Excuse me. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Madam, I'm completely blind, but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare Ugly Stik graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-lb.Test line. It's a good all-round combination, and it's on sale this week for $44." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter... I'll take it !" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Visa card," he says. As the lady bends down to pick up the card, she accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed but then realizes there is no way the blind salesman could tell it was she who had farted. The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $58.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me it was on sale for $44... How did you get to $58.50 ?" He replies, "Yes Madam, the rod and reel are $44, but the Duck Caller is $11 and the Fish Bait is $3.50." Mad Mike

    Studland Bay

The whole of Studland bay is basically a flat featureless sandy area. there is a shallow bank running across it from about a quater of the distance to Old Harry to half the distance to Old Harry. Take your starting point as the center of the Shell Bay side of Studland Bay. IMO if someone were to 'seed' the bay with some stone reefs it could become a nice inshore fishing spot. Currents are mostly weak picking up as you aproach the Training bank. At the Training bank it's self the Studland side is about half the depth of the Swash Channel side. Which I s'pose prooves that the Training Bank is doing it's job of keeping the sand in Studland and not filling up the shipping channel. On the Swash side when there is a run of tide used to be a sure fire garfish mark but they seem to be few and far between these days. When I fished from a dinghy years ago I used to catch bass regularly by trailing a Red Gill artificial eel on a long trace and rowing along very close to the line of rocks. Mad Mike
  14. There is a 70% possibility of exceptional winds on Tuesday / Wednesday next week. This will be caused by the remains of hurricane NATE currently tracking NE up the atlantic at 14mph. Current winds are in the reagion of 75mph but at it reaches cooler water these will deminish to the 40 to 50 mph area. At the moment it's track is predicted to hit NW Ireland and the NW of the UK however there is a probability that it may come across the UK on a more southerly track. Mad Mike
  15. Size does matter! I take it you are talking about a main engine. These things weigh a hell of a lot and are difficult to manouver. Once the point of balance has been lost over they go, and can easily take an arm or a leg with them if your in the way. So that's point one. Point two, if you make a booboo it's down to you to put it right. It could be as simple as having to enlarge or re drill a hole you put in the wrong place. Or it could be having to buy a new u-pathasese gaffle bracket 'cos you miss read the instructions . They cost
  16. Thank you kindly gentlemen. 62 today. Quite suprised really 'cos I did the maths wrong and thought I was 63 untill corrected by the dear lady wife. Mad Mike

  18. The Bruce has an interesting history. First designed in the 70's it's origional function was to anchor oil platforms in the North Sea. The design makes the anchour grip harder into soft sand, shingle, slate beds etc the harder it is pulled HORIZONTALY. Yet release its hold when pulled vertically upwards. I surmise that on the occasions described when a bruce did not hold it was ranged with too short an anchor rope. The pull must be horizontal for a Bruce type to work. Having taken the above into account the Bruce type IMO is the best all round anchor there is. Mad Mike
  19. Quote......Bob had his collar felt for a second time on the way back towing the ringo across the harbour - the Harbour Patrol on Jetski caught up with him!! I think it was most unkind of Martin and Charlie to radio ahead and warn the harbour patrols. I seem to remember phrases like 'Lock 'im up an' throw away the key mate' being said Any way I am told that Bobs 'donut' is not very big. I put it down to the water temperature meself. Mad Mike
  20. Are you local to Poole? If so come round and have a look at my anchor set up. I would recommend a Bruce type anchor as being more handy to use than a fishermans though. And set it up so that it can trip and turn upside down if it gets really set into something Don't go to mad on the chain as you have to haul it in as well as let it out 6' to 12' is enough 1/4" or 3/8th" dia chain. I bought SS off ebay as it's kinder on the hands (smooth) and seems to keep the deck cleaner. I use a very big SS carbine hook to clip the float line to the anchor line. The stopper that one fixes to the anchor line can be made out of a big SS ring with a length of SS rod welded across one side. The 4" ring was
  21. We went out from Poole against the flood at about 7 am and as soon as we hit the Swash channel it became apparant that it was going to be far lumpier than the forcast F2/3 SE. Sliding back in with our tail between our legs we decided to drift an area that young Sam had shown us. Not having eels we baited up with some of Alecs top class rag. First drift and bang a topping wrass for Carol. Further drifts across the same area produced a stream of bass about 2lb (all went back) and some STONKING wrass. I don't weigh the fish as it just doesn't bother me but there must have been several between 4 to 6 lb HUGE!! . The flood slowed and it went dead . Beggered about for the rest of the day with the odd checker and several tons of weed then joined a rowdy group of waterbourne tinkers at Pottery Pier for half an hour. 'Home James' was declaired by the crew so we burbled (good boy 6kts ) back to the slip, recovered and went home. Mad Mike PS was told later that one of Marks poser mates (Fairline 34 and dead posh) tried for Swanage and came back. Coast Guard reported F5 gusting F6 around headlands.
  22. Martin threatens......... I might even put me big toe in the water If so could you be described as 'Rubber dubby', 'Chum', or 'Burley'? Mad Mike PS what time?

  25. There is a tropical depression called 'LEE' that will not turn into a hurricane but as it's working it's way NE up the atlantic will give the UK some wet and windy weather in about 2 weeks time. Mad Mike Mad Mike
