  1. A Minusmullet perhaps or even Missmulleted? Mike
  2. Blue boat drives home the point......... I don't think it's actually much deeper than the water either side of it. Your damn right it isn't Many years ago a chum of mine and I fished late through an ebb and were sure I could use Wills cut to get home. We were wrong It was about 6" deeper and infact was formed by a series of long shallow 'lakes' with dry mud in between at dead low. Well in those days I smoked and so did John my mate. We discovered we had ciggies but my lighter ran out of gas and John had only 2 good matches (He was one of those annoying gits that put dead matches back in the box! ) So there we were waiting for the water to come back (2 hours time), ciggies and after 30 min' no light.................. Mans inventiveness in times of emergancy knows no bounds.... Driven by craving we eventualy came up with the (oversized) pocket O/B cigaret lighter ???? Tearing a strip of cloth from ones shirt tail, you dip it in the O/B fuel tank, remove a plug from the O/B and with one holding the plug with another bit of shirt, the other pulls the starter cord to get a spark at the plug. The second the petrol soaked rag ignites the other quickly drags a fag alight from the others now blazing hand By golly we were real men in those days Mad Mike
  3. Friday Evening...., Mullet at last! How a man does his hair is his own business Mad Mike
  4. The area past Brownsea lagoon towards the Castle (Fast flowing over sand with deep troughs and shallow rapids. Edge od Wills channel off from Pottery pier feeding the eels out on fine lines into the current 50 yds uptide of the channel edge. Ditto technique moored up ON the training bank in a Poole Canoe. Through the Haven Along the Hook sands. And I know enough to know bass drift lining when I see it Mad Mike
  5. I saw them too and had the same reaction ? ????? Mad Mike
  6. For bass advice Adam is the one to talk to. But to target them specificaly you have to be pretty dedicated, live sandeels, bait tanks and all that. Best results are drifting over certain marks with a live sandeel swimming on a very long lightly weighted trace. Harbour entrance, tide rips in the harbour, very near the training bank etc. Then there are all the marks over Christcurch way. Mad Mike
  7. Next time have the decency to pose for the picture with the camera facing the land , and idealy with two or more prominent land markes in thebackground . That way I can work out where you were and go there meself . Mad Mike
  8. Dave NO NEED TO SHOUT You'll wake up some of the older members Plenty of help here, but first tell us what size boat/engine you've got, and second what sort of tackle. It'll be a bit daft one of us goin' on about a great ray spot 6 miles out in 150 ft of water if your in a 14ft dinghy with a 4hp Seagull. Conversly if your in a super dooper Arvor with all the nobs on and a wet bar then bvgger the fishing and we'll all come for a jolly Tackle wise for general fishing around the harbour and in the bay a carp outfit would be an ideal start. Light spinning gear perch/pike will also be fine. Terminal tackle will depend on where you go so get back to us with a bit of info and I am sure you will get loads of advice and some of it might even be worth taking. Mad Mike
  9. You could be on for a mid week next week Sam. Lets see what the weather is and I'll see if I can get a note from the boss. Generaly I prefer fishing light, not too keen on 12 to 16oz of lead in 60ft + against a spring........ How heffer as the cow said I could be talked into it for a bit....... Any ideas?? Mad Mike
  10. Went out today with a the boats co-owner and his kids (Loadsa mackerel, but only kept a few) howeve on a long trip round the harbour I saw loads of commercial lads out in various places in the harbour obviously drift lining for bass. Also several in the Haven doing the same. I thought that was a no no these days???? Second thing anyone going out of Poole to watch the Red Arrows on Friday (12 noon)?? Mad Mike
  11. As Kam says........I think somewhere in Ireland you are only allow to keep 2 bass, so is some place in the USA VERY strict in FL, nth and sth CA, Mass, infact most of the eastern seaboard that I know of. Active regular (2/3 times a day) inspections of angling boats whilst they are fishing. (As my wife will tell you "georgeous male hunks in wet suits, riding jet skis) Regulations on size, season, and catch keep (if any). Penalty........???? You better believe it!!!! Confiscation of all tackle, boat , trailer, and vehicle used. All confiscated items go to the County auction sale at the end of the month. I am told there is great amusement amongst the crowd at seeing a guy trying to buy back his outfit. Apparantly these days it is pretty much self policing. The sport angler and his business is taken very seriously and as all boats are regestered and easy to identify some one will allways report an angler taking undersized/over catch limit fish. With our commercial fishing industry contracting so much because of fish quotas based on rapidly declining fish stocks, surely sport angling is well placed to be a big revenue earner for the country. Why the PTB (powers that be) prevaricate and generaly sod about lord only knows. Mad Mike (going off on one)
  12. At last some warning that going out on any watercraft needs to be takin seriously. Man jailed over water bike crash Water bikes are popular along the South coast in the summer A man has been sentenced to six months in jail after causing a jet water bike accident off the Dorset coast. Mark Goodwin, 25, from Osmington, near Weymouth, pleaded guilty to failing to keep a proper lookout while riding his bike near Weymouth beach. Judge John Beashel at Bournemouth Crown Court said he was concerned that people with no experience or training could use water bikes. Paul Facer suffered serious head injuries in the crash.
  13. INCREDIBLE NEW FISH FINDER COSTS ONLY PENNIES Instructions.... Get line and add hook plus worm on hook. Lower into sea. presence of fish indicated by tugs on line and fish on hook Mad Mike

  15. Drunk cargo skipper sent to jail The cargo ship was due to sail to Cornwall from Southampton Water A ship's skipper has been jailed for four months after being found almost four times over the drink-drive limit. Captain Vlad Dushyn, 49, was sentenced on Thursday after earlier pleading guilty to being over the limit. The court was told that coastguard surveyors boarded the cargo ship Hoo Tern on 5 July as it was about to depart Southampton for Falmouth. Dushyn, from the Ukraine, was found to have 136 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The man with command of the ship, which was carrying five other people, was not in any fit state to carry out his duties safely Neil Atkinson, Maritime and Coastguard Agency The legal limit is 35 micrograms. Sentencing Dushyn, Judge David Griffiths said: "It is plainly a serious matter for the master of a ship to be over the legal limit with the potential for risk to public safety. "This was a very serious offence for which only a custodial sentence is appropriate." Speaking after the hearing, Neil Atkinson, the attending Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyor, said: "This is a particularly bad case. "The vessel was about to sail and the man with command of the ship, which was carrying five other people, was not in any fit state to carry out his duties safely." Mad Mike
  16. The plastic coated s/s wire ones can as the plastic coating stops the air contact with the s/s. If any salt water has been conducted into contact with the wire by capilliary action through say a small abraision in the plastic, the s/s in contact with the salt water but NOT in contact with air (oxygen) will corrode. Mad Mike
  17. Burst boat trio trapped on rocks Durdle Door is one of Dorset's most recognisable landmarks A father and two young boys were found trapped on a cliff ledge when the inflatable dinghies they were in burst after they were blown onto rocks. The father had gone to look for his son and another boy when their boat drifted offshore from the beach at Durdle Door, Dorset, on Wednesday afternoon. His wife raised the alarm when he too did not return, and a lifeboat found the trio clinging to the rocks. The children were said to be suffering from shock and cuts and bruises. Portland Coastguard Acting Watch Manager Steve Williams said: "These toys can blow out to sea incredibly quickly even with light offshore breezes. "To be safe, you must tie inflatables and lilos to an adult on the shore." Mad Mike
  18. As Martin says so perfectly........talk to the owners and see them walking around with a stiff back etc. Even my warrior 195 will jar your back if driven hard. The trick is to drive to near the limit of comfort and have the best of speed in relative comfort without ending up with a broken back and ultra bright white knuckles. Being a martyr to back problems I am very conscious of this, having been with speed obsessed skippers who, if they only knew, could make their trip comfortable and enjoyable if they sacrificed maybe as little as a knot or two. My Samurai slides effortlessly over a choppy swell at about 13kts and slams like a bitch at say 17 kts and if one dares to open up to full chat is barely in the water except when it drops off a peak into a trough and lands with a spine shattering bang. I think too many boats are bought with the expectation of maximum speed being thought of far more than comfort at a reasonable sustained speed. Mad Mike
  19. Oh dear here we go again with chemistry Cast Iron and wrought iron do not corrode much in sea water. Niether does steel and high carbon steel if the salt water is STATIC. This is because the oxidisation takes place at the interface of the iron composit and the water. Once a static layer of de-oxidised water and salts is established this surface film tends to protect the interior of the metal from futher oxidisation. So Bucket experiments don't work. However in moving water the interface is constantly exposed to fresh solutions of salts and oxygen and therefore corrodes away very quickly. On that note Stainless A2 and A4 steel is only effective underwater when it is EXPOSED to fresh supplies (A FLOW) of salt water. It corrodes for a past time when in a situation that excludes water FLOW. ie Inside a rudder stock bearing or similar Mad Mike
  20. Not sure that is a Mullet as we know them. Over in the Keys and intercostal gulf waters they call them 'Ladyfish' same family as the 'Bonehead'. Fight like fury and loads of tailwalking but VERY slimey to unhook. Mad Mike

  22. Angler floored by monster catch The catch was verified before the anglers posed for photos Enlarge Image A fisherman's holiday that ended with a monster catch in Spain left him reeling from the weight of his 7ft 7ins record-breaking haul. When the 212lb catfish took the bait and Duncan Rooke, a 32-year-old gas engineer from Surrey, picked up his rod, he said the weight was "obscene". He said five people were needed to help bring the 15-stone fish on to the banks of the Ebro, near Barcelona, in July. "It dragged me down the rocks. I nearly went in. God knows how I didn't." The life and loves of a catfish The wels catfish has a huge mouth and six whiskers It grips its prey with hundreds of soft, sandpaper-like teeth Putting your arm into a catfish mouth is said to be safe A scavenger, it likes shellfish, but sometimes eats fish Larger specimens have been known to eat frogs and snakes It is the job of the male catfish to guard eggs until they hatch The female wels catfish took the bait of two halibut pellets at about 2130 BST on 6 July at the end of a week-long fishing holiday. "When you hook one they are just unbelievable," said Mr Rooke, who lives in Woking. "I knew I was toppling and I just let my weight go backwards and fell. "Then it pulled me back on to my feet." He said: "They are scary things when you catch them. "You have to grab their bottom jaw. The anglers kept the fish for more than an hour before letting it go "They will shake their head, do a death roll like a crocodile. "It can dislocate your arm. You just have to keep hold of it. "They just close their mouth and hold on and try to take you back in with them." He said he stood in the river holding on to his catch for more than an hour. During that time the anglers weighed the fish and had the catch independently witnessed before they posed for photographs. The proud fisherman - who weighed a stone less than his catch - burped the fish and rubbed its stomach before sending it back into the river. "You have to make sure they get plenty of water in their gills and get rid of all the air out of their stomachs," he said. According to the Catfish Conservation Group, the largest freshwater fish previously caught by a Briton weighed in at 211lb Mad Mike
  23. Exhaust or water vapour? How hot was the engine block? If very hot (too hot to touch) you may have a jammed thermostat. The engine should run at a warm to nearly hot temp'. It is easy to confuse water vapour with exhaust gas....... For a quick diagnosis try a friend of mine Sam (Trickett Marine) who will come round to yours .....07810 561520. Mad Mike
  24. Were you around the Ledge about 8:30/9 ish with a grey haired bloke on board (Paul D?) ? Mad Mike
