wotu2uk
Went out for a few hours from lunchtime, just to outer Poole Patch, smooth going out, had to remember that the 10 knot limit was back in force. Seems to take forever to get to the chain ferry. Very pleasant afternoon fishing, two rods, one with half a (frozen) mackerel in vague hope of something big, other super light with a string of worm baited hokai ( size 8). End result was two pollack, similar size, larger one just a shade over two pounds, both returned. Mackerel bait mashed but probably crabs. No bites. Slower return for the 4:30 bridge lift, lots of spray over the windscreen, wind against tide, and Rosie One has no wipers (or anywhere to fit them). Back on the pontoon, cleaning up the boat and tackle, succeeded in putting one of the nice, new season, extra sharp hokais through the back of my knee, just where I could not see it properly. Didn't even feel it at first, until I found that I was trapped at the stern of the boat. Luckily a nearby boat owner came to my rescue and cut the trace, so freeing me. Spent five hours in the A&E in Poole hospital before the five minute procedure to remove the hook, giving me two holes in leg instead of one. All in all, an interesting day John
Graham Nash
I would nomally say "at least you were out" but I'm sure the by the end of your day you would rather NOT have been out.
Mike Fox
Well done for getting out John, I tried the Patches earlier on Sunday, and failed to find the pollack despite trying for them. Bad news re the hook. I've heard various stories about trying to extract them when out at sea, but not heard too many successes, and I don't know of any "foolproof" techniques. Wincing here at the thought! Guess the good news was it didn't happen while out there solo. Mike
petesnr
Have had two incidents with hooks past the barb. One was a 3/0 straight in the thumb. it was an old trace tangled with the anchor rope and I was left with the weight of the anchor and chain holding the hook into my digit. Decided against the five hours at A and E so got the mole grips on the hook and tried to pull directly out but could not pull hard enough as thumb just moved with grips as I pulled. In the end I got crew to hold my thumb and with one almighty wrench I tore it out. For ten minutes afterwards I regretted being alive but survived the experience. Second incident involved a shrimp rig hook in the hand of youngster who came out with his dad one evening last year. I explained that we would have to go to hospital and the lad said no he wanted to remain out fishing so I the suggested that his dad pulled it out. The youngster said no way to his dad but could I do it? I was not keen as you can imagine but eventually I pushed the hook against its bend to increase the size of the hole and it came straight out with a sharp pull. The lad was as good as gold and I havent been sued yet. Petesnr

Jim
I'm sitting here cringing at these stories. My Brother's son used to come out on my old boat with me. He was a NIGHTMARE. Very nearly hooked people many times. Scary ! Jim

Rob
Craig, I know when to keep quiet - I have done my bit for the next few months. Just a bit sad you left it at the DD!!! Though by the sounds of it, it will be seen again! Rob
Mike Fox
I remember an old tip to remove a hook from a person that I heard about years ago...but never witnessed it. Apparently, if you get a length of mono of a suitable thickness for the barb size, and whip it around the hook shank tightly, then slide it down towards the barb (jiggling as necessary) you can effectively mask the barb with the first few coils of whipped line. Then instead of a smooth shank and nasty barb, you have a slightly ridged shank and hidden barb...and it all comes out cleanly. Allegedly. Anyone ever seen this done...in the flesh so to speak ? great white
Hard luck with the hook john, those small feathers are super sharp and an accident waiting to happen Ref the windowns/screen have you tried rainX, if the material is right its an excellent way of getting the droplets to run off. You need to follow the instructions and renew every few weeks but I only had 1 wiper on great white and used it on the other three windows to great effect. Paul J
The old visit A&E with a hook in yourself trick. I think my pride was hurt more than my finger PJ
wotu2uk
Thanks for the suggestion, charlie, but my screen is Perspex, and rainex causes micro-cracking in plastics, which fogs up the screen permanently. I WILL solve the wiper issue in time John
niggle
John a quality polish that is used on paint work or fibreglass works a treat,so good that I don't use the wiper for several weeks after it's applied Nige
Deep Sea Dean
On a night beach fishing in the harbour a few years back the guy I was fishing with fluffed a cast and the weight stuck in the mud. He yanked it free but it flew back towards him and the bottom hook of his three hook rig went straight through the middle of his nose! He was very lucky it didn't end up in his eye and the weight missed him but it was left to me the try and unhook him in pitch black. Ended up cutting the barbed end off and threading the hook through, not nice with rather a lot of blood but he was a lucky chap!
Rob
My biggest catch was Tony Deavin! At the end of a trip he passed me the rods (his and mine) which were all still setup! A sakuma circle went in and out of his finger like hot knife etc. (TBH I was impressed with their hooking power! Tony, not so much!). Anyhow, snipped off the barb and removed the hook. I think being ultra sharp and clean meant that by the evening Tony couldn't even see the entry \ exit wound! Better that than one of Tony's big ole rusty hooks!!! It made the idea of having some good quality heavy duty snips onboard an essential! I haev these Fox ones and they go through the biggest 10/0 hook like it isn't there! Infact I was using them to shorten some bolts last weekend! They do go a bit rusty (can't be stainless as too soft) but mine are still excellent: Fox Extra Long Side Cutters The Fox Extra Long Needle Pliers are excellent too, stainless-ish too! Paul D
Fishing with PJ I stuck a sabiki into my finger past the barb. Decided to push further in and bend it around so that the point came back out my thumb from the inside, then cut the barb off with some pliers ( good job PJ is well equipped ) and then pulled the hook back out the way it went in. Stung a bit but wasnt too bad considering
petesnr
Nice to see catch and release in action. All seem to have survived having hooks pulled out and have lived to get hooks in them again. Should be publicised to the antis!!! Petesnr
