George's PB Bass

George took a cracking 11lb 6oz bass yesterday on a whole launce freelined on a 6/0 on fluorocarbon trace, christening his new Kenzaki 6lb class and 7000i in style. It was a great scrap, and George was keen to release it. It stayed in the net for 5 minutes after weighing, regaining it's strength, but refused to leave. Eventually I grabbed it by the tail, and pointed it downwards, and with a kick from it's massive tail, it was gone.

As a little background, we had arrived at Carteret (in cub waters!) a few hours earlier, and had groundbaited extensively for the local mullet, but they were refusing floating and sinking bread. I had a half a dozen mackerel from fishing earlier, and filletted them to save space in the fridge. The frames were slid into an old onion sack, and lowered over the side to add to the groundbait trail.

George saw the bass swirling next to the boat, and I lobbed some chunked launce towards it, and George saw the pieces taken leisurely. He lip-hooked a dead launce (fridged in a plasticmilk carton from earlier), and flicked it in front of the cruising bass, which it took first time.

It had multiple powerful runs and dives, but George eventually brought it to the net, and safety. IT went a steady 11lb 6 oz on digital scales, and eventually went back strongly.

Well done George! A fish to remember!!

Any video of the epic struggle???

I bet the French thought you mad to return her!! Well done again!

A FOTM contender no doubt! Send pics to BFM too, we haven't had a club member with a fish in there for a while!

Great fish George well done mate

I bet Mum and Dad were as excited as you.

It may take a few years to beat that one or you may do it today.

Great to read that it swam away strong, it must have a charmed life to grow that big in French waters.

Brilliant fish George, Well done!!!

I haven't been back to Carteret for some 30 years! Went there on holiday as a kiddy and loved the place. No marina there then, just a sandy estuary full of mullet, a cracking market and wonderful sea food restaurant along with one of the best surf beaches a ten year old boy with a polystyrene surfboard could wish for.

Carteret has a marina now Tom, a lovely modern one, I'd guess it berths around 200 boats. It has a tidal cill ensuring water always but only access for around 6 hours over HW.

I'm quite keen on taking JV out there next year for a week, it's a lovely place.

Hi all,

Thank you for the kind words, I'm pleased that I have finally joined the 'big bass club' and even more pleased that it went back so strongly. Also, I have finally broken in my new kenzaki!! biggrin.gif

Regarding the pictures, I'm affraid that it will not be possible to submit them untill we return to the UK due to not having the correct camera cable onboard.

Thanks again

George
