Hi all,

Bad news i'm afraid, my boat got done over on its mooring at Cobbs the other week. The really irritating thing is that I was around the boat in the marina at the time.

I'm not sure how they got in as there is no real sign of forced entry and I'm usually very careful about locking the boat when I pop off to the bar/toilet/mates boat. The only thing they took was my iPad which was in my travel bag on the floor next to the main berth. They declined to take the brand new portable VHF in the locker and other bits, just the ipad.

The thing that get's me is not just that we have all our photo's on there as well as my wife's email but that sickening feeling in the stomach that someone has been rooting round our personal stuff on our boat. sick.gif

Just make sure you take extra care with your boat security, hopefully my insurance will cover the iPad.

That's horrible to hear Andrew.

I've just moved to A Pontoon at Cobbs Quay, and pass Court Jester and White Magic on the way to my berth. If you're on A as well, I will keep an eye out for you in future whenever I'm down.

If you're on a different pontoon, perhaps you can find a few other club members there to keep an eye out for you on a "like for like" basis ?

Sorry to hear that I used to be on F Pontoon and got broken into it is a pain. In my case a few years ago the police were quite good and came and finger printed the boat, perhaps they had someone in mind?

Which Pontoon are you on?

Check first with the Marina Office to see if they can spot something on their CCTV

They are very keen to stop this kind of thing happening as it is bad publicity

Please ensure you enable a pass code on your smart devices. At work I manage MDM solution which allows me to remote lock, unlock and wipe iOS devices and Blackberrys.

A friend's wife recently lost a handbag, keys, car and iPhone. The scroat has been on her Facebook and in her email which, contained all sorts of banking, password reminders on emails etc etc. a pass code that locked the device every 5 or 10 minutes would have solved this issue. Cancelling the data contract / sim had no effect as the thief was connecting it to wifi. There are so many of these devices being stolen that the police are not interested. In this case a car was stolen but, they still weren't interested in tracing the phone to find the car!

If ou don't lock your device ou may as well just give out your email password!

Hi Mike,

I just moved from F pontoon to B pontoon as I thought it would be more secure and more convenient, wrong.....

Would be great to meet other club members, mine is the Merry Fisher on B19.

Hi Neal,

I did ask them and they said they would look into it.

I haven't heard anything yet so I'll chase up later in the week.

Hi Rob,

This is good advice, just a week to late for me.......

Unfortunately the git who has got it has full access to my wife's emails, just hoping she didn't have any passwords or financials on email.

If you think it might be connecting to the web via wifi or similar - delete\archive all her email and hope that the ipad will sync, thus deleting all that data!

Then, change the email password! (if you have already changed the email password - do the above and then change the pw back to what it was to allow the sync).

Might it be possible that MDL could put all pontoon moored club members on the same or an adjacent pontoon to assist with each other's security. MDL could be receptive to such a suggestion in the current circumstances.

I deliberatly dont have my email synck to my ipod for the reasons above.

We have only ever had stuff nicked off our boat in poole (the throttle control) but the same day as another boat had a chainsaw used to take off the engine. I feel confident at portland leaving gear on board due to the 24hr secutity but whilst in poole this summer i will take everything off

Andrew,

Will try to identify B19 from A pontoon - you should be stern on and so visible.

I note you don't have your boat name on your profile! Might make it easier for other club members to look out for you as well !
