My mate Phil and I are just going to join the club as we think that the inner harbour would be the best place for us to safely launch and manoeuvre around whilst we learn the ropes of controlling our small 14 x 6 open topped boat, plus catch a few fish along the way.

We're hoping that although it seems the majority of club members have already moved on to larger boats for outside harbour use at some stage maybe you were where we are now so may be able to help with basic questions to get us started.

At the mo we have a 15 hp Johnson tiller controlled engine and are unsure whether to buy a 5 hp emergency engine or whether it best to use the 15 hp as our safety and buy a 30 or 40 hp in order that

Not only can we get in quicker should the weather turn against us,but once we are more confident in our abilities we mAy consider going outside the harbour to some local marks that are within out small boats capabilities.

I'm afraid Phil is away working all week every week so he will rely on me to ask these inane questions

As he isn't online.

Cheers for any help

I certainly started using small boats within Poole Harbour as did many others so most of us have been where you are

You first need to tell us what make of boat you have as all manufacturers give a size for maximum hp engine to be used on their boats, if you don't have that a photo would help identify what's needed.  You need to consider this as if you were to go over the boats rated hp you could invalidate your insurance.  If you intend never to go outside the harbour then 15hp is more than adequate as the speed limit within PH is 10 knots for the summer months

If the 15 is reliable stick with that until you've learned the ropes and given the boat some time on the water.

An auxiliary is a good idea if its reliable, a non functioning one is worse than not having one( imo)

Life jackets and a vhf will be priorities - and lots of mates in a good club like this

Hi Gary

A couple of questions:

1. What make of boat is it?

2. Is it a displacement of planning hull?

If it's displacement, there's no benefit in going bigger, you'll be limited by the boats' hull speed.

As Martin said, a photo would help.

Brian if you don't mind ping me your mobile number I'll try and send a picky of the boat type to you ,I'm sorry to say I don't know it's model type name or hull type ,anyway I'll get some pictures loaded somehow so that we can sort out the best options.
