Rob
So, I have a Yam and the engine lift motor housing is steel and prone to rusting. I have once refurbed it but the rust came back. With a new part being quoted at £480-£520 and pattern part c.£230 I was after ideas. Anyway, I got one from the US at a good price and it needs painting, it came primed. Advice please on the approach I should take? I have yam blue/ great and top coat, but I am after the best protection I can get, not fussed about the colour. Being steel and having magnets inside I think power coating is off the menu, or is it? Should I use 2 pack epoxy? If so where can I get the best materials or have it done? Thanks, Rob

Bramble banker
So if it's been primed, is it better to do another 2/3 coats and same with the top coat? I think as long as it has no cracks or damage there for making it sealed I don't think you can do any better... If you need or would like to resin it I've got loads for albatross refit. Jim
Hi Rob, Can it not be Galvanised ? ? _ _ or I have some primer that is very heavy because of the zinc content. You're welcome to borrow it. Jim Bramble banker

Brian
Can't the magnets be removed?
Rob
No Brian, they appear to be epoxied in!
Rob
So, International Paints have got back to me with advice to use the following: Interprotect Epoxy Primer and the associated topcoat is Perfection (two-pack polyurethane). Does anybody have any of these open as i need about 20ml of each (5ml per coat) and i don't want to but 750ml! Rob
Wedger
Rob, I have some Perfection I think - which you are welcome to. I'll give you a pack but try a sample from your packfirst to make sure as it is dated. The last few were spot on! T
Rob
Ok, do I have gone down the BiltHamber route. Products made in the UK! And I spoke to one the the technical bods and got some great advice etc etc! Superb service. This is what I have bought: http://www.bilthamber.com/epoxy-mastic "Suitable for above and below waterline use in marine environments" Looks like it has been well designed for use on fresh metal and or rusty / corroded if preceded with their correct treatment. They do a zinc rich primer too and the epoxy itself has "pure zinc phosphate" in it - not sure what that's all about but it advises it gives unparalleled rust and corrosion proofing! I know Charlie A had good results with their rust conversion products on his trailer / brake hubs etc. charlieannear and Ian.Jones
Rob
Just got the boat back on the drive. Today I changed the cambelt, been meaning to for 18 months and just thought I needed to get on with it. Had to make a couple of tools to assist in the removal of the flywheel, Heath Robinson but it worked!!! Must get this motor housing sorted this week. She needs a scrub and to get some maccy and bass slime on her! charlieannear, Bramble banker and Stuie
