Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Well I did it! Plonker ! 🤪 Over half a tank of unleaded in a Diesel. Anyone know someone who will come to my house & drain it all without ripping me off ? Brian and sparky 2 Quote
Brian Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 I put £99 pounds worth of Unleaded in my Discovery. Had it picked up and taken to Nigel at Nuffield. Jim 1 Quote
Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 RAC will tow me 10 miles so it's doable. I could do it myself but would need lots of containers and make a mess in the drive. Quote
Brian Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Cost £187 plus the cost of getting it to Nuffield. Jim 1 Quote
Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 Plus the wasted tank of fuel. Plus the embarrassment. Saw a sign once: " Of all the things I've lost . . . . . . . I miss my Marbles most of all " I guess it's my age ! 🤪 Bramble banker and fisherman1055 2 Quote
Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 Jackie says it's worth a call to the insurance to see if I'm covered. Always worth a try I suppose. Quote

Ian.Jones Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Jim. You should be covered on your insurance, but check whether it is worth a claim v excess. Remember that if you inform them then don’t claim, it will still count as an “event” that would effect your future premium. Hope it gets sorted. Ian Jim 1 Quote
Newboy Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 Why don't you siphon most of the fuel out first then it will only be a small amount to drain. Jim 1 Quote

Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 And I think it tastes bloody awful too. Quote
Jim Posted April 16, 2021 Author Report Posted April 16, 2021 Don't know what happens with the insurance. I'm on protected no claims but that's never as good as it sounds. Quote

overdraft Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 I’ve done this and actually drove the car, I was advised to get as much diesel into the tank as possible and keep filling it up as the level drops, never had a problem and that car has now gone 450,000km, petrol into diesel is not good however !! Have to say I did this many years ago in an aged Renault estate, stopped at £20, got the engine going and drove it out, topping up with diesel every day. I think I was lucky. Terry. Jim 1 Quote

I think you can take it to the household recycling centre or have lots of BBQ😂. Petrol is lighter than diesel so it should be on top when siphoning off leaving diesel on the bottom. Once you removed enough petrol, you can just top it up with diesel and keep it top up until you get rid of all the spoiled fuel. Jim 1 Quote
Newboy Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 If you have a fuel pump laying around you can use it to siphon the fuel out without drinking it. Jim 1 Quote
Brian Posted April 16, 2021 Report Posted April 16, 2021 How far did you drive it? I was lucky, I drove less than a mile before I realised. Jim 1 Quote

Steve S Posted April 17, 2021 Report Posted April 17, 2021 Like others, I put a 5 litres or so of petrol in once before realising, I filled it up with diesel then just ran the car, I could feel the difference but it ran ok, did another diesel top up later. Car ran fine afterwards. Half a tank is a bit much. If I was you I would buy a siphon and some plastic tanks to drain the lot in. What you can't get out won't be a problem. You then have some cans of diesel/ petrol mix. Jim 1 Quote
Jim Posted April 17, 2021 Author Report Posted April 17, 2021 Brian: Tesco to home then as far as Lidl behind you then a quick turnaround as the "penny dropped" cos it was misfiring a bit. Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. Just phoned Nuffield and went to answerphone. I'll try again after 9 in case they're in. My car is 7 years old but it's only done 30,000 miles so I'd better pay the money with the least risk to Engine & Injectors I suppose. IAM a knmxfgnvhbdbvhjhdfjh!!!!!*&^%$£^%^%$£$%$% Brian 1 Quote
Gazza Posted April 18, 2021 Report Posted April 18, 2021 Jim, I have a small 12v pump if you wish to borrow it but not sure how far the hose will go into the tank, it may need modifications also has your car got a ant-syphon gadget ? I hope you get it sorted 07773905769 Gary Jim 1 Quote
Rob Posted April 18, 2021 Report Posted April 18, 2021 There are companies who specialise in this. I believe a modern diesel can blow seals and have fuel pump issues if running petrol. Hence, stop and have it dealt with, don't drive! Thus, I think there are a number of mobile specialists who come out and sort at your location.Good luck,Rob Jim 1 Quote
