Tarlach. Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 I don't remember there being any junior comps last season. Will they be making a return this year? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

So that the kids actually learn and practise to do things all for themselves on the day. Maybe (depending on number of participant) they fish together on a bigger club boat or two club boats! Mal Thomas Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 Ok so here's some thoughts on Junior Comps for the Summer Holiday period fished from July to end of August. We call it an invitation to Juniors most likely with family connections with an Adult in attendance not necessarily a member but on a members boat. 1. Have a small £5.00 entry to buy a prices or prices. 2. Run it for the whole period with biggest fish wins initially. Develop it if we get good entry levels. Register your fishing and send in the weight and a photo. 3. Have a thread running with fish caught so far for a target. 4. Hopefully with a presentation at the end of it at the club meeting. Please add your thoughts and develop the idea to a workable low maintenance event to make some memories with Grand children, your own kids, nieces and nephews and so on. Without the hassle of one date, weekend or week day and certainly no weather cancellations. 2006holmwood and Jim 2 Quote
Tarlach. Posted February 9, 2023 Author Report Posted February 9, 2023 A king running comp takes the shine off a day event in my opinion. I'd of thought a one day event where all the kids get to meet and mingle would be a better social for them (and us). A long running comp won't capture the interest of a youngster like a one day winner takes all event. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Lets see who will enter, a show of hands here on this thread would give us something to build on. Never say never is my attitude if something builds it can only be a good thing for the club. Quote

The date with the most "I can make it" votes wins? Then organise from there? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk dicky 1 Quote
jerry.shutter Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 Why not combine both ideas, fish as often as the junior is able throughout July, for a most species category, and have a fixed day/date in August, biggest fish, where we try and get them all together for a “fish off” final. Pizza and chips and a prize or two? I would be happy to offer Loobie 1V into the mix to take out 3-4 juniors and minders. Mal Thomas, Tarlach. and Jim 3 Quote
Tarlach. Posted February 9, 2023 Author Report Posted February 9, 2023 That sounds like a sensible idea. Good job Mal and myself gently led you to that conclusion! I suppose the competitions representative should gauge interest? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Jim 1 Quote
Greg Posted February 9, 2023 Report Posted February 9, 2023 Good shout Neil. I have fond memories of being involved with the kids comps and they were great fun. I will be happy to donate a Rod and Real for a prize. Greg Maverick Martin, Tarlach., Jim and 2 others 3 2 Quote
dicky Posted February 10, 2023 Report Posted February 10, 2023 Do you have a junior section? In our club we now have a junior secretary that organises around 4 comps a year on club boats. This is predominantly on their family boats. We charge £5 a child and there is a prize for all at the end. We also arrange charter trips for them, just 4 hours which the club members have subsidised. We're up to around 12 junior members now which considering we have less than 50 senior members isn't bad. jerry.shutter 1 Quote

great white Posted February 12, 2023 Report Posted February 12, 2023 Not sure we should be charging for the junior comp. We do not charge seniors and there are many comps open to them Juniors are the future. Greg and jerry.shutter 2 Quote
jerry.shutter Posted February 12, 2023 Report Posted February 12, 2023 When we chatted about the juniors Charlie we were thinking about being far more relaxed with the them, so they didn’t have to be “family” members. I have two godchildren who have children who I think I might join in, so it was suggested non direct family members just pay a small entry fee to cover a PBSBAC “pack” .This might just entice them to enter again or later in life. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ Quote

Charlie have a look at my post Thursday in this thread, open invitation to non family members 1 x £5.00 fee, fish as many times in the July August period. Our junior members perhaps do not pay? What do you think. Quote
great white Posted February 12, 2023 Report Posted February 12, 2023 Sorry Mal I cannot see that bit about only charging non Members. My thoughts would be to fish for best specimen rather than biggest fish. And maybe have to have some age ranges and allowance for the youngest to have assistance, while older ones do not. Quote

Good feed back Charlie, best percentage sounds good and assistance for those who can't reel their catch in has always been ok with me. We do need some dads, grandads uncles and all other family members to show interest in taking part. great white 1 Quote
Ark Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 Hi all We had very good fishing times with the Juniors comps many years before the thought of charging to enter would be ridiculously you only have to look at the numbers of boats in senior comps that struggle to get interest and that’s free to enter if there are none members that would like to fish then try and talk them in to becoming junior members on a reduced price then they could fish all year round with fuel and bait etc hitting very high prices i think it’s going to be hard, I hope not as I certainly enjoyed fishing with the keen kids good luck with all your thoughts and I hope it works if all goes well I’m happy to put a prize in 🎣 great white, Jim, Greg and 2 others 5 Quote
Greg Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 May I suggest before you start discussing the rules and regs (and who or who not is going to be charged to enter etc) that you see if there is enough club junior participants to make it viable for a comp. Brian used to publish a list of juniors who were part of the family membership group. Once that has been established, then you can evaluate whether the comp is viable with club junior numbers. And as I suspect that there may not be enough take up from club member's juniors, then open it up to non member juniors who are closely associated with the club (i.e club member's friends and relatives juniors) I personally agree not to charge an entry fee at all. If all the numbers stack up then a dedicated club member parent would need to take charge and organise the comp (like what happened in the past) as they have a vested interest for it's success. Speaking from experience, it does take a lot of organising, however if successful, it is very rewarding. PS - Unless I am mistaken, I believe the maximum age a junior could be was up to the age of 16 Years ???? great white, jerry.shutter and Mal Thomas 3 Quote
Brian Posted February 13, 2023 Report Posted February 13, 2023 In 2022-23 there are 18 Junior members. I don’t have dates of birth for 4 of them so numbers could be less in 2023-24. Maverick Martin, great white and Greg 2 1 Quote
jerry.shutter Posted February 15, 2023 Report Posted February 15, 2023 Hi Guys, Thankyou everyone for your thoughts and comments, all of which have been taken on board and discussed with the committee and club members, and really good to hear. Here are our thoughts: We want to encourage as many youngsters as possible, so it was discussed that non family members (anybody) could join in. Obviously with the correct parental/adult supervision. We would have an open fishing calendar in July, when junior members and new “ junior” members could fish as often as they can, and put forward their catches towards the junior July Competition. In August we would hold a one day Competition with perhaps a bbq and prize giving for the July and August Junior Competition. Those Juniors who are not already family members would be asked to pay a Poole Bay Junior Competition Membership of perhaps £2.00. They would receive a card for there Competition membership, perhaps a species identification card, some details of the club, and other fishing information. With this in mind, it would be nice to know which members might be able to offer their boats if we had a good take up for this Competition. Non of this is set in stone so we look forward to any other thoughts. Jerry Brian, Greg, Mal Thomas and 1 other 4 Quote
