Graham Nash Posted July 23 Report Posted July 23 I arranged with my oldest grandson to have a bit of a "bonding trip" today. He's 20 years old, doesn't work, doesn't have any intention of working and doesn't see why he should work! So grandad offered him a day out fishing free of charge! Thursday was chosen as the day (not that it makes any difference to him, but that was the day he chose). I rearranged my diary and ordered the bait. Its been arranged a week or so, with excited texts going back and forward all week. Good (small) tides so should get us out into deeper water. Plan was to get the boat in early, motor down to the quay, he'd jump out and pick up the bait from Mike at Poole Sea Angling and we'd be out of the harbour by about 7.30. 12.40AM this morning I get a text, "don't worry about fishing grandad, I just remembered I'm going to Bournemouth this morning! PAA! So plan completely changed. My normal crew were all at work, and the one who wasn't at work had broken his ankle last weekend! After exhausting all (2 or 3) friends I have, I ended up putting the boat in the water on my own towards the end of the tide, (at Ridge Wharfe slipway that can be a scary exercise) and decided to stay in the harbour for a few hours. I think I must have beaten the club record for seaweed. Every cast resulted in a huge lump of the stuff covering the weight and the hook. A couple of moves just brought me more weed. I had a couple of possible nibbles, but no fish! After my worm supply was exhausted I gave up and had a very slow motor back through the harbour towards Wareham. I had a red and white lure trailing behind me at 3 knots and had 3 small bass take it. I'm not sure of the legality of lure fishing in the harbour at this time of year, but I wasn't intending on keeping anything (to be honest, I wasn't actually expecting to catch anything after the trip I'd had). plaicemat Posted July 23 Report Posted July 23 Back in the day when the welfare system would help you when you were out of work, but only just, his choices would have left him penniless. It's time we got back to that, it's not doing him any favours either mentally or with his self esteem. Nothing like being broke to focus one's ambitions. There are some similar attitudes in my own family and it tests your patience to the limit. I find it hard to understand the attitude, no willingness to work and seemingly wanting to opt out but have the trappings of hard work and effort. If someone has the answer please let me know. Jim Posted July 24 Report Posted July 24 Had the same thing with my daughter. Would not go to work. Decided "borrowing" money and drinking all day was a better option. MY view. . . . . . Stop paying them for doing nothing, Give them a broom, or a wheel barrow, give them some work and if they do it feed them. Teach them work is essential. They just think it's OK cos the Government will pay. Where the hell does the Government get it's money from? Oh yes . . . . people who work. 😒 We really need to stop this lazy culture that's been created by our society. There! Greg Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 Don’t blame the kids.As a parent of a 23 year old who really works hard and wants to succeed, opportunity for him is limited.He graduated from Uni last year. Of all his group, only he has a job.It is our generation to blame. And don’t forget, for a lot of kids Covid which none of us ever grew up with, totally screwed them up!!!We also didn’t have to take out massive loans for our education!!!Our employers didn’t get penalised for employing younger workers as they do now.Apprenticeships, are very limited and rare as hens teeth.We have had 7 Prime ministers in 10 years because most of them disgraced themselves and screwed up the economy.Hardly the example to lead for our kids.Lots of lower paid jobs are being swallowed up by immigrants.It takes up to a year to book a driving test.None of us lot group up through this crapOur kids are becoming totally dissolutioned.So please don’t blame the kids.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Gummage 1 Quote

People who refuse to work and make a career out of playing the system so genuine people in need of help really struggle to get any. The worst offenders being governments hiding the unemployment figures by moving people off the "dole" and onto "sick" because it's easier to do that than "coax" them back to work. Quote

If he didn't want to, that's absolutely fine, but the excitement and texts in the days before, then waiting until 12.40 in the morning (about 6 hours before we were due to go, and obviously too late for me to arrange an alternative) showed a complete lack of responsibility or respect. Maybe I'm just old school? Anyway, my post was really about the sea weed, it made the harbour completely unfishable. The grandson preferring to spend the day in bed is his business. Greg Posted July 26 Report Posted July 26 Point taken Graham.With regards to the seaweed, I have just returned home from Barbados.They are experiencing huge problems with in and around their coast and Seaweed washed ashore on their south coast. Two years ago I was in Antigua and they were experiencing the same problem.The sea temperatures are rising down there which they believe is causing the problem.Could the same reason be responsible for the seaweed problem in the harbour? When we returned 4 days later in the heat, the water in Holes Bay was coloured green and the mudflats were covered in very green weed. What a change in 4 days.
