Fishing from 1600 Friday to 1600 Sunday [All or part of} all fish to be reported to myself or Adam by 1700 on Sunday 15th. ( It is possible that myself and Adam may be out of phone range on Sunday ;-) in which case a text message or PM to myself will be sufficient for recording your catch. I will then collate the results on my return to land.

This is the summer prize competition entry fee

Following on from "my memorable day" tope fishing - see separate report

I was asked to take a couple of extra "guests" out to the rips for a spot of cod fishing.

I was just too knackered from the previous day to try anywhere else for anything big for the 48 hr comp. Struggled to even get the cod in. (note to self - weight training required before next year)

So we all set off and had our fill along with everyone else. Biggest cod of the day about 14lb - not to john or I - we had several 6-8lb as did everyone else.

So really nothing to add to the list above other than an enjoyable day out. Thats two trips out for the cod - have to save a few pennies and have a few trips a bit closer to home.

Thanks for posting the results Paul.

The comp was the 3rd of 4 in the BFM league - I have just sent the results.

We had a total of 18 anglers book in and fish the comp, but just 7 anglers featuring in the results, the rest didnt log any fish.

I also heard of and saw numerous other anglers out fishing in the good weather over the weekend - probably enough to have doubled the entry. A reasonable turnout, but it still seems some are happy to to comp fish.

Anyway - one more BFM comp to go!

Thanks for all who entered and fished and well done to those who got on the score board - 4 fish over 100% not bad at all!

Thanks all that helped organise the Comp

It seems a shame that more Members were not able to take part

I struggle to work out why not, with a full 48 hrs to chose to fish anywhere in Club waters for any species.

Yes we had good eels offshore but only just beat others catching mullet and rays inshore.

Perhaps others have been lucky enough to do more fishing than us recently and just did not fancy it.

If you have time to post, I for one would like to know why this once popular comp has lost some appeal.

At the risk of being controversial, I didn't take part because I didn't believe I had any chance.

With almost no reports of quality inshore fish, and almost the entire focus of the club these days being on the offshore Alderney/Wrecks/Rips brigaid, what chance does a slow inshore boat have?

We went out Sunday, and had a disastrous trip - 3 dogfish, 3 mackerel, and about 5 bream under half a pound - between 3 of us!

I'm finding it hard work this year, and the lack of catch reports for inshore marks suggests I am not alone!

How can you say that Mike?? 3rd Place went to a fish caught less than 2 miles from land, 4th place was to a fish that could have been caught on a mooring - christ, youre big bass last year was caught close in!! Buning lots of diesel doesent always been big fish - this last week for me confirmed this - more cod than ive ever caught, but not one over 10lb - not even 50%!!

Every year is the same..... inshore fishing always holds its own. As for the focus being on Alderney.... half dozen boats out of 100 making the trip once or twice a year is hardly the main focus.

Sorry, but your comments just aint right!!

probably right there mike, because if you believe u have no chance, you most probably wont as i doubt you will be fishing any where near 100% thinking like that. A bit of preperation and focuss and theres plenty of inshore species that can be targeted.

You have far more chance of a 100% inshore species than a 100% rips cod at the moment.

Be confident in your ability mate as you have a pretty good track record of catching decent fish and im sure you would have done well.

BTW....

I finished 3rd and 4th.....didnt know that was possible laugh.giflaugh.gif

Mike,

To add to that .........

my original plan was to fish the Ledge for bass. The run \ quality of fish there this year has been excellent........ with plenty of well over 100 % fish being caught {see Kam's post last week}

With the good weather a 100 % + garfish was also on the cards in that area; and big bream are still about!

Alun.

.......species comp. Sun. week could be interesting!!! [this time of year.]

I fished the comp and fished the ledge. If I had not dropped the big eel I had hooked into, I am sure it would have got somewhere up there. ( Don't the ones that get away always seem bigger !! )

I won the competition 2 years ago fishing inshore ( 4lb 7oz Bream ) and beat 2 boats who went all the way to Alderney to fish the comp along with Charlie on his wrecks wink.gif - certainly do'able and the winning fish was an exceptionally good one as well.

Big bream was what I would have gone for if I hadn't been tempted offshore away from the comp biggrin.gif

No way !

If conger and Bull Huss were banned then I would have only Bream to go for inshore ( although I like the Mullet idea )

Mind you I have yet to catch a decent Bull Huss but they are there as my companion a couple of trips back caught one which would have been well up the ranks for the comp.

I say ban anything that Alfresco has a chance of catching ( unless I am fishing on her of course laugh.giflaugh.gif )

We were out in Small Fry.

My son Steve, my mate Chris from Coventry and Myself.

We didn't have much of a clue between us so we didn't bother to enter the Comp.

We caught some Mackerel of Hengistbury and some Pout on the patch.

Not good enough to win a comp.

We did have a good day out though and that's what it's all about. If I catch a fish, It's just Icing on the Cake.

Big thanks to Mike Fox for swinging by and saying hello while we were drifting past Brownsea Castle and giving us a bit of advice. We still didn't catch anything decent.

We did have Fish for Tea though.

I do feel proud to put food on the table that way.

Jim

PS I'll do more comps as my capabilities improve.

I was only asking the question out of interest

but after 15 years running a boat that cruised at 10-12 knots and we limited to ranges up to about an hours steaming, I would never rule out the inshore fishing in a specimen comp.

I borrowed a boat last year and we never went more than 2.5 miles offshore and Dan was runner up I came 3rd with a bream caught at Dancing ledge.

The differance between bigger and smaller boats range is cancelled out by the fact that small boats can be trailed to more productive areas such as the solent and weymouth both for the fishing and to avoid strong winds.

Mike I believe you spend as much time in and around the channel islands as anyone, I know Alfresco may get their faster, but you certainly get their cheaper. wink.gif

If all the reports from Alfresco etc seem endless it is because we are so pleased to be back fishing after nearly two years ashore building her.

I read that Dan was not the only Member to catch a large eel on Sunday, it appears as if the other Member had not entered the comp, I wonder if Jonathon is regretting that decision.

You have to trust your ability, and must to be in it to win it.

PJ not sure why we should select certain species to omit [sure it was tongue in cheek] but if we did why pick on huss, from my 5 years as fish recorder we do not get many recorded and on sunday the best went 75%.

As for banning Alfresco, Paul Get your hat mate

1 last point, I posted that I intended to go and needed crew, the only ones that replied got a trip and I believe they enjoyed it. biggrin.gif

with the wind kicking up on saturday day/night, my plan were ruined as the sea was to big to take my boat out and thats where a vessel like alfresco gives you an edge, but theres still enough water to find some shelter and easily enough species to still compete as charlie says, with a small boat, u tow her to a different slip. so he right about a small boat versitility cancelling out a large boats range.

Keep conger and huss, but i would say that 40lb as 100% for an eel is a fairly easy target is you are specifically target them, so i would like back the idea of 100% being something like 50lb and i would espect a decent boat, anchored on a decent wreck with plenty of eels on it would get a 100% 40lb specimen fish fairly easily.

I would say the same for one of my favourite species the thick lipped greay mullet(i targeted them in the comp as i thought its a banker for a 100% fish, in tha same way that the alfresco lads banked on a conger or two of 100%+), . a mullet of 4.4lb is a pretty easy target and 100% should be moved to 5lb. If you can target them, the ratio of a 4lb fish is about 3-1 anyway, so thats another that may need looking at. Well, thinking about it, considering that most mullet fishing is actually sight fishing, i pick out the larger ones anyway, and its probably about 1 in 4 fish that i get is under that weight!

But if the format stays the same, just be shrewed about your targets, and do your your homework before hand as it was not by luck that my little boat had two 100% fish.

Anyway, congratulations to Dan again, sticking to his target and getting the reward. Good to see a nipper win it!

Tounge in cheek- i knew you'd bite biggrin.gif

However i agree with Dan that the %'s are too low for both but don't propose we change it as it's based on the NFSA list

I must agree with both of you that some 100% fish are easier than others in theory

Conger and tope are to be honest a good example

I love fishing for both, I have caught loads of 100% conger and only ever 1 tope of 100%

we just like Dan did some homework worked out where our chances were good, made a plan around tide times, got up early and then fished hard.

We fish to NFSA guidlines so are stuck with their specimen sizes for our area, I do not necessarily believe that 100% specimens are that "Easy" to get

We fished hard on a variety of marks for two days with 4 anglers each day and only had one each day.

Tight lines all
