BREACHING SNAPPER LIMIT

When fining auckland man paul roger's $3000 for grossly breaching his snapper limit . manukau district court's judge hubble saids this type of offending was prevalent in the fishing community and it was important that the message got through.

Roger's who was caught with Large numbers of snapper hidden under the floorboards of his boat, has been fined $3000, ordered to pay $130 court costs, and had his boat, out-board motor, trailer and fishing gear forfeited to the crown .

Paul roger's a 51-year-old yard man from mangere, auckland appeared in the manukau district court on august 13, after being caught by fishery officersat the kawakawa bay boat ramp in february .

Rogers two other adults had been fishing in rogers 4.4m aluminium fishing boat .

they were leaving the fishing ramp when fishery officers stopped their vehicle and asked the inspect their catch.

Rogers showed the officers 36 legal-sized snapper in two chilly bins.

As fishers in auckland area are allowed to catch nine snapper each per day, the 36 snapper represented the legal maximum catch for the four people on board.

Fishery officers then inspected the rest of the vessel , finding a flap that had been cut in the floorboards under the petrol tank.

Under this flap ,officers saw a number of snapper packed into the boat's bilges.

Upon removing the entire floor, they found a further 85 snapper.

Rogers admitted hiding the illegally taken fish to try and avoid being caught by fishery offcers who regularly patrol the kawakawa bay ramp .

As the skipper of the boat, rodgers was deemed to be in possession of,and responsible for, all 121 snapper found on board .

Once the three legal limits of nine snapper each for the other two adults and the child were taken into account ,rogers was left in possession of 94 snapper , over 10 times his daily legal limit.

This was the third time rogers had been caught with excess snapper .

In september 2000 he was convicted of possessing 244 snapper and ordered to pay a fine of $1200 and court costs of $130 .

His vessel was forfeited to the crown on that occasion, too.

Then in November last year he was caught with 16 snapper (severn more than his limit ) and given a $250 Infringement Notice .

It is very disappointing to see a man who has been caught twice previously - and already lost one boat -being caught again with large numbers of excess snapper".

At least the Kiwis are trying there best, taking the boat and the gear and issuing fines.

 

even though replacing a small tin boat is cheap enough.

 

Wish we had the bottle to do it, a recent case saw a 14m trawler illegaly fishing for bream inside the 3 mile limit fined 17k even though he admitted making about 10 times as much from a seasons illegal bream fishing.

 

Now if they had taken his boat and gear instead of a 10% fine he would not be out there netting again next season.
