    A Proud day for Jim

A proud day for Jim. Nothing to do with boats! In 2023 I decided to carve Upton House into wood. I asked if I could fly my drone. Not a chance was the answer, Nesting birds & wildlife etc. So I tried many times to capture enough data with my phone to use Photogrammetry to create a digital model. Every attempt failed. In 2024 I asked again and showed my lack of progress and what I was trying to achieve. I explained that if it worked I would donate a carving to the park. I was given a very small time slot to fly. I captured 730 high res photos and stitched them together using Photogrammetry. I then had to clean up the model and remove all of the “fluff”. I used that to create a digital relief and then carved that into a lovely piece of wood that the park had given to me. It is now on display in the visitor centre. This is a video of: The Making of this carving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IjULWr-GxI

    Thursday cobwebs

Took a couple of friends out for a days fishing today. Phil is a keen freshwater angler but has done a little bit of sea fishing before. Darren is not an angler but was keen to give it a try. Lazy start out through the 9:30 bridge lift from Holes Bay out into a fresh breezy bay. The tides were large today so decided to stay inshore. Our first stop was at Poole patch. Lots of small bream and mini conger up to 8lb. SIFCA fisheries boat came alongside for a chat helmed by an ex club member Dave Mayne. After a quick chat they went off to their next victim 😄 The guests were looking a little green but adamant they wanted to stay out. A move was called for so down to Southbourne Rough for more of the same ie bream and slimeys. by now Darren was looking not to good so I decided a return to the harbour was called for where we had more mini bream plus loads of weed. Gave up and came back in thought the 15:30 lift. Whilst the old Poole bridge was midway through lifting some idiot thought it would be a good idea to jump the barrier and make his way up the Poole side leaf with a view to jumping to the other leaf. The bridge operator was not a happy bunny giving the offender short shrift though the tanoy. The guy bottled out of jumping and made his way back to civilisation. Well that made the day more interesting lol. Back on the berth the boat was given a quick wash down then into the bar for a beer. Both guests said they enjoyed the day and were up for another go at a later date

  10. Thanks guys. To be honest i cant recall joining first time round! Must be an age thing. Hoping to get my little 10ft dory ready to go out when its flat calm but until then i have been out a few times on charter boats. The latest trip, last week, was with Dan on Blue Strike out from Mudeford. A great boat with a fab hard working skipper. Target was Turbot which we achieved. Also had bass, scad, tope and some mackerel for the freezer for pike bait and the smoker. Was bitten off a few times, tope? so if anyone catches something with 7/0 circle hooks in its mouth let me know what it was. Changed up to 50lb hook length but couldnt get a bite. My son loves fishing and its one of the few occasions i can enjoy fishing with him as he has 2 support workers with him so i can just have the fun bits of watching him reel the fish in. He is very funny! !
