    Opinions??

Andy is always worried about the fuel consumption on Pal-o mine [arvor 25] He doesn't seem to be able to get it to use enough !!.we trudge it round to the fuel pump and when the price comes up ,he mutters and mumbles about "it can't be full !". For our last three trips {full days out } we have not had a fuel guage [sender packed up] we carried spare cans in case ! but last week we went out, having had the sender replaced, and it showed over 1/2 full. and after that day out,you could barely see any movement in the level. He always keeps at 2.5 revs and we seldom exceed 17knots. So he must be doing something right.!! ..jack
  5. Situation "Euro-normal" then. as discussed on site previously... ..jack
  6. What an educational picture Alan, I knew of course that people down in Australia and China were upside down to us,but it never occured to my that those in Canada would be half-way there. Logical I suppose really.. ..jack
  7. What a good run we have had on this subject !...can I make one other suggestion,I feel a second anchor is a must....BUT. [from experience, this ] Stow it so that it does not rest against any GRP surface on your boat. You won't use it much,it will almost certainly be buried out of sight so it won't get checked. There is nothing half so good in a fast, slamming speed machine, for wearing a hole in time. { I know !! ] ..jack
  8. Got myself a couple of packs of 6" sandeel as title. to use from the zodiac in North Wales. I usually use live [if I can get them} or frozen if I cant. I fish them on a long trace ,10' or more with just a pea size ball lead on the mainline. I lip hook the eel,in each case. Is this the way to use the jelly style eel ? or is there a different aproach required. I use a 1/0 fine wire hook usually, but thought I might try the 1/0 circle hooks...always willing to learn, never too proud to ask...jack
  9. Thanks Fellas, That gives me plenty to go on before resorting to the bin. as I said the reel looks perfect inside,no wear or corrosion despite living in total neglect on the boat. But I do seem to remember giving it a thorough blast throughout with WD40 on the last but one trip, perhaps it reached parts that it should'nt have.I will have another crack at it... jack
  10. Slightly different thread, but same theme,Excess weight in the campervan. I decided,[ after a struggle to climb dinas Mawdi [mountain pass in wales],admittedly towing a car with a boat and engine and allied gear ,in it ] To have a good rock bottom clearout, For her part my wife removed 9 [yes 9 ] carrier bags of tinned food!!.This was her "stand-by" supply!.God knows how many pots;pans;woks.etc. 16 bottles of wine, secreted in various hidey-holes, [at most we only get through 2 bottles per week.enough spare sweaters;trousers and other "just in case" outfits to supply a third world country, over 20 p/back and hardback books. For my part I could only lose ;2 boxes and 3 canvas rolls of tools { the most I have ever used in the last 5 years = 1 pr pliers ,1 screwdriver, that includes use on the boat too ] 4 spare hammers including a 5lb lump hammer; 2 forks;1 spade [i am banned from bait digging these days.] 1 pr chest and 1 thigh waders. 1 spare BBQ. ....anyway you get the drift,so it pays to have a bit of a turn out, especially if you haven't done so in a year at least.....jack
  11. So sorry Duncan, I did see your wave and waved back from in the cabin. If it's any consolation as we rounded the corner and saw you head into Dolphin Haven, Andy remarked to me, "thats a nice boat that, and the chap who owns it is a nice bloke too.!!".so it wasn't all bad. Must have a chat about the localised marks around Durleston some time,if you'r willing,as we just seem to run about like chickens with thier heads chopped off....jack
  12. Thanks Duncan..it's a CN 30 L...jack. never mind aihh.
  13. Andy and I set out from Cobbs on Sunday with high hopes for a good day .Strong tides, good weather, fair forecast. We would have liked to have motored down to Portland to link up with "the Golden Boys" but felt it would not make good sense realistically. Any way we decided to head out west like the cowboys of old.A first stop at Peverill drifting with shad and redgill, was pretty useless as the wind and tide seemed about equal, but in opposite directions, resulting in a see-saw kind of drifting. we tried trolling next but nil result . Offshore next, At the 4 mile out ,stage ,heading for a well known wreck,we came to the conclusion, after beating against short steep waves at a reducd speed, that we would have difficulty standing up,let alone fishing when we arrived. So with descretion the better part of valour we headed back in to Anvil Point area,There was little tide here but the sea was still rough enough for " one hand for the rail" fishing,All under a tropical sun !.We then moved down to St,Aldhems ledge where the tide was screaming through. We used lip hooked joey's here.one of us hard on the bottom on heavy gear, the other higher in the water on lighter gear. end result after a couple of hours 1 dogfish.we then moved in under the mile posts, tied to a bouy,[cheaper than loseing anchors] in a screaming tide and bottom fished with fresh baits, and whole joey's for another hour . no bites at all. Moved then to a Ray mark closer to base, and spent the next hour removing unbelievable amounts of loose lettuce;string; and other various weed from our end tackle. At this point the boat began to swing about in a week almost non-existant tide.so we quit !.On our return run toward Poole,we encountered again, beginning at Old harry a very strong ebbing tide which continued all the way to the mooring. What a strange day out ! Even Wallace and Grommit would have been surprised. As Andy said to me crossing the harbour on the way in," Strange day,no fish, but beats the hell out of working on a house roof!!!".......jack
  14. I have been useing the Okuma Convector reel for about 5 trips, but it was never really tested {thats my kind of fishing } On our recent trip when we actually caught fish,I found that I could not fully tighten the clutch and had to resort to major thumb pressure to recover line.At home I dismantled the reel [keeping a step by step diagram of my working , I could'nt find my original paperwork ] Everything looked in perfect order, although the arrangement of metal discs only,in the clutch seemed strange.I re-assembled only to find that I could not "snug down ". the final side plate. there seemed to be too many components. I re- assembled several times with the same result. The question is... Should I [a] Throw away some of the components ..or Throw away the reel and stick with my old, perfectly working, white end plate. Mitchell Reel .despite its heavier weight on the rod ?.or as a last resort, does anyone have an assembly diagram for this reel ?....jack

    Revelations.1

A group of fishermen haveing driven down to the coast, found the weather to be just too much to go out. They decided to give it a couple of hours and adjourned to the nearest pub. The day wore on and in the late afternoon it improved. By this time they were all the worse for the drink, and decided to give it best. As they left the pub they saw something occuring on the beach,so they went to investigate,..It was the local evangelist church carrying out Baptisms in the sea. One of them, being well sozzled waded in and up to the minister, who said to him " Mister are you ready to find Jesus ?". He replies, " yes Rev. I sure am,". The minister then dunks the chaps head under water ,pulls him up and says to him,"Have you found Jesus Brother?". The drunk says "no". The minister dunks him again, longer this time... pulls him up and asks again, "did you find Jesus?". The drunk once again says,"no.". The minister has had enough now so he dunks him under for about 30 seconds , and pulls him up gasping and choking, " Now my good man," he says, "Have you at last found Jesus?".... "no", says the drunk." ..Are you sure this is where he fell in ?"............................sorry..jack

    Live Eels

Sorry Martin.I did.nt realise that your Alec and sam's Alex where the same chap.I will use the phone when required, Questions; Will he supply, say,a couple of dozen, and will he supply on a Sunday or will I need to collect in advance and keep them alive until reqd.....Looks like major bait tank production lined up !...PS. Andy says that the battery situaton is,as you surmised, and although he draws the line at keeping the deck wash running continually whilst drifting or at anchor,he is prepared to let me blast frequently, useing the method you suggest...cheers again..jack

    Live Eels

Same songsheet similar song.Andy and I have tried to get live sandeel in Poole without success. We were told we could get them on the quay, but they always say, either they havent any [although you can see them in the tank[,or they are for the charter boats. we would try to catch or net our own if we knew where to get them. If cautious reply required,a PM would do nicely.....jack

    Live Baiting Joeys

I had considered putting the hook through my nostrils, but I reckon it would interfere with my "sarnie noshing".Still if it will help to get me a Bass, I will give it a go !!..jack
  24. An interesting and hopefully controversial point.. Talking to a chap in the tackle shop in West Bay, He said " the best way to fish live joeys is with a single hook [circle should be good ] through the wrist part of the tail, thus allowing the bait unrestricted swimming movement, and the predator to take it head first.". I have tried it and the bait remains very active and lasts as long as it takes to get eaten...jack
  25. Thanks Martin. I had seen this item and indeed that was what I based my assumption about Bassing on. But what is the use of patrols " having a chat" with those commercials etc. who are doing it ? as they obviously just carry on when they've gone away, if this is the extent of thier activities everyone may as well just get on with it ! Has anyone EVER been prosecuted or dealt with in Poole under this legislation ?...When on holiday in north wales a few years back ,I was stopped and my boat examined whilst fishing in the Mawdoch estuary. And warned in no uncertain terms what would become of me and my boat and fishing gear ,if found to be targetting Bass, never mind being in possession of one !...If there is'nt conservation in our own back yard, what hope on an international scale ?............. OOOh..dont I go on !!!. ..jack
