Chamonix has an Olympic sized swimming pool in its Sports Centre. For swimming in lakes, there are two groups of lakes, both 20 minutes from Chamonix, which offer a variety of outdoor sports as well as great barbecue sites at night - completely hassle-free. There are rules on what you can do and where at each lake, but just do as the locals do. Lakes or areas of lakes are designated for Windsurfing, Fishing or Swimming. Kayaking (for unknown reasons) is banned at these lakes. Car parking is heavily police-patrolled so theft is not a problem. Quoted from a Chamonix website Try here

There is a river running down through the valley and several ponds and lakes within striking distance including of coarse Lake Geneva. I've not sussed the fishing out yet as my only visit so far was to a family wedding at Maison-Jaune. The crack would be to drop into Geneva airport, hop on a 'mountain drop off' minibus - pre-arranged and your there in about an hour.

I have a holiday for (up to) 4 people available in one of the best chalet hotels in the Chamonix region. The dates are flexible in September to October. Whether you just want to take in the stunning scenery or get involved in any of the sport persuits is up to you. This is a very colourful time of year. Good choice Dan, you'll not go far wrong with Shimano. Ask about their use in saltwater as some are better than others.

The driver, is efficiency first, them MAX speed, so we're re-pitching by 1.25" for first assessment of performance. with another 3/4 on calc left in hand from book figures. Just wondered why a fixed spool for trolling and hauling 1lb leads? It might just be me but I'd choose a multiplier for both of those. High retrieval rates can be had with multipliers too but the ones I know of are over twice your suggested budget. You could do a lot worse than saving a bit more and going for a high speed Daiwa saltist 6.1 or 6.4 : 1 the later scorching in 47 inches per crank with a full spool. If you were determined to have a fixed spool the you might take a look at the Penn Slammer. I have a couple of the LiveLiner version (that's a bait runner to the carp heads) for livebaiting for bass. Robust enough for light blue water game, tarpon that sorta stuff. Don't have a price but would be cheaper than the saltist. Here's my Slammer LiveLiners

A good tip to prevent the carbs gumming up is to run the engine while flushing at the end of each outing, but swicth off the fuel until the engine empties the carbs and stops by itself. Each winter I would flush out the carbs with isopropyl alcohol to remove any gum (varnish) as part of the service and winterising process. I presume 'your man' at Cobbs will open the carbs to get at the needles and jets to do the very same. Trev
