Thanks again Neal for a great session - as expected Cabin Boy is not best pleased we're racking up your species.
You worked wonders extracting the hook in my finger. Despite it being past the barb your fishing line method was spot on.
Thanks Dave - the 50 Johnson I can do on muffs - it's the 4hp that is the issue. Will need gallons of the stuff. I'll give it some thought and look at the thermostat issue - possibly warm the engine up switch off and then flush through the telltale?
Thanks for the link Rob - very helpful.
Whats a pee hole - is it the tell-tale?
In my Johnson manual the pictures look like the flushing adaptor is screwed into the tell-tale socket. Can this be right, to flush into the tell-tale?
An earlier than normal start for us saw us drifting the training bank at 8.15 where a long drift eventually produced a reasonable tub - 1lb 10 oz - that had taken a liking to the plaice rig.
A move to near Ballard saw us into bream after re-positioning at Brian's insistence. (he kept reminding me!!!) A couple of dozen came aboard with most going back
A further move seeking rays was made and straight away the big baits were being wiped out by bream.
A solitary mackerel was immediately pressed into use and before too long a surprised small turbot came aboard - a first for us on Sea Dream.
Back down with fresh mackerel and after a while a healthy bend in the 12/20 indicated a better fish and a little smalleyed ray eventually posed for pictures.
It wasn't much later that we motored past Derek on Sea Sparkle and headed back to Cobbs.
Another great day afloat.
Nice report Ian.
Your passage out reminds me of ours on True Blue last year - Steve didn't even contemplate stopping in mid channel!
Hope we do better with him in June.
Cabin Boy and I decided on a late start in view of the anticipated drop in wind speed this afternoon - WRONG.
left Cobbs at 12 and poked our nose out of the harbour to find a bigger than anticipated swell - a swift u-turn at the end of the training bank saw us back in the harbour and motoring towards this very smart looking white thingy - Wishin Too.
Had an unproductive hour or so on a buoy near the castle. Dream Drifter motored past heading for the patch. We had aA similar spell in the North channel before we tried once again to test the conditions outside.
The smart white thingy passed us without too much of a problem but conditions were no better for us than earlier - so another u-turn and back inside again.
Tried a couple of buoys before finding one that gave us a fish - in fact half a dozen small sand smelts (I'll post a pic later ). Then the light rod hooped over as a small bass made an unsuccessful bid for freedom - duly returned.
Further moves were unproductive but more lessons learned about conditions - tide and where to winkle out a few.
Great to be out too.
The numbering may have become confused? Allan Green and Bill have disappeared.
1) Neal Sturt
2)Chris Witheford on Kingfisher
3)Nigel Allen and Mike Toms on Wishin Too
4)? Stuart and Cabin Boy on Sea Dream
Took non member Ken (Derek's mate) out for an airing and decided to try around OH towards Ballard looking for bream. First drop Ken had a sizeable pollock which we followed up with a number of dogs and later on a gar - but no bream.
Sport wasn't hectic and we moved to the patch where again dogs were around and a couple of small starry smoothhounds. (is the jury still out whether starry and common smoothhounds are the same species?) Again no bream.
A few drifts off Branksome only produced a goby so it was back to Cobbs at 5.30.
Great to be afloat again.
