  13. It is a common misconception that fish farms have a beneficial effect on fish stocks. I n fact they fall into two separate cases. Those that use fish meal as feed and those that use vegetable based feeds. The former have a serious effect on ecosystems as they rely on indiscriminate catches of small fish such as sand eels to make the feed which results in the destruction of food sources for takeable fish and large catches of undersized fish that will not reach maturity. This is a huge problem in the east where prawn farming consumes vast quantities of fish meal and is impacting dreadfully on fish stocks in the surrounding oceans. I guess unfortunately the majority of farms currently use fish meal so perhaps we all need to,seek out and champion those that do not. Peter

  22. It is hard , I was at an awards dinner with one of our developers recently bemoaning the fact that local protests can prevent much needed housing and the jobs they create until the barrage came up and I switched into nimby mode on behalf of the salmon. Looking at the barrage the destruction of a complete ecosystem seems a high price to pay. How does that compare with cracking and the reserves we probably have for 30 years? This could become an issue down here with the geology around kimmeridg! Perhaps we should all take to kayaks before it's too late!! peter
  23. We nearly lost one on Saturday at kimmeridge after much manoeuvring managed to lift but it would not hang up on the ring and kept sliding back as soon as power off. Eventually after getting the warp as short as possible a prolonged pull along the surface got the anchor to plane up and lock in the ring. Could. See something pretty large attached turned out to be a massive pot anchor with about 3ft of scaffold tube and large rebars plus a really heavy growth of sea life.Took both of us to lift in the boat. Amazed the bouy managed to lift it. we seem to attract these things having had a pot full of concrete, something worryingly like a torpedo that got released very quickly , a submerged cable and about 200mts of pot line just before Christmas. Just goes to show you can get most things sorted with a bit of patience Peter
