tommy illusion smith get's near record flounder in holes bay.I feel the record will go shortly with the run of large fish turning up after the cold weather on the flats. His patients payed off after sitting with his baited line out for two day's , the fish took the bait with a gentle pull, but when the boat was doing 15 knts with the anchor down, he knew he might have a good fish on . After fighting the fish for 5 hrs it was landed at cobbs by the crane ,shame just 4oz short of the club record. well now iv'e dragged you all in here HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well we'd done the planing for two day,s , it was time to put up or shut up.I arrive at the boat yard 5-00am minus '7' that's fresh to say the least. were there early, not because were keen or parts of are brain have been stolen in the night but its the only time the bridge opens before 9-30. Stan arrives, we load the tackle on the boat which by the way looks like a bloody 6 ton ice cube , all we need are penguins ice skating on the deck, but stan say's thats ok his platinum card will do the trick on the sheets of ice that used to be windows, but i had to join in the fun with my trusty MAKRO card as the platinum couldn't handle it on it's own.We steam down through the bridge at 5-45 and tie up on the quay to tackle up ready for a 7-30 departure. Book in 7-30 and leg it for a mark off the island .The sea is as flat as fred dibnah's hat and the weather has warmed cosiderably. Were fishing by 8-30, launching our fancy bait's, hair rigged squid with crab and mussle boily essence on 6/0 circle hooks, and pennel riggs with j hooks loaded with half a box of squid ! what can resist these festive treats, well as it turned out every bloody cod on the south coast. The congers , pout and dogs thought they were delicious .We had a great day only to find out that a boat 100 yards away came first and another boat 250 yds away had had another cod, so how close were we,perhaps the smell of are baits pushed the fish their way so will we get a share . So you all have a good new year and lets brake some of those club records. and as for the cod (nill desperandum) ill let you work that one out, tight lines fred ps the cod looks a bit surprised what is alex doing ?????

did you say crap angler or carp! as none of it worked good enough to entice a cod onto the end of one of these lovely tasty baits ,which by the way stank like hell , but we did catch an aray of other fish to these strange freshwater taticts conger dogs and pout Fred

Well we've geard the boat up ready, speaciality baits , crab essence boily's and other wierd hair rigged set up's but will we find the cod. The weather looks cold with a fresh southerly comming in the afternoon. Will be heading out to get slack water 14 miles off to fish for 11/2 hours and leg it to the isle of wight, get inshore out of the tide and hope for the best, hope the next report is a winning one ,so good luck one and all after us that is no tommy this trip fancy's his luck on illusion! it was the size of circle hooks 8/0 fish up to 160lb so what was he fishing for nuclear subs with 16/0, "fight the beast give it line"
-
i use circle hooks fly fishing on buzzers, and have found that they give 50-50 hook up rate same as useing normal hooks. When live baiting for striped marlin these hooks are fantastic we used them in one catch and release tounament, and won 10,000 dollars and came second with a 100%hook up rate. With sail fish forget it they are just useless and we dont know why. In desperation we hair rigged the circle it certainly got the takes but still could not hook the sails but dorado and other speices it worked fantastic so it might be worth a go over here. what we did was sew the bait through the eyes and then to the circle with about an 2.5cm between hook and bait. How you sew a ragworm through the eyes ill leave up to your imagination? Fred

Lets hope for good weather and a touch of luck and who knows ,i think this may involve covering a few miles for a decent swipe at this one so lets hope fuel prices go down and the price of chips go up " i think not , so be lucky

tommy was keen to go again following are success the day before. We leave cobbs and the fog is as thick rodney! in only fools and horses , but we carry on, in the stern of the boat i hear a bump then oh "bugger!",on looking round tommy's got a bin linner on his head ,and on asking what's it all about he retturns with a shake of the head "JUST SEEING IF THE VISABILITY IS BETTER IN THE BAG" thank god for all the electronic gadgits sextant and hand held compass. We get halfway down the channel and think we have found the monster of the deep lurking behind the curtain of fog , spewing up bubbles, sand and whirlpools turns out to be a 1000 ton bloody dredger. Out into the open sea and still pea soop so 25 knots and on with the proximity alarm on the radar and 45 mins later we arrive ,down goes the hook and the bloody fog lifts, typical. As for the fishing , plenty of action with congers pout and dogs, but no cod we could put our name to.The coffee has run out by now and were down to are last bacon butty, so we make the deccision to make for the 4.30 bridge . We reach cobbs and tie the boat up, wish each other merry xmas and head for home till the next episode Fred

no tommy who has dellusions????

Tommy turns up early he must be keen, he hasn't touched a cod yet this season so were going on a long trip. After 1hr an 15 mins of 25 knts with the tide we reach are mark off ventnor. Two hours of flood tide left i loose three decent fish to rubbish knots and one bite off and tommy drags in a conger 30+.Tide cuts we make the decision to go back to a mark off freshwater 15miles but its on the way home.Stick the hook straight in and have coffee and bacon butty.Tide starts to trickle, so out go the rods, tide starts to tramp so more weight on goes 1lb 1/2, 10mins later the rod whacks over, so i give it some line then its time to see whats on the end, i strike one way but the fish wants to go the other, 15 mins later we see the fish , tommy say's it wont fit in the net i calmly tell him make it !!!!!!! fit, then its over the gunnel she comes , so after a bit of back slapping we stick it on the scales and it goes 25lb 14oz digital! christmas has come early
