  3. I was out all 4 days, and was made to feel like an absolute nautical genius by some of the complete f***wits out there! Thursday was OK- most people who were out seemed to know the basics, although the RNLI had an above-normal number of breakdowns to deal with. I was amazed at how many ran out of fuel. The RNLI and Coastguard should charge to deal with this kind of thing. I did have a hairy moment on Friday when my anchor tripped in the vicinity of a 50 foot gin palace, but at least I was able to sort it out with no damage to anyone. We were anchored up near to Charlie and Ben on Saturday when a big WAFI decided to anchor literally on top of us. When he finally left the Dorset Princess (Champion Pancake Flinger) decided to come in amongst us and forced a couple of little boats out of the way) On Sunday we cruised past Court Jester and dropped the pick near to Serenity. At slack water the different sizes and types of boats were all swinging around at different rates and in different directions- most hadn't considered this when they dropped anchor and seemed oblivious that they were close to colliding with other boats. Boats of all sizes motoring between us at anchor way too fast, causing a lot of wake, and with complete disregard to anchor ropes and fishing lines. (There may be a rush on oil seals this week! ) Liberty Lass and the other boats 'servicing' the warships were very irresponsible in this regard as were the Marines themselves following the Beach Assault demos (I did hear Skua being told to slow down on channel 16 by one of the warships.) So many little boats didn't have a proper anchor, and many more didn't seem to understand that the boat doesn't end up where the anchor is dropped. I saw several people literally dropping their anchor, and chain and rope all in a heap out of a bucket... Motoring there and back we saw many boats overloaded with people who were either too cool to drown, or have the ability to breathe underwater. All in all, it was an education! I think Powerboat 2, VHF licence and insurance should be brought in (and the RNLI should charge for rescues where the reason is 'dumbass'), but when the Police can't enforce licence/MOT/insurance on the roads, there is little chance of this being enforced on the water. Great to be out there though, brilliant weather, awesome air displays and some nice fishing for my crew each day. Also brilliant to see other PBSBACers out there, and to hear us looking out for each other. Well done to PBSBAC Rescue Services- you know who you are!
  4. Happy Birthday!

  6. No problem Lofty, I don't do the scientific research, or write the articles, I just pull it together! It's all out there for people to see, just it's not always all that easy to find- happy for you to pass on so that others can see it.
  7. The report is a bit of a monster this month! I’m not sure if there are an increasing number of organisations taking an interest in what happens in the seas and oceans, or whether it’s just that the internet makes it easier to find out about them. Either way, there’s a lot to read! Many of the stories and information that I pass on comes from various ‘channels’ on the internet. Sam was very pleased to catch lots of mackerel, a mini Ballan wrasse, a nice little spotted ray of 2lb 3oz and a Tope of about 10lb- contributing to Team Wishin's total. Thanks Nigel and Mal (not a couple... ) for having us along!
  10. Thanks chaps I know a lot of these topics may seem like they are a long way away from Poole Bay, but most of our seas are all linked and eventually the ripples (haha) from these things will reach us. Unfortunately. Mal- I think the big things this year will include (in no particular order) -Marine litter & microplastics -MPA's/MCZ's -Sharks -Collapse of Bass stocks May be able to get a few of the videos in my reports shown at a meeting... Nigel A- I think this is something that the SIFCA are currently working on tackling (haha again). I'll confirm and report back. Nigel H- Will do

  13. It’s getting to be quite difficult to write these reports, as the internet makes it easy to be aware of more and more organisations which are trying to save our seas and the life within. I’ll continue to do my best to pick out anything relevant for the monthly summary, but I might miss something! So perhaps have a look at who I follow on Twitter (most are marine conservation related!) by looking me up at @charlieannear Some of this month’s hot topics: Shark Finning. EU has closed loopholes, Brunei brought in a ban, a number of airlines have banned transportation, Hacked Off campaign by celebrity chefs including Gordon Ramsay and HFW, Selfridges (shark liver oil called ‘squalene’ is used in cosmetics) and ZSL (Zoological Society of London- London Zoo) campaign for shark protection. Marine litter- Chinese lanterns. More publicity due to huge fire at plastics recycling plant, public support for a ban increasing. 24. You might want to look up the specification of the outboard and see how many amps it puts out- might help you make your mind up. As I understand it, some only have a regulator which puts out a few amps, whereas others have a proper alternator which put out a lot of amps. I've got 2 batts on mine- Mariner Optimax outboard has an alternator which puts out 65 amps so can keep both charged. Rob has 1 batt, Yam outboard. He can run his electronics and baitwell during the day and batt still has enough to start the motor. Option 3- In the past we have both carried one of those inexpensive powerpacks for emergency starts in case the ancillaries have run the starting batt too low.
