Will edit/ finish this off later too! So, this month has seen the release of the findings of ‘Sea Angling 2012’ and also the official designation of the first 27 MCZ’s. Marine Conservation is beginning to go mainstream! This could be the start of the groundswell of public support which we need to protect and develop the protection and restoration of our fisheries. Let’s hope, and better than that, let’s help spread the word. I’ve also noticed a few articles about Studland. It missed out on being designated an MCZ, but the various organisations are beginning to raise public awareness about it again, in preparation for the next set of designations. My Shetland (and many other Shetlands!) has a foam-filled hull. On the plus side- it's technically 'unsinkable'. On the down side- many have problems with water in the foam (mine doesn't). It may be only foam, but the foam adds a lot of weight when it's on dry land/trailer. Once it is in, you still need to make sure there are no holes in the floor for water to get to the foam. If you are putting it in make sure it's truly closed-cell foam. Closed-cell doesn't absorb as much water as open-cell (it can still absorb a bit) Once the foam gets wet, it can be a bugger (technical term) to dry out. On mine I cut a couple of holes in the floor and fitted water-tight hatches so that I can check to see if the foam is still dry.

Exactly the kind of question/feedback to ask the MMO/SIFCA! This represents a significant proportion of the SIFCA area of responsibility (I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the figures!) The areas covered in this have been identified as being ecologically important. As we all know there are other ecologically important areas locally, and the hope is that more areas will follow. But feedback to the MMO/SIFCA will make this more likely...

Bottom Towed Fishing Gear byelaw Southern IFCA is formally advertising a byelaw to prohibit the use of bottom towed fishing gear to protect reefs and seagrass within European Marine Sites within the Southern IFCA District. This byelaw will introduce management in: Lyme Bay and Torbay candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC); Studland to Portland cSAC; Chesil and The Fleet SPA and SAC; Poole Harbour SPA; South Wight Maritime SAC; Solent Maritime SAC; Solent and Southampton Water SPA; and, Chichester and Langstone Harbour SPA and Portsmouth Harbour SPA. The byelaw follows extensive consultation and is accompanied by an Impact Assessment. Maps of the closed areas may be found in Annex 5 of the Impact Assessment . The byelaw will contribute to UK compliance with the EU Habitats Directive and Birds Directive, in line with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' revised approach to the management or fisheries in EMS.
