I have certainly found cuttle to catch cod, ray and conger however shape and size do seem to matter on the day

that's one hell of a days fishing KAm - well done. How did the others on the boat fair?
  4. yep Alun - that's what I was seeing
  5. I admit I have given up on it (early I admit but it looked poor Sat / Sun) so you will proabably have a great day out wrecking or on the rips in a F0-1...........
  6. as I can't win another rod this year I am giving it a miss for a bit Charlie...............
  7. It's not going to make a whole lot of difference to the loads on your transom when towing so leaving it there is fine Suspect you will loose it if you leave it unattended - one way or another (rip the mounting off the transom, cut it off, unbolt mounting or remove it from mounting). Don't Fit it properly so it's doesn't fall off..................you might use a lanyard if installing it/removing it at sea but it's not going to prevent it disappearing if the OB comes off at 25 knots in a rough sea - and may well result in more expensive damage to the hull and main engine if it does 'hold'.
  8. Paul, er yep that's me moored at the Quay....................? I believe you can stay 1 night at Wareham Quay, and that there are no charges associated with any stays - certainly haven't seen or been approached for dosh ever. There's a lot of river water running down right now so the level is reasonable but it can be quite shallow on the quay at LWS so people tend to 'do a tide' coming up with the first flood and back with the second ebb. Beers good on the Quay, little Italian rest is good too (may need to book) and there's a chippie just up the road.
  9. plenty of water - never less than 4" under my props.......... as Alun say's Wareham Quay - a great run at this time of year when the trip boats aren't using the lower Quay section and the run to the bottom of the river is at 30knots not 7 (I don't do 10..........) had the good camera with me in cxase I met up with someone wanting pics........... ......... but they were too busy catching wrasse!
  10. I have searched long and hard but can't find a decent pint on Brownsea, and don't carry the rubber thingy in winter either 'cos it gets in the way on fishing trips, hence we went the other way.............. it was great to be out on the water.
  11. called you up around 1100h on C6 but you must have been hidden behind the castle from me - so I went to the pub instead! glad you had a good day - we ran up to Warham today and had a great time.......but no fishing
  12. I may be around - if so I will call first and run out and take some photos if you would like at the time.
  13. indeed did notice when looking at all the figs last year theough that the bream commercial landing tonnage was huge relative to various other catches - esp flatties
  14. come on Bob - you aren't comparing like for like. One's inc vat the other it's on top............ as you say - amazing!
  15. doesn't get much more sensible that that for the Poole area Paul. I am sure you will get days of great fun out with the family and the fishing rods - from time to time. my experiences suggest they don't mix - with the possible exception of a couple of small light rods for mackerel to go on the bbq when anchored up round to the west on an oily calm summers day................
  16. bit late to move the boat Mike............

    Sea Angler

well there's one born every minute and I feel for it this time........... still for only
  18. If the weather plays ball Adam I might be available for a 'photoshoot' for you. Current plans have me down in Poole and the boats in the water........... What time do you have in mind? Will load the camera gear in the car anyway.
  19. extremely smart Adam - the purists might question the position of the compass but on balance I think I would have done exactly the same in your shoes. I had enough space for the compass to be in front of the instruments and visible between them (just!)
  20. Thanks Martin Well - having now seen the comp sheet for 2007 I can only marvel at the work that has gone on 'behind the scenes' in recent months. Personally I believe the variation introduced to the regular series of comps will make it significantly more attractive to fish from time to time; although I can see it detracting from a more purist approach. The sponsorship deals are amazing and diverse - well done all involved! 8th of June booked off as holiday - if only we get the same weather as last year......... Finally it is great to see from the fish recorder that "Following outstanding bass catches in July 2007............" - clearly the ability to predict in the same way that the fishing mags often announce what's happening in a month based on previous years (as they go to press a little early........... ) is a pre requisite for Fish recorders.
  21. Adam, Do it properly as already suggested. If the hull is double skinned or whatever I would have thought that means drilling oversize on the inside and sealing with exoxy resin before redrilling exact. Obviously there are real experts to advise in detail but I would have thought doing it this way you end up with a proper closable live feed for both the deck wash and the livewell. If you cut from inside to the angle of the hull, using the larger up to the hull first then exact through the hull back up from the outside using the same pilot hole you maintain the hull integrety but completely seal the various layers. The hull slope can then be accomadated with a wooden piece epoxied on the inside to tighten up against.
  22. that would be why they have rubber bushes? Dunno. I enquired about them as the rear props on duoprops are susceptible to 'cavitation corrosion' and I thought SS would remove the need to repaint them every couple of years and my volvo dealer advised against it. most stainless OB props have a rubber bush designed to 'fail' as part of the drive train in the event of a 'sudden deacceleration' ; this also applies to the Alpha drives (which I believe share a fair amount with the larger Merc OBs including props). duo prop arrangements share nothing with the OBs and I am not aware of any 'hub' arrangements - however I thought this thread was about Adam's OB requirements absolutely agree that the main advantage is thinner blades without flex associated with the alloy or composite material. personally I also like to be comfortable that I am polishing the prop rather than destroying it where silt, sand or light gravel bars have to be traversed....... re the 'stainless bust drives' argument - yes but....in practice you have to be extrememly unlucky (and quiet inventive) to bring the prop to bear on a solid object without contacting the leg itself.......... main reason they aren't standard on all drives is price, price and price - they would add about 20% to the base volvo drive I believe; not great from a marketing perspective for units designed to be cost effective drop in's to base boat models.

    Boat Rigs

Chucking in my 2p (based on my rig wallet).......... 1. simple running ledger to either single hook or double hook - I find that fishing a double hook well is better than 2 single hook set up with one or both rods in the holder! Personally I use a 3 way swivel to create my 'dropper' and keep it short and 2" further than it's length from the weight etc 2. helicopter rigs (see previous posts) - excellent for all drift fishing with both single hook and pennel snoods; live or dead bait and they really do make a huge difference over the 'standard' ball lead or other running ledger. Worth the effort to make up a few and store carefully. 3. plaice rigs - let your imagination run wild! 4. single hook simple paternoster for wrasse - be prepared to loose a few! 5. 1 up / 1 down bream rigs. 6. I tend to make flying collar rigs up from scratch as and when required - they are simple and tend to have to be remade a few times anyway in a days wrecking! I have to admit I don't do species hunts etc and rarely use any form of scratching rig I am however absolutely convinced that coloured leads, snood lengths and good rig design can both reduce tangles and increase catch rates - but you have to fish them well too!
