    Anchor Trip

Harry - no. You have to rig a seperate trip line on those or go without. Reg - I believe that this is a product of fishing small boats in an area with significant ledges that can have very quick tidal flows and nasty overfalls - all appearing in a moment. 98% of the time I would tie a stuck anchor to the stern on Phaeton to rip it out without a second thought - well maybe a thought as to whether it's actually going to come out! The other 2% I have been know to wait out a whole tide until slack water before getting involved in trying to recover the damm thing!
  2. certainly looks a good deal. see it's a 2006 model - no wonder I haven't heard of it!
  3. Alun - weather Monday will be idyllic - it's Tuesday the big, unforcasted, front will hit.
  4. I for one have never heard of this rod...............didn't think that would have been seen as an overly constructive comment before but now feel the need to respond overall the enjoyment I have had from various rods has in the main been proportional to their cost - but even the really cheap ones work!

influence of the sun and moon m8 tide drift ps I am currently on the wagon so will unfortunately have to miss out on your little concoction (or come off the wagon I suppose..............)

suspect you will have the oportunity to substitute flattie fanatic brill boy or dogs pollacks if you perform over the comming week.......................otherwise it's going to be mudhopper for a fair bit I suspect
  8. This is a good example of why I won't have my email address on here...........pm's work fine and club members have it available but it's too dangerous on boards

and an excellent one too Mudhopper............. do not be temptet to even take a turn around that stern cleat - just lead the warp over it so that you know where it is and can steam confidently forwards to break out the trip etc As Adam has already said many of these techniques will not be suitable for the smallest boats - in this one for example if the anchor is really stuck the downward pressure that could be bought to bear on the rear quarter could be an issue and care must be taken.
  10. that will all be OK then.............. I know what you mean about the differences 'offshore' but the conditions we came back from Guernsay in last summer, on both occassions, were such that we wouldn't have gone 'the other way'! much much happier with it behind me - not good heading into much at all really and i'm not crossing at 12 knots Sure I'll find a window though - one of the advantages of changeable conditions and 6 hour tidal streams.
  11. 6s and 7s .............ekkkkk. N4 w3 S1-2 are my parameters else it's going to be a week in work........... on the other hand at least I have a pretty big window so heading over Wed wouldn't be a disaster (assuming you have left some beer in the pubs by then!)
  12. for closure - thanks again Rich"! Bearings installed and the reel is transformed; don't know why I spent time trying to re do the old bearings as I did (clean in petrol, new oil etc) when
  13. Looking at the latest from UK weather online it's showing a NW - NE 2-3 for Tuesday, after a settled period of light Westerlies............. Then Wednesday the Sun comes out in Alderney with light ENE winds. Clearly someone somewhere is taking the p*** and building our expectations to a cresendo before an almighty crash with the arrival of a huge front Monday and S 5-6..............but just maybe those weather gods have decided to give us a break? Am I the only one that sees all the good news as just another precursor to disaster? The fishing getting delayed until our arrival, the weather, the bait (mackerel arriving).............. what's that radio advert - if it's too good to be true..............
  14. Sounds like they took it seriously! What's a size 4 hook look like? Secret suspicion that the barbs on my 16/0 circles would be bigger! Long long time since I saw 49 fish aboard (excluding mackerel and dogs of course) and 7 species was obbviously the return on a lot of hard work - well done.

I found the early articles and mag generally to be 'right on th emoney' for me as a small boat angler. So much so that I took out a sub. This was allowed to lapse this month for many of the reasons / observations above........nuf said. However, I also agree that if someone wrote interesting articles then the mag would probably print them! Personally I remain of the view that the subject of knots has not yet been done even half decently by any UK magazine in the last 10 years - and that includes the SA series that started well but basically lost the plot. With the increased interest in lighter line fishing knots start to become important - tieing the hook to an 80lb trace for cod is somewhat less critical when using 30lb mainline.
  16. wondered if that was you off Swanage Jack - couldn't see your stern as we passed and no call so we headed on. only really out for fuel and a test after all the works but had a couple of rods on baord with bait and lunch......... bobbed around on the reef in the (slight) lee of St Albans but not much happening - moved right into the Pool for a lovely mirror calm hour and a bite then another go on the reef saw a single wrasse to Dave about 2lb. ran back to finish the labours - oil and filter, both fuel filters and engine coolant drain/refresh nice to be out but quite franly anchored behind Brownsea with a few tinnies and the BBQ would have been more fun (honest)
  17. I'm with you. Important test for any boat I have had is 'can I easily deploy the ladder from the water and is it long enough for a cold tierd overweight guy to get onto and start climbing up?' Many many do not have the lower rung low enough. Realise this is more for the larger boats of course but smaller ones need to have a solution available.
  18. some might swap the whole holiday package willingly Alun........but in tis case I will shed a )brief) tear for you if the weather and fishing go well...............
  19. agree - and it also makes 9 under testing irrelevant on that set up. finally you can't isolate battery A from the charging circuit so charging Bat B will always be dependant on the state of charge and potentially condition of A. Looks like a slip up - aren't diagrams a wonderfull alternative to words!
  20. now Adam - whilst a GPS card may let your laptop know where it is ....................? GRPS maybe? catch 22 though - if you are catching enough to stream you are catching to many to mess around with a video camera and data services! like Sam's vision a lot - sunny calm etc etc
  21. my hero................... ty
  22. this bit's got me confused Adam............ letting out line on the drift when a take is indicated I do understand though
  23. my only records are held on here - have you looked back over April's catch reports on the catch report forum? you can see th eprevious year too!

he has a seperate GPS source in the form of a 'smart ariel' (like a GPS card for a PC or Palm) connected direct to his radio which displays the position on it's screen.
  25. Rich, Bearing numbers are as follows - L-1680 HH and R- 1350 ZZ measurements OD 1.6 ID 0.8 Depth 0.5 and 1.3 / 0.5 / 0.4 CM respectively (which sort of ties up with the codes!) need 2 of each asap (if they could be posted that would be great - see end) obviously meet any costs etc plus a touch of 'lubrication' I aim to be down in Poole Friday night quite late then launch / test saturday
