Cant do the 48 hour justice, but am going on Friday as planned to the cod grounds. Forecast looks flat calm later with a flood all day. Setting off from Parkstone at 0700 return arround 1700hrs Looking for crew, either 1 or 2 to keep costs down. Will also hope to hook up with Fugazi as a buddy boat, so may be spaces with Gordon as well. Phone 07946 48 72 68 or post here if interested - best to call if last minute as sometimes these posts dont get read till its too late!!! PaulF

Charlie, I dont know whether saturday would be a good one to split a group of boats - one to go wrecking or mid channel, one to go to the ringstead ledges (depending on how they fished on the way over) or shambles then round the corner for the triggers. I had an experience trying to tow a pair of kyacks at the weekend, and managed to capsize one (with an oversize occupant in it) - but then towed the pair in a line without bodies at 10knts no problem... so it wouldnt be impossible to do this if one group of Yaks wanted to go the same direction as some boats... Can we start a forum discussion from those who know these waters a little better. Presumably the shambles are OK for the flatties and portland race for the bass ? this time of year. Paul

Sorry for the confusion Guys, just got in from work so was on radio silence. I wont be taking my boat tomorow, but would be looking to do the trip on the 18th June (Friday) if this gives a little more time to plan ahead. Paul

I was thinking exactly the same Adam!!!! If anyone would like to crew, I'll take mine - post here or PM me........ otherwise I'd love the chance of a ride on JV Paul

Being always in a hurry to get going, a few times I have forgotten to open the vent screw on the tank in service - and the engine has died as soon as I open the throttle, with the result that the tank is a bit 'flatter' than usual, but no great problem as opening the vent screw and it returns to original shape. Also have found that changes to temperature overnight can cause the same symptom if the vent is left closed. Last time I was out, the engine spluttered to a stop, I tried pumping the bulb but this felt like it was only pumping air - and thinking it was doggy fuel or a blockage, changed over to a spare tank in the fuel locker. Only when getting ashore and investigating I saw what the problem was The fuel pick up had dropped off and was lying in the bottom of the tank - also virtually impossible to retrieve with a tank full of fuel. When I got it out, I wondered 1. why it had a serrious kink in the plastic tube 2. what kept it from falling off the connector anyway, as its a straight clearance fit with no hose barbs or hose clips. Then I put it back together, and thought the likely cause was, crushed fuel tank (even a small depression can bend the tube) Mushroom pick up isnt supported by the base of the fuel tank, then works its way off. It was only a matter of time.... As can be seen in the image, the length of the pick up tube means the mushroom is resting on the base of the tank, raised up by 2mm or so by small lugs on the face of the suction mushroom. (so there's not mushroom underneath it - got it ??) So, I'm working my way through the other tanks to check whether the others have the same problem, and in future, I think I wont bother closing the vent screw on connected tanks to avoid this happening. Its just possible to view the suction through the filling hole when the can is empty - so once you know what to look for, you can check this each time you fill up. Paul

This year, 2010, also replaced all the bearings at Henderson Bearings, in Ringwood. I took the race along, and the first thing the guy said was "where's the rest of it" - meaning the cups that are driven into the hub. He confirmed what this thread says - its false economy to replace just the race - I'm sure this is what 90% of the trailer shops do to save time - indeed when I went along to Ambrow trailers in barrack road - all they offered me was half a bearing!! Anyway, from some pretty rusty parts which you couldnt read the numbers he measured the race and cups diameter, then just went and got some from the shelf. These were bradley 250mm hubs, and they fitted perfectly. I now know the bearing numbers to quote if ever I need to check prices again. Paul

Best of Luck Colin and Bobbi, Wind forecast looks good and settled - hope you have a smooth trip. I've been forced to work Friday, so wont be on the water after all.
-
My cruising speed is slightly faster, about 17-18knts on smooth sea, with 4700 RPM. (but this is an 80 hp and a much lighter semi displacement boat). Isnt The orkadian a displacement hull ? I only really get to test the fuel consumption when doing the longer runs, as I find lots of stop start operation burns more fuel. On a longer run, I would be better than 1 l/mile (these are naughty miles not statute). Unless you have a fuel flowmeter, its a bit hard to judge. Regards Paul

Colin, I know you are planning to motor her back to Poole?? - are you doing finishing touches and setting off friday or thursday? Might join in the convoy if you post your passage plan.... and get some snaps with the SLR.. Paul

I would try the ledge because of its variety - the patch is quite specific where you are and very rough in places, and the tide doesnt flow through there quite like the ledge. Also the ledge fishes flood and ebb. I would motor slowly across the ledge looking for where the depth drops off to 17m on the bournemouth side and try to fish a slope (ie the rocks) The bream will be amongst them, possibility of bass as well. You can also drift the deeper parts over the sand for the mackerel. Good Luck.. "give Poole small boats" a call on Ch6 and I'm sure someone will respond if they are out. Regards Paul

Great Pictures Guys.... really brings the sport to life being close up to all the action. A great advertisment for the Kayak, even though I'm not so sure about being that close to the pointy end of a large tope.... and all the "fish wrestling" involved. You lot are as daft as brushes Keep the reports coming!!! Paul

Looks a bit blowy from the SW. Metcheck and Windguru boith forecasting 16-17Knts. Lets hope they are all wrong.... I wont be fishing, sadly.... Paul

Available for Skiing??? Next Year??? Regards Paul

Thanks Rob, your welcome anytime...!! There seemed to be a reasonable plan - to fish over the last of the ebb on the patch, and head over to peverill for the slack for a few drifts, then settle down for the Bream on the flood.... It was cold and lifeless on the first attempt on the patch, and the fresh wind was numbing to say the least. Luckily, the second part of the plan was better, the wind dropped for a good few hours and in the sunshine we had early summer jumbo mackeral and our own sealife Dolphin display... fantastic creatures... Rob spotted them making their way up from Durlston due to the cloud of seagulls overhead. They did a good job of rounding up the mackerel, then shot under the boat, leaving us to get back to feathering up the remains of the shoal We then anchored up in the chosen spot, and fished for the Bream for a couple of hours. Rob was first in, with a decent fish of around 2lb... the first of a dozen fish, a mixture of blue 'boys' and some 'dont knows'. We kept some of the larger ones, and the rest went back... Then quite suddenly, the bites dried up, maybe the tide had just slackened too much. At any rate we were keen for an early bath, so we headed back in, pausing for the dolphin show in the Swash... jeese, I hope these guys dont play here in the summer with all the boat traffic!!! Paul

Hi Chaps, Has anyone a 4HP - pref 4-stroke short shaft for me to borrow for a trial on my inflatable - one evening perhaps.... One trip is all it would need, as i'm comparing it to the 2HP I've got currently. Paul
-
Very Nice Boat !!!!!....... we are talking of the one behind the inflatable arent we ?? You may find that the sheer enjoyment of the twin engines outweighs the prospect of managing on one. Two engines will get you up on the plane much faster, then you can throttle back so they are running sweetly - the economy will be better than running a single at nearly full throttle. The only downside is the servicing and getting the same output from both. Have great Fun in Her. Paul
-
Hi Mike, I had the same problem with a newish 2hp 4 stroke Yam. They said there was some poop in the jets..... and it gets in there due to topping up. Ran in the tank OK, but then under load opening up the throttle more than 1/2 way and it would conk out ... very annoying.... Hope you get it sorted Paul
-
Alan, You could try BHG Marine over at Bucklers hard - they often get exchanges in. If its no good then at least you can take it back. Paul
-
Thanks Paul, youre a star... havent forgotten the slabs by the way, just awaiting the time and opportunity. Regards

For my trailer re-furbishment, I'm considering replacing the galv/ plated washers on the rollers with Nylon ones, as the previous lot rusted out in no time and the added friction stops the rollers doing what they are supposed to do. Only problem is I cant find less than 100's of washers, M20 (suit 19mm roller axle) at 20 -
