On fridays return from swanage, with my daughter on board, we were chatting awayand didnt see a pot bouy pushed low in the water in the confused ebb race at old harry. Suddenly we were over it,and with a thump like we,d struck the bottom, I cut the throttle immediately. I expected, a loop of rope round the prop, but the bouy popped up astern, so we got through the race, and stopped to take a look. Luckily, the gearbox seemed ok, but the prop was like a cauliflower.. After a few thumps with the mallet, it was good enough to go, but the vibration above 8knts was awful. So we limped into poole and stuffed the boat on her mooring... I was amazed by how much damage a rope can do. Good job we werent miles out either.....im now thinking an alloy prop is pretty fragile and having a spare wouldnt be a bad idea...though changing it in an emergency would have to be a last resort...Oi. So, time for a trip to propeller solutions...unless, anyone knows of an alternative????? Paul

Great News for you both.... make the most of every moment!!!! Happy Days!! Paul

Just looked at the weather forecast for mid channel today. This weekend Adam and the other skippers decided to bin the trip to Alderney and Cherbourg as Sundays weather looked 'iffy' Turned out to be a good call safety wise, the channel bouy observation at 0700hrs this morning was 27 knts southerly. It had been 10-12knts at dawn !!! Anyway, we had a great 2 days at Weymouth, wrecking for Cod and Pollack on Friday, and drfting the banks on Saturday in the sunshine for... more Cod and Bass!! Many Thanks for inviting me along on JV, and putting us on the fish, Adam. - I really enjoyed the trip. I'm sure they'll be plenty of pics and reports to come! Paul

Or another 'hole in the ground' to pour money down... looking on the bright side of course Paul

Because it was such a nice evening, I decided to crack on with a job I've been dreading.. dismantling the trailer hubs and inspecting the brakes. last year, after just one year since a garage refit at a well known place in Christchurch... I was left with a disaster to repair. rotted brake shoes and bearings so shot, they had to be heated up to get them off the shaft. Then I fitted a backplate flushing modification (courtesy of Charlie A) and bearing savers to the hubs. I only use the trailer eery 8-10 weeks to haul the boat out for a scrub, and then the trailer sits in the yard after that. Within a few minutes, I had the hub off and this is the result without any cleaning up - bearings all shiny, back plates not bad at all. I would recommend the bearing savers to anyone!!

Hi Greg, Hope to see you over in Alderney too... fingers crossed for a calm weather spell... I'm looking forward to checking out Mrs Sea... looks a great boat... though I preferred the name of one of your previous boats "er outdoors" wasnt it? Paul

Noooooo! I dont believe it..... It cant be the Greg Casey from years ago, I know we used to share a common interest, sea based.... and you bought my last sailing boat from me, But.... didnt know we shared another common interest... Drinking aside!!!! Are you Mrs Sea in disguise ?? Paul

Hi Col, This has happened to me once as well - but I put it down to a senior moment. I dont think I tilted the engine fully until it comes to rest, and the weight bearing on the piston overcame the hydraulics whilst the pump was off. Hope it isnt serious. Mine stays put even with a small weep from the piston. I was tempted to say mine keeps up for weeks on end - but I thought Jim would be reading this!!!! Paul

All depends on what you want to keep alive... as previously mentioned. small livebaits like pollack will live all day in a bucket changed over a few times an hour. Mackerel will die for many reasons all too quickly... but 90% of the clubs livebaiters will be using a bilge pump over the side hooked up to their battery - it uses less than an amp, so can run all day. I use this tank for rinsing my engine on the mooring - and can double up for baits. This year I added the bilge pump instead of using my deckwask - but there's enough flexibility to put the water in the top or the bottom. Mine overflows to the deck - but if your decks are not self draining, then sit the tank up on a stand so it overflows back over the side . Paul

Pity the flat calm is thursday, but Friday looks reasonable... and its my day off. Anyone else on the water ? I was planning on heading over to the Ledge from Poole to chase the Bass..... Paul

Well you were probably too busy holding on for much "Banging" - any port in a storm and all that.

Peter, I've got Bennets hydraulic sport tabs on my Orkney, fitted them 4 years ago and not had any problems whatsoever, and virtually maintenance free (except antifouling / anodes) They will easily correct a port or starb, list for example when someone steps across the deck or if the fishbox / gear are placed on one side. But I would question why fit tabs to correct a problem which shouldnt exist ? as the outlay is quite high. Having said that, they have other advantages in being able to trim your boats bow down (mine rides high and can strike the chop harshly unless you lower the nose a bit) and when the boat is carrying loads of gear at the back. Good Luck sorting it out! Paul

Simon, probably too late now but I've always used Elford marine services 01202 468816 / 07802 297547. I dont know if he's still working full time, I need also to book a service. He's mobile so comes to Poole area. I've always assumed he's Yamaha approved ????? Paul

Sadly, its that time of year...with the Polisher Yep my thoughts exactly Adam... regarding a bigger boat - definitely wont be blue - shows every scuff mark..... and there was I thinking you'd paid someone to do it and muttering and cussing all weekend as I slaved away... next year I'll do what Adam did!!! However big result... I've got the boat on the drive last weekend, and I'm still alive to tell the tale without any fall out from 'er indoors'..... yet! Paul
