I know what you are trying to say Kam - thats one will loose money on a boat - that is fact with almost anything you buy and sell on (houses excluded) But I still feel that your example is incorrect. The fact that BW has had a new engine comes under the bad luck / maintenance heading IMO and cant be added to the 'real' cost of the boat - but I take your point. Also the 1k is a little unfair, really it would be a percentage...had we lost 1k on Tara that would have been 33% of the total cost. What I am getting at is that James and I MADE

    HH VHF Advice?

Decided to wait for a better model, as I dont believe in false economy...I have used and trust Icom's range of VHF so had decided to wait for one of their handhelds. Then, browsing through good ol' ebay at the weekend I noticed one of Icoms top line models for auction...never used, waterproof, rechargable etc, etc and no bids! Anyway I won it for under 90 squid...bargin methinks. Another thing off the list for the new season! Strange thing though...on the back it has a small icom sticker that reads ' Icom VHF Marine Transceiver - not intended for distress and safety purposes' What the hell is it intended for then??

On a serious note....I know how much my sport costs, and yes, it shocked me when I first got invloved...I thought carp fishing cost enough...trying running a boat as well. But, and a big but..take one other popular sport..football for instance. A good mate of mine is a devout Chelsea fan. He will travel to all home games, add up the season ticket cost, the petrol travelling etc and it is a far whack...all for 90 minutes. Golf is also in a similar league re. club membership (

  8. ...nothing wrong with the boat, its the anglers who fish from her!...Ill have you know she skippered the National Boat Champion last year!
  9. I have 2 batts...(im sure all of this has been covered before - Ill see if I can find the post). One is under the transom, the other is over 12 feet away in the console. They both are wiried into a battery switch which is in the middle of the transom. I simply used the voltage calculator (above) and then bought sufficiantly thick battery wire to negate the drop in voltage. It actually wasnt as think as I thought. This system works perfectly and I would recommend it to anyone. Paul - if you want a hand give me a shout. Adam
  10. Charlie - Do you have to pay to join the BCC? Or what is the requirement for entry?

Yep, Mike at UK Hooks gave me a free box to sample. They are like a long shank circle. Still work on the same principle but have an Aberdeen type shank to aid baiting - worms are now easy. AF
  12. Just serviced all three of my reels - using the above info to help. Was a little nervous, as I have taken star drags apart before and not been able to put them back together - no such issue with the lever drags. Each one took about 1/2 hour. I stripped each one, washed the parts on hot soapy water and then lightly greased each part as I re-assembled them. They now all run like new. Interesting was that the Okuma Titus Gold seemed much better built than the shimano's - huge main gearing, all machined internals (no plastic), and I have looked after it a little more than the others...but one of the retaining screws was corroded in and needed drilling out (ouch! taking a DeWalt to the side of my

    HI

Hi Zed, Welcome to our site. Echo all of Newboy's sentiments above - Im sure we can get you aboard Blue Warrior sometime this summer. Are you thinking of joining the club? - You dont have to have a boat, and is a sure fire way of crewing for others and getting afloat more often. Regards Adam
  14. ...Charlie - just remind them who holds the club conger record!
  15. This was the answer I found: 'Decca Navigator, headquartered in a large residential property at Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire, had several chains deployed through the UK and signal locking between the systems was possible. One chain, the Sterling Chain, provided trans-Atlantic navigation facilities using Slaves situated in Nova Scotia, Canada and Newfoundland, Canada.' A fasinating subject - I wonder which is correct?

    Lazy Line

Dont write the lazy line off completely. Although I no longer use it, (have easy and safe access to the bow on BW) IF you continue to use the lazy line, and need to cut the warp in an emergancy it is just a case of pulling the slack part of the unused warp which will be in the cockpit thus pulling the boat uptide where you will meet the main anchor warp and can cut it away. 17. As it seems to be this time of year where little fishing is done and everyone is putting off the jobs that need doing on our boats and spending hours in front of the PC - I thought Id introduce a little Quiz posting...others - feel free to enter a question. Tonights is: 'Where is/was the HQ of Decca Navigator?'

Why? What do they need to be made of? I may be able to help but it depends on exactly what you need. Adam
  19. Dont know much about Decca, but a quick search of the WWW shows up some interesting info. Didnt know that it used Low frequency radio waves to plot a position...anyway to answer your question, No they are not in use any longer. Decca ceased at midnight on the 31st March 2000. Adam
  20. Ill do one...its been a while since my last and Im a little behind on my ' one per month!!' Ill see if I can whack one out by the end of the week. Adam
  21. Kam, The club has over 100 members - not all of the boats are on here...
  22. They both have independant switches which have internal fuses...just didnt log the detail on the diagram...thankf for your concern though. I carry about 20 spare fuses in BW's toolkit, differing sizes. AF
  23. I have 30 amp cable between the batts and terminal. But Gordon and I just added up the total amperage of the electronics on BW and it didnt even come to 10 amps in total!!

Duncan, Started on 8/0 Tuna circles (similar to the one above). Was using a 1/8th of a whole cuttle about the size of a mackeral fillet, so not a massive bait. I was hooking it as you should with circles, just nicking the thin end of the bait and letting the rest hang clear. I had maybe half a dozen takes where I struck, fish on and then nothing. The congers were not bucking the rods over as they sometimes do, but mouthing the baits like dogfish....I suspect that the congers were not getting the whole bait in when I struck - so I changed to 8/0 O'shaunesseys. I hooked more fish this way as I was on pennels and the hooks tend to stand a bit further clear of the bait, also I was 'knitting' the bait on with the normal hooks. BUT, the hookholds wernt brilliant - the hook holds on the circles were perfect everytime. Adam

Personally I have started using No.2 the circle hook. I have bought hundreds of these from UK Hooks in different sizes for all fishing this year. I also dont think you can knock the std size 2 aberdeen - good hooks. But after experiments this year I am 'hooked' (excuse the pun!) on circle hooks. My most recent purchase was some 10/0 tuna circles from Mike at UK Hooks. I used these on Thurs for the eels. While I had less hooked fish on these hooks, the ones I did hook stayed hooked. When I went over to 8/0 o'shaunesseys I hooked far more fish - but lost too many through poor hook holds - draw your own conclusions. PS: Like the hook of the red hooks also. AF
