...thats not relevant.... Im only pulling your leg! 45lb is a great fish, my target this year. The fish caught from Poole last year was a Thresher from around Old Harry area in a 17' open dory.

    'Reel' Horror!!

Yep, It really needs new bearings and gears, but Ive cleaned it out, re-packed the bearings, re-greased it and it now runs better than before but still feels like it has been filled with gravel. Adam

Nice boat - I have seen you a few times through the summer Im sure... Look forward to you joining in this year! Adam
  8. An ex.Poole skipper who has now moved to Wales to charter had a book of marks and numbers. In this book was a page entitled: ' Christchurch Screamers' Aparently each autumn he would fish this mark and on a fairly regular basis hook into unseen beasts that would fight like nothing he had ever experianced before. He nevr landed any, but the money went on them being Common Skate. This would be going back about 10/15 years, and yes, these marks were off the end of Xchurch ledge. I have never heard or seen a Common skate being caught along the South Coast for at least 30 years now....can anyone prove me wrong?

  12. Was tempted to name and shame, but I wont be that cruel!! Any guesses whose reel this is? I offerded to service it after hearing how bad it sounded and felt! It is without doubt the worse reel I have ever opened!...on taking the front plate off - a large pile of metal dust fell from the reel - about a teaspoon worth. Everything was present inside the reel -makeral guts, salt, sand....everything apart from grease!!! Anyway after a bit (2.5 hours) of TLC it is alot better, but still needs new gears and bearings.

Hi John, Welcome to the club - what is your boat and boat name? Adam
  14. Thanks Peter - I think you hit the nail on the head with that last post.
  15. The bottom drops/rises from about 40' to 140' in about 1/4 mile - hence when you have a decent tide squashing that amount of water, you get some serious overfalls!
  16. Sorry, duncan read the post a bit too quick and mis-interprited it. AF
  17. Interesting points as I said before - Im quite glad it has sparked an interesting thread. I was just interested in the satfisfaction side of things, as Charlie said - the pride in making something yourself. It would not be a money issue - I can clearly see that the cost and time equation doesnt work. Interesting point Duncan made about having a more proffessional finish from the boatyard....Im not one to comment with little experiance of bigger boats, but from what I have seen and certianly heard, the finish often isnt fantastic - especially on the lower budget 23-25' boats. They often tend to have the fit out of a 16-18' boat on a bigger scale and when producing on a volume does the engineer really care how smooth he gets a wooden dash profile. Anyway - it certianly has put a few more prospectives on the idea.

I have never tried it, but I know of a few who have. Their are a few dedicated anglers from the IOW who fish in pursuit of these beasts. The numbers are no way as prolific as in the 70's but they do still catch them and 3/4 sharks a day is not completely unheard of. You very much need to know exactly where to go - its not a chuck it and chance it affair. The grounds are not 'between The Needles and St Catherines' but due South of St Catherines by approx 20/30 miles. Im no means an expert on this, but have read a fair bit about it. Adam
  19. Thanks for the input guys. Its not something Im thinking of immediatly, but looking ahead (as we optimistic anglers do!) I would like to upgrage from 16' to something maybe 23/25' in maybe 2/3 years time. Now I could just buy a bigger vessel, or I could buy the mouldings and have a go myself. As I said, not firm plans yet, but just thinking of ideas for the future. Just a really daunting subject thats all - expecially when you have invested maybe 10k in a 'huge fibreglass bathtub!' getting it wrong is a BIG, COSTLY error. Adam
  20. OK - So how does one gain that hands on experiance, or would you recommend just jumping in and learning as you go?
  21. Wind is going to be fair all week, so with big tides and a bit of a breeze the Shambles would probably be unfishable. Wind for Monday and Tues is looking like 3-4 N/NW with smallish tides, ideal to break Gordons conger duck! I think we will aim for an early start on Tues from Poole. Ill keep an eye on the weather though and if it shifts maybe we will go for later in the week. Gordon - Ill call you tomorrow re times and bait etc.. Adam
  22. Just a really random, one off question.... ' How does one learn to build a boat?' Just something I have been thinking about recently. If you want to learn to do wood working you can do a college course, if you want to learn to fish you can buy a magazine, websites etc... But I have now spoken and know of several people that have built (fit out, engine etc etc, basically from bare mouldings) their own boats, many of the club members have infact - but it seems to be, as someone who knows very little about this a real minefield of a subject. Am just interested thats all....maybe in a few years who knows!
  23. I am thinking of taking advantage of the decent forecast this week and getting out one day - does anyone else fancy tagging along? Looking at Tues at the mo - forecast gives NE 3-4 and small tides. Adam

    Quicksilver Boat

The no feedback system works on a friction principle which is used to give an effect a little like hydraulic steering. Basically the cables run stiffer in the linings, meaning that any 'feedback' from the engine or caused by waves putting the boat offline have minimal effect. It makes the steering a little heavier than normal cables, but not noticably so - as I said I can steer BW with just a couple of fingers. Not too sure on the cost - it comes as std on the Warriors. Quicksilver Boat

I only have a 60 on BW, but have never noticed the pulling to one side. I have the no feedback steering, and would recommend it. I can steer lock to lock with just a couple of fingers even at slow speeds and the boat never deviates. One trip this winter on the way back from the island I never touched the wheel all the way home. Mark had normal cables and upgraded to Telfon coated jobbies to make them smoother.
