Bob and I took Splash-Out, out for a change last night - what with BW laid up in the drive and all..... What a cracking eve! Apart from not being able to launch at Wick. We launched from Muddiford - which was interesting. It was a low water spring of 0.5m when we arrived, and we still slipped with ease - it also saves a 1.5m run at 4knots through the harbour!! After scraping our bellies on the sandbar, it was 27knots all the way down to Hurst where we planned to drift for bass. It looked perfect, so fishy - but the bass didnt think so. So at 7.30 we headed back to Barton for the sole. Much better than last week! I missed 2 cracking bites before hooking up into a nice bream about 1.75lb. Then I had a thornback, followed by a smoothy and topped off by another thorny!! Bob performed well after a slow start taking 2 nice pan sized sole, a bass and a doogie! Easy run in and home for midnight. Shall definatly be using Muddiford more for launching, esp. in the Winter when its not so busy.

Had a bit of a fiasco this morning.....hence BW never made it to Select Marine - she is now booked in for next Weds. Therefore I will need to become crew on another boat for the day. Weather is looking superb, so hope the bass are up for it!! Billy: Will we be able to rely on Eddie for our bait? Just to recap - suggest we meet at the slip for 7.30am?

Yep, I also read the report with interest - just the ticket for a small boat - Ill have a look now, but I imagine the price will be steep, all of the signal enhancing reflectors usually are.... It makes me wonder why when the sea is such a dangerous place, and the lifeboat and safety teams cost so much to run - that safety gear costs a bomb in the 1st place?????? Flares, reflectors, lifejackets, EPIRB's and Rafts, - all bloody expensive!
-
Whiskey Bravo and the Lifeboat were following up a broken mayday call from the xchurch / poole bay area - it was from a small fishing boat - hence the reason they probably came over to you - I'm surprised they didnt send a line down - the state of tara at the moment!!!!

Martin, no problem - I have plenty of the material at the moment, but will bear in mind - cheers. Fixing.... I screwed and siliconed them in to the lateral strengtheners that the Warriors have, a little white silicone to make them look seemless. Ill knock a set out for the next meeting.

The Problem?.....As most of us know space aboard our boats is usually at a premium, even some of the larger vessels could sometimes use a little more deck space. I have lost count of the number of nets, gaffs, boat hooks and rods which have been broken or damaged over the past few years. They either get left leaning on the gunwhale, or more commonly on the deck waiting for a misplaced foot to come crashing down. The Solution?.... Rifle Rack Rod Holders. These are horizontally mounted rod holders which fix inside the boat on the gunwhales. The above items can then be mounted securely out of harms way, but to hand when needed, leaving the deck clear of clutter. These are available commercially, Nautequipe sell them - @

OK Dave, no problem. Right - Just seen the forecast, and while I dont want to count any chickens, it finally is looking pretty good. The lovely young lady on the TV this morning, promised chilly but clear starts, but glourious sunshine and light winds for the weekend, with Bmth getting the best of it!!!!! Just need to round up who is coming, so far I have: BW (if she is fixed) + 1 Crew Splash Out + 1 crew Maverick Neo Loyal Royal Pink Squid - (Martin, can you check with eddie?) Les L, Mad Mike, Pete Snr and Billy as crew.

Woah!...Bob, way to go!..... Am I there yet?.....

Jimbo, I have sent you an email - but I would be happy to take them off your hands - collecting is no problem. Let me know. Adam

Well the fishing as Jimbob put it was very poor,.....but the day wasnt a total wash-out for me....after all I did beat James! Ok, Ok....even if it was by 3 points! I've got him firmly in my sights now! - Im around 50 points behind, so some contaminated fuel, or food poisoning should see to him on the last match!!!! MUST DEFEND MY TITLE!!!!
-
Hi Jimbo, welcome to our forum! Now....just need to make sure I dont get confued between Jimbo and Jimbob!

Cheers guys - I guess Charlie is right - could be something simple such as a worn HT lead (I hope) on the other hand it may not be ...whatever it is, it will need sorting, and I suppose it is just part of the fun (?) of owning ones own vessel. 'Standing in a cold shower tearing up

My bets on Covet!!

Thanks for the offer Dave - If BW is out of action, Ill gladly take you up on the offer. BTW - you do know it's not THIS sunday, but next?...

Alan, I think you will find that the ridges shown on the FF, are actually the bottom contours, and not the FF reading incorrectly, I previously had the 100 and the 160 units so am aware of their performance. Ill PM you the no's for Xray and the Sole marks when I have a spare 5 mins and can plug the plotter in. Adam

Alan, We have a pretty specific spot that we fish - I think James sent you a PM with the nos.?? Their are loads and loads of small but sharp ridges this is where the soles lie. Your description sounds pretty spot on though. Interesting comment about the FF not working in a swell...what unit is it? I have a Garmin 240, and no matter what the swell or waves are doing I can get a very good indication of the bottom feature provided I am moving under 10 knots. Adam

Indeed their are several type of fixing available - and they are pretty strong. They have to be for fixing shelves etc to stud walling. However I would be dubius about using them to fis the bracket - no matter how strong they are. Even a small aux. engine still weighs quite a bit, add the forces of the engine working and it bouncing around on the road, and over time, I'm not convinced they would hold. Cant you just use a super long bolt through both skins with massive washers?

Took a risk with the wind last night and headed out to Barton for a spot of Sole fishing. On arriving at the slip, a good F5 was pusing from the W - but as we got out the harbour, it was pretty flat due to the protection from the land - just a rolling swell from the SW. Bob and I drifted for an hour or so, and I managed a tasty bass for tea, bob managed a bream. We anchored the mark about 8pm. Wind against tide and the rolling swell of the front quarter mean the boat swinging in a 270 deg arch al night - not easy to fish. I managed a last gasp sole, Bob struggled along with PJ, and the man with the shiney nether regions managed to spawn a load of rays, sole, bass, smoothhounds and bream....bloody bloke! Good night though - shame about the engine on the way home......

Last month I forked out on two new sets of brake shoes - this month it looks like the engine.... It has been getting a little louder as of late, but last night when coming back in, she started to struggle to plane...when we reached the harbour, I slowed down, then the fastest she would push us was 8knots! I limped back in with the engine sounding like a bag of nails. Phoned Tony this morning, and shes going in next Thurs. Worried though, as it sounds like a compression problem....sounds expensive So BW is out of the comp for the weekend - looks like Tara will be pushed into action.
