  1. I dont bother tying them before I go - it just gives them a chance to go rusty. I tie them on site. I use 60lb trace with a pair of 6/0 Varivas Big Mouth's for cod. I 'snell' (google it) the top hook using a knotless-knot and then tie on the bottom hook. This gives a fixed pennel. For whiting - a simple patenoster made from 30lb mono, a swivel top and bottom and make a pair of booms from the trace line with overhand loops. Simples.
  2. Dont get your hopes up too early! Windguru is giving it nasty still! Lets keep our eyes peeled towards the end of the week.
  3. It looks crap I'll eat my hat if it is fishable on Sunday! Therefore COMP IS POSTPONED The new date will be Sunday 29th.
  4. A little too early to make the call, but looking at Windguru, maybe not! I'll make a call by Weds. Looks pretty dire for the weekend
  5. You beat me to it Al. I agree. I suggest we move it 1 week to the 29th Nov. Adam
  6. You need a FENSA certificate.... offically. You'll have to ring me mate, in a bit hectic at the moment and not online much. I'll try and grab a kitchen brochure when I next in the office and drop it by.
  7. Charlie, If youre fitting the windows yourself, we sell these. Ditto the kitchen and the flooring etc - well in fact anything you need, just drop me a line. Adam

    COP specs

http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/brown-withpage8.pdf Its a long document, but worth reading through and understanding the basics. If you are building it and intend to actually get it coded, you'll need to follow it to the letter, plus take advice from your surveyor. If you just want the boat to be near to coding as reasonably possible (as I did) read it, makes notes on the pertinant areas and do your best. As you mention the basics are things like rail heights, upstands on deck hatches, saftey rails and wires. Things like nav lights need adhering to even outside of the COP. For our sized boats it is all pretty simple.
  9. PS: Old houses are healthy! They are designed to breath - letting moisture in and out - more frequent air changes are better for us. Also 17-19 deg is fine, it's just that nowadays we are all used to modern houses that are designed nearly air tight to reach construction standards. They work on the opposite principle to old houses in that they aim to keep warm air in as long as possible - efficiant yes - healthy? No.... Living and owning a really old house it a bit of a mindset - it takes a while, but then you kind of really get used to it, and once you do - I bet you wouldnt go back - we certianly wouldnt! We stayed with family in Liverpool last weekend - in their newish house.... we slept with all the windows open as it was so flippin hot due to the rads being on 24/7!
  10. Sounds like my house Tom.... but slightly warmer!! Only joking - but you do have double glazing (god knows how a GII listed house ended up with those horrible things! We werent allowed to touch our wooden sashes) Anyway, the first winter here we FROZE!! On cold mornings the condensation froze on the inside.... I remember more than on morning having steaming breath when I came downstairs..... we too had moved from a smallis 3 bed modern bungalow into a 350 yr old big farmhouse.... The second year I draughtproofed any doors and windows that needed it. I added 200mm insulation in the roof, shelled out on decent secondary glazing (allowed on GII) installed a woodburner (simply the best
  11. Blimey!! I go away for the weekend and look what happens! Seems like a crap day all round. So far Ive had 1 plaice, 1 dab and 1 ray booked in!
  12. " Did I say Saturday darling?? no, no, no.... you must be mistaken!! You should know by now that all club comps are on a Sunday.... silly you!! Never mind" Sat is looking the better day, so unless it changes dramatically the comp will be on.
  13. Dave, You are right - I missed it off the list of rule. I couldnt find an old set, so re-typed them from scratch and missed this. You do need to register - but the names and contacts have now changed. It isnt set in stone - registering with me or by posting on here is preferable, but we are a friendly close knit club, and provided you let someone on the comittee know, who can let me or post it on the forum it will be OK. Paul D - can you add the registration element to the rules above? TA
  14. Ummm......Yes, I guess so? There is a trophy for each - so why not. It is basically two comps in one. The split between rays and flatties gives the smaller inshore boats a chance at winning.
  15. JV is insured through Porthcawl for offshore use. About
  16. There has been some discussion over these points of late, and Ive been working to bring both the club record fish list and the competition rules up to date. Paul D now has these and will be posting them on here shortly.
  17. I must have a different piece of seaweed Pete.... mine is showing Sunday as the better day. I'll try and make a call tomorrow (Thurs) for Sat, or Friday if it looks like Sunday is an option?
  18. The forecast is still looking a bit messy for the week ahead.... The weekend looks very much borderline at the moment for a 'fish all areas' comp. What are peoples views - would you rather it be cancelled to a better day, or are you happy fishing the harbour / inshore sheltered areas for plaice etc??
  19. Nope, if Sun looks OK then I'll move it a day to Sun. Keep and eye on here. Windguru still shows F4/5 NW
  20. Looks like I'm too late on this thread - has already been answered correctly. I havent put a list of entrants up yet as the long range is looking crap.
  21. Rory, If you want some 1 on 1 advice out on the boat, just give me a shout. I'd be happy to meet you on your boat down in Poole one afternoon and have a play around with anchors, buoys etc in the harbour. The same goes for anyone else. 07957 829902 or PM me. Adam
  22. http://www.autoglym.com/enGB/product-prodd...06VQ=HD&Range=1 Halfords sell it. All of their range are brilliant.

    Scales

Good point Rob. I loved loved my digi scales over the past few years - they are bomb proof, unlike spring or dial scales which do need looking after.... ....but after yesterday I've lost faith in them and will be going back to a trusty set of Reuben Heatons or Salters. I test mine periodically (about once a year!)
  24. Well.... I'm not superstitious.... but.... you never know! I didnt want to take the risk when I bought my Warrior 175 - which was named - 'Old Trout'!!! So I made up a teak name plate with old trout on it and glued it inside the steering console..... ..... then changed the name to Out of the Blue. ...... then 4 months later the engine blew up!! Mind you - I didnt change the name of Blue Warrior and she blew up too!!
  25. Boat polishing is hard work, so I like to keep it simple. An electric mop does help. I use Farecla http://www.farecla.com/ as a cutting compound if I need to shift any scratches. As for polish - the Carnuba wax is pretty good - but after trying many things the longest lasting I've found is Auto Glym - Super Resin Polish. Mainly sold for polishing cars - it is so, so easy to use - doesnt take much elbow grease to polish it off and leaves a really nice coating on the gelcoat. For those who dont know, regular applications of a wax/polish stops the gel going chalky, makes the water run off the surface easier and makes the boat easier to clean. Bob and I polished JV the other week - took about 10 mins
