Well done guys on what sounds like an exciting trip These big fish stories are really wetting my appitite for an imminent return to getting back to fishing A nice report Mike and a shame that the big one again got away. It sounds like it was a fast fish by Martins discription and your having to wind to catch up with it would probably count out Rays or Huss I would think a late season tope or shark Isn't it great watching the youngsters at the helm at speed for the first time, wide eyed excitment Beats the playstation. Hi Duncan As I said simple is how I aproach most but not all of my rigs The portland rig is a very good example of a more complicated one that outfishes the simple alternatives what I was trying to advise against on the floating pennel was the small floating hook I used to use for bait presentation purposes. After just landing some big fish that were only held on fairly light 4/0 hooks I decided to use larger and stronger hooks for that purpose Charlie

I must say that once again I agree with Duncan and Martin at his rig tying demo a few months back KISS Keep it simple stupid Is how I appoach a lot of my rigs My floating pennels now use two big hooks, 6/0 if uptiding 8/0 if downtiding I have caught so many large fish that have shaken the fixed hook out and are only held on the top floating hook, that I no longer use a smaller 4/0 hook for that job 1st hook threaded on the trace and the other tied on the end of strong mono Bait the fixed hook, slide the other hook down the trace take three turns of the trace around the shank of the hook and then pass the point through the top of the bait. Sounds like you had a pleasant day Paul Well done for sticking with the plan and Big baits, its easy to be tempted to scale down to avoid a blank Shame the big one got away but thats fishing, you will get another chance soon enough I am sure Charlie

Hi Tom It may be keeping the professionals focused on your build and as keen as you, with the suppliers delivering on time that are the main potential stumbling blocks. Charlie

Hi Tom I suppose 2000 man hours is two men full time in that time frame, so it is achievable. But you can only do so much when waiting for things to cure and the tasks have to be done in a certain order If it is finished like the New Tiger Lily was [when I saw it just prior to launching] I am sure the owners will be very well pleased. Hi Tom No intention to P on the fire. That seems a very tight deadline to me as the pictures are only showing the mould and its November tomorrow. 6 months from moulding to Norway, makes my own build seem even slower . I am sure all this has been discussed at great length so I hope that the build goes to plan. It sound like a lot of cornish boatbulders will be very busy this winter. Peter and Fred have much more experiance than me on these things and certainly more so with Cats. Its amazing how boat building just sems to go on and on. I have delayed survey twice due to the time and effort required to clear the list of finishing off jobs Good luck Charlie

Thanks Guys Dan has decided and bought a shiny new 7000 BG NLD I think I will probably whip the screws out and grease them up before use He has matched it with the uptider also purchased and hopes to get amongst the winter fish and spring pollack to test it out. Thanks Alun Charlie

Hi Mike I had not realised that you had been critisised for keeping your big fish I think I asked if it was kept but only out of interest regarding the catch and release trophy and the new Club record Alan I believe the biggest is a double figure fish that won the bass only comp for Alan Mc I am very keen on conservation but do not expect all fish to be returned providing those taken will be used and not wasted/ killed for no purpose Its the anglers choice and we should respect it. Duncan I know what you mean about the edges, GW were only about 10mm high but still a little awkward, although I think the board was large enough to use the center for tricky jobs. Mike I have seen boards in NZ that had drains running through hoses to the groundbait tubes on the stern, effective but tricky to clean and stow I just chopped the groundbait on mine and let the blood trickle off over the stern. If in shallows i just pushed the groundbait in from the board little and often. down side the bait can follow the same route. I am sure Bob F can remember us losing all our worms that way on a Club comp Charlie

Without any wish to restart an old discussion, wind anyone up or hijack the original thread I think that Paul and Duncan and others have as the saying goes hit the nail on the head. If Members wish to record a catch to keep us all informed of how the general fishing is going that is very welcome. If the fish are to be entered for any of the Club comps including Species trophy or fish of the month or for Club Records then they need to be weighed and witnessed. However if the Member is not interested in trophys for the fish. the weight/size can be estimated and the fish still recorded in the book as an estimated entry for interest only. Perhaps with the constant input of new Members this needs to be noted somewhere [ on the competition list and rules?] so that they can be aware of the policy. Charlie
