I suppose the suggestion that as you have sorta recieved a windfall that the drinks are on you would be met by an eery silence, apart from the faint whistle of a cold wind blowing across the tundra? Just a thought Mad Mike PS It's nice to here about Yellow Penguin as they will be the service agents for my Susuki, very reassuring.

    Bad Back

Jack, I have just remembered (prompted by your post) a New Zealand device that I read about some years ago. Imagin if you will a stainless steel tube about a foot long which is welded to a free movement stainless ball and socket arrangement, this in turn is welded to a flat fixing plate which is fastened to the gunnel. In use, once a fish is struck the butt end of the rod is dropped into the tube and held one handed above the reel whilst the other hand turns the reel. As the pivoting fulcrum is now fixed to the boat all the effort used is from the arms and shoulders. I am certain that one could be fabricated quite easily. Mad Mike
  5. Charlie to finish his now! I'm sure it wont be long. Yes indeed, when she hits the water we will all be like little ducklings in a row behind Mother Duck I think I mentioned it before, we really must get some flotilla photo's done one sunny day. 7. We are on F19 nose in with the aft deck facing the view over Holes bay. We actualy prefer that side because on 19 there is very little passing traffic and no boats with smoking engines coming off the fuel dock or slipway. We also met a character called Gerry who drags for ragworm, hopefully a usefull contact, leave a note on his car and a box of rag appears next day......... I guess you are at Cobbs? Do come and have a chat mate. (bring yer own bacon, we're not made of money you know. Daddies brown sauce is on us) Mad Mike

  10. A day after Jas', I am proud to announce the arrival of our Merry Fisher 625 Pride of Morpork II. We picked her up from Tom at Salterns had an excellent hand over and sea trials and I have to admit to being 'chuffed to mint balls' as they say in the Old Country. We have left her snug in her berth at Cobbs and can't wait to get back to her to get out on the oggin now we have a poncy warm enclosed cockpit to sit in. Mad Mike

    Skate

Thornbacks are quite definitely members of the taxonomic group RAY As too are Skate. If it makes it any clearer a skate is a member of the Ray Genus. Therefore one can not correctly say 'A thornback skate'. To be correct it has to be a 'Thornback RAY' The word Ray derives from the Latin 'Raja' which is the denomination given to the ray family. The whole grouping so far discovered is ...... Ocellate skate, Raja ackleyi Garman, 1881 African ray, Raja africana Capap

I believe skate and ray's are different spicies of the same genus. Skate being a specific stand alone species of the Ray family. This being the case then there should be a separate category for each species rather than a generic category for Rays. Mad Mike

    Boat Rod

I need some help and advice I think......... Up untill this coming season I have for the most part fished fairly light and in deeper fast running water (dolphin banks/ whitehouse grounds) uptided which allowed the use of leads of no more than 12oz. For the odd times I did downtide with 16 or 20oz leads I used a cheap Fladen boat rod which I guess would be about a 20lb category as I felt that to spend any more was unjustified. I am certainly no 'tackle snob' in fact far more the opposite and deliberately eschewing posh rods. Now with a bigger boat and the likelyhood of fishing further afield and in deeper faster running water I am wondering if I should treat myself to a 'proper' 30lb class rod. My problem is this.... I (no doubt due to ignorance) can not see where the difference or even what the difference is between a

    Braid Line

Yes I have it on my Shimano light spinning rod & fixed spool outfit. No prob's at all. I use a leader of 8lb memory free mono and straight to a plug if spinning or to a mono trace if bait fishing. Double the braid and tie it to the mono with an albright knot. Mad Mike
