That's one big tough boat. I am sure you will never lack for crew. Some of them might even bring their own bacon sarnies! Mad Mike

Geoff hopes......I have break back trailer which may be a bit easier Didn't they tell you it's YOUR back that gets broken!?!? Baiter is truely crap! You have to get the outfit so very far out before there is enough depth to float a fag paper. Mad Mike

I am heavily biased as I believe Baiter is one of the worst launch sites in the universe! But here goes.......... The best time is high springs but as Poole gets sorta 2 highs ( a high, a stand, a teeny drop, a teeny 2nd flood and a 2nd high) spread over 6hrs this gives you a wide window of opportunity. But watchout for the ebb the whole shooting match goes out in 3 hours flat and Baiter slip is about 1/2 a mile from the waters edge. The problem with Baiter is that it is built into one of the shallowest bays in the harbour. The gradient of the slip is so shallow that the trailer has to be unhitched from the car and pushed some 50 to 100 ft out into the water to get sufficient depth to float the boat. Christchurch and Lymington both have infinately better slips. Mad Mike

Even better is their puzzled look as they peer over the side of the boat to see what has happened. Then one of the goons gets out of the boat with his trousers all rolled up to the knee. As he steps gingerly into 2" of water amazed wonderment crosses his face, rapidly followed by total disbelief. Eventualy another goon steps out and wanders back along the path they took. He soon discovers that rolled up trousers are no protection against wet clothes as he steps from Stony Islands sheer edge and straight into 5ft of water. Oh the joy of seeing a group of tossers reaping the benifits of their ignorance and attitude Mad Mike

He was leaving Poole!!! Not coming in!!!! Unbelievable!!! Totaly on the wrong side and what the heck was he doing over there?? Mad Mike

Crashed I dare say. Just on the port side going into Poole harbour there is a big gravel and stone bank. It is very clearly marked by bouys. The channel rapidly shelves from 50ft to 2ft within 50ft or so. Stony Island is covered at high tide but it is easy to see from the swirling of the currents over it. Inside Stony there is a wide open area of water, smooth and flat usually. Every year there are several duck ups as large power power boats ignore the speed limit and rules of navigation and plough into it. Some of the best ones are the high powered speed boats steered by neanderthals who are screaming along at full power, see the flat water beyond Stony and steer straight for it. The banshee howl of 200hp at 6000rpm is shattered by a WHOOPH as the prop hits the stones, bits of expensive metal fly through the plume of spray and pebbles, and the propless engine revs up to an impossible 10000rpm just before the con rods break loose and shoot through the crank case On the other hand if you want a family trip at Poole, venturing carefully round the back of Stony one can anchor up in shallow water and let the kids explore 'their own island'. The Ripps seem to be a popular meeting place Sam......... Cargo ships collide mid-Channel A rescue operation was launched after a mid-Channel collision between two cargo ships that left a crew of up to 15 sailors stranded. Russian ship Yamal began listing to one side after colliding with Antiguan vessel Jessica B, 20 miles south of Anvil Point, Dorset, on Monday night. The Yamal, with its Russian crew still onboard, had to be escorted by a French tug towards the Isle of Wight. A helicopter and lifeboats were on hand to evacuate the ship if necessary. Deeper water The crew of the 133m (436ft) Jessica B, which was sailing from Antwerp to Dublin, reported minimal bow damage and continued on its journey. Both English and French coastguards responded to the crash, which took place in calm seas. BBC news 7605 Mad Mike

Thasa good idea......are 22mm plastic pipe brackets screwed to the strengthening ribs in the hull sides In practice have they proved strong enough? Then again I s'pose they'r cheap enough to replace. I think I will copy you But naturaly I will claim it as my own idea Mad Mike

Quote.......I have bulked the rail out with a piece of hose and duck tape, but fishing big leads in lots Try a good quality super glue, it should work. No joke! Mad Mike

I read in todays Echo that the RNLI have, as part of their justification for closure of part of the slip, complained that their access to the slip in the summer is hampered by all the pleasure boats. Therefore they are asking for a new lifeboat station to be built over what is now basicly the slipway. This application goes before Lymington council shortly Mad Mike

As the late John Wayne wuda said "You got a yellow streak runnin' down yer back Kincade!" I still think it would be good to have a 'defaced' standard pennant with a logo or initials of some sort on it. If they can print a T shirt foe a few bob doing a pennant should be cheap enough. Mad Mike

All real words I assure you As they say 'who needs to make it up' It's all there in real life. Jack, do you remember that old song ..... Your hip bone's connected to your thigh bone etc? ............... Well your stuffing box is connected to your stern gland and your stern gland is connected to your 'P' bracket It's all true I tell you!!!!!! Mad Mike

A Lock Tite stockist would do but make sure it's a Bearing Lock not a Stud Lock the bearing lock is infinitely stronger. A good motor factors would have it Brown Bros, Halfords should too. Mad Mike PS Ally foil shims could be used but if your shaft is phosphor bronze you will get an electrical action which will dissolve the ally foil. Also shimming can make the shaft run excentric by a thou or two which will eventualy affect your stearn bearing/stuffing box.
-
Prop er job......... if not then some shim and a pin will do the trick A good quality bearing lock fluid will also do the trick. For removal later use heat or a clout. The locking fluid has tremendous anti torque strength but poor sheer strength. Mad Mike

S'funny we have had a lot of green algae in the pond this year and for the first time ever. Weed growth has been huge and I have had to take out forkfulls of the stuff. Talking to the guy at the aquatic center I was told that this year was particularly bad for algae and weed. Summat to do with the weather no doubt? I wonder if my fresh water pond weed problems and the rate of weed growth at sea is coincidence. Also is that awful Japanese sea weed getting more profilic? I can remember when tha whole area from Studland to Old Harry was clear water and weed free. Mad Mike
