The latest (and worst in living memory) to hit Florida is Hurricane Francis and it's being followed by yet another (Hurricane Ivan). Not much to do with us one might think................. But if we think back to that spell of high wind and rain that we had mid August, well this was the aftermath of the first hurricane that hit FL at the begining of August. So I reckon we are going to have some really bad weather towards the end of September and the begining of October. Not that there is anything one can do about it of course....... Mad Mike

Down in Devon and Somerset and I guess elsewhere they make 'homes' for peeler crab. You need a section of forshore that is either private or you can visit daily and some clay ridge tiles. The tiles are placed to make tent like little caves at the mid tide mark. Lifted every day or so the peelers that have settled there are collected and sold to tackle shops nationwide. The beaches and estuaries where this is done commercialy are seriously guarded by large men and big dogs. But I'm thinking that bit of forshore between Mitchells and PYC could be utilised? We have a large (tall) bloke near by. But does he have a dog? Mad Mike

Paul, good news your leak is fixed. After I had finished the job, just as a check you understand I filled the boat up with water to see if any came out. No not a drop!!! Unfortuneatly the extra weight that was put on the trailer sorta bent an axle.........tore a rubber suspension unit.............................................................................................and pushed a support through the hull The good bit about that last thing is that all the water came out of the new hole As soon as it is dry I will attempt to fiX the new hole but you might want to bring a spare suspension unit and a few tools No need for thanks mate I'm happy to help any time Mad Mike

Those of you at Septembers meeting will remember (I hope) that I put in a request for old, surplus, and 'tried it once but didn't like it' fishing tackle to be donated as gifts to Cuban fishermen. For those who weren't there or have forgotten already (forgotten what? ) here is the background.......... I'm going on holiday to Cuba in October and Cuba is an odd set up to us in the first world. The only 'Cuban ' shops open to nationals sell only basics and the locals pay in Cuban Pesos. It is illegal for them to own $US, or even shop in a 'dollar shop'. There are no fishing tackle shops in Cuba. So even if they could afford it there is nothing to buy. They fish with string wrapped round an empty plastic bottle, so even 3m of mono' for a trace is a luxury. Hooks are used untill they wear away etc. So here's the thing. I want to take with me as much old fishing gear as I can to DONATE to these ordinary working Joes that I will be standing on the rocks fishing with. To us what is the rubbish at the bottom of our tackle box's to them is untold luxury and pleasure. If you guys can bring what you can spare to the OCTOBER meeting I will take it on. I am also going to take some photo's of this and write up a press release to send to various publications on my return. I think what is basicly free kudos will reflect very well on the club and it's activities. Mad Mike

Florida braced for new hurricane Frances is menacing the Bahamian capital, Nassau, and Florida Residents of the US state of Florida are again preparing themselves for the onslaught of a massive hurricane - the second in less than a month. More than half a million people have been ordered to evacuate their homes. Hurricane Frances has already battered the Turks and Caicos Islands and is now approaching the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau. The Bahamian prime minister has warned it could be the "most intense hurricane in recorded history". At least 19 people died in Florida and 2,000 were forced into temporary shelter when Hurricane Charley hit the state in August. Ed Rappaport, deputy director of the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami, said Hurricane Frances was just as strong as Charley, but twice the size. It could cause "the same kind of devastation over a larger size", he told NBC's Today programme. Tin roofs were torn off houses and trees ripped from the ground as Hurricane Frances' 145mph (235km/h) winds ploughed through the Turks and Caicos Islands on Thursday. More than a dozen homes were damaged but so far no injuries have been reported. Dangerous waves Florida residents are buying plywood to board up windows Residents in the Bahamas were battening down as the storm approached. Prime Minister Perry Christie urged islanders to stay calm, as he warned about the hurricane's possible size and strength. About three-quarters of a million residents in the Florida states of Palm Beach County, Brevard County and Broward County have been issued with evacuation orders. Many have been buying hurricane supplies, such as bottled water, torches and plywood boarding for windows. Governor Jeb Bush declared a state of emergency, but stressed: "We are prepared, we will respond and we will recover." Florida is still recovering from the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Charley, which is estimated to have cost insurers up to $11bn. Many people had to wait days for power to be fully restored, and national guard troops and police officers were deployed to stop incidents of looting Mad Mike.
