(quote) Only downside was clipping the pontoon and taking a chunk out of the bow when wading over with the boat whilst launching........ Paul if you want I can pop down one evening and fix that so you wouldn't see it. Give me a PM if you would like a hand. Mad Mike

Well as they say one lives and learns. I had never thought of it that way but I can now see that it could work....well well I'm gonna give that a go I think......... Thanks guys. Mad Mike

No, no point grip leads work by the grip wires digging in when they are draged by the current. When you down tide the grip wires will be pointing the wrong way. Mad Mike

1031 milli bars is very high so 1029mb is quite high. Generaly high pressure is good for fishing in the summer and some species feed profilicly during pressure rises (plaice for one) Rule of thumb....... If the Needles look realy hazy from Poole entrance then it's high pressure. which equals settled weather for a time If they are crystal clear then it's low pressure and you need to watch out for strong winds on weather fronts. Hi Les, no doubt we'll meet one day when your down here. Did you name the boat after a trip to Florida? We saw one in a side pass off the intercostal. Fantastic creatures with almost human like faces. Mad Mike

Personally I think that (if it is true) is a terrible rule and would want none of it. I don't bother to record what I catch as it matters so little to me. How does one measure the weight of enjoyment? Someone will catch a 25lb ray for the record book and some one else might catch a nice sole for the table. Who enjoys which more?? Me I just love the whole thing, from the early morning launch through to the calm of the end of the day return, and if I've caught fish so much the better. Mad Mike

WAY TO GO HELEN I love a cutting remark well delivered And that was a classic Now for goodness sake PLEASE don't go and out do him on Saturday 'cos I've got to spend the day with the poor lad on Sunday, and there's only so much wailing and sobbing I can take......... Mad Mike

Hi Mike, it's Mike, honest I'm not taking the Mike Mike it is me Mike. Personally I reckon that you and I should form a composite Mike and enter all our catches as Mike. That way we're sure to win summat by the end of the year. Even better if we get any more Mikes we can go for a revolution and call the whole shooting match The MIKES Poole bay etc Mad Mike

Go out through the Haven turn left towards B'mth and look for either a lot of birds wheeling and diving over a patch of water about 1/2 mile out, or a collection of boats with all the anglers franticly feathering for fish. Mad Mike

Buy 4pm rich and I had fleeces and coats on, rich was even donning a wooley hat I would have felt more at home winter cod fishing that sat out summer fishing for stingrays I think this sort of condition is called a 'Sea Fret' ? I'm sure that someone here will know if that's right. Mike

Mike MIKE! 'e can't be Mike too that's takin the Mike that is An' I'm not keen on them sussexes either Mike (a) or Mike ( . Now I don't mind changin' my name to summat like 'Sir' or 'Master' if you lot don' mind, but you lot is so fussy that'll be a non starter. If someone (Martin) don't settle this, then that other geezer an' me 'll have to fight it out a dawn with dead pout at 10 paces AND I'm not being a Mick not never nohow!!!!! Where the tide is light (Poole patches) and/or if your drifting rig as though you were ledgering for Carp. Infact a carp outfit is good for most light sea fishing. For the period of slack water re rig to a paternoster with the hook link about 18" to 2ft above the lead. A VERY good method with a carp outfit is to fish UPTIDE from the anchored boat. Get some 2 to 4oz leads with those spikes on them (ask for uptide leads)> Rig them as a running ledger with the weight on a short running boom and a hook trace of about 2ft to 3ft. To fish cast WELL forward of the nose of the boat as it lies to the anchor at an angle of about 10 o'clock to the boats nose at 12o'clock. Immediately let the line to continue to run out after the rig hits the water and continue to do so untill a large belly of line has formed and the line from the rod tip is streaming behind the boat. Engage the clutch on the reel. Put the rod DOWN!! and scratch your horlicks or whatever there is nowt else to do. A bite is anything that looks like the lead has lifted off and come free (usualy the rod tip nods and then comes up and the line goes slack). Reel in like MAD (don't bother to strike the fish is already there) untill you feel the fish.......... Mike (Quote.....What a nice bunch you are!) Only 'till we've hooked you in to the brotherhood. Then it's all pagan rites and bag of chips.

I understand that in what we Westerners call the Far East, old age is venerated for the wisdom that is accumulated with the passing of years. And what a jolly good idea that is too. Now you know why!! Mike

It's all subjective mate one mans light tackle is anothers wrecking outfit (almost ) I like to fish light and as an example here are three outfits I use........ 5ft carbon bait caster Shimano coriolis bait cast reel with 5kg spider braid. I use this for pluging, spinning, and trolling a red gill. Fishes up to 4oz lead 7ft carbon Shimano spining rod Shimano 4000c center pin with 3kg spider braid I use this for bream, flaties, bass, pollock and whatever. Fishes up to 2oz lead (I have caught and landed bonito, dorado and barracuda to 20lb on this outfit just after I bought it in Sarasota FL) 11ft carbon Carp rod shimano multiplier with 10kg spider braid I use this for light up tideing and drift lining for bass Fishes up to 4oz lead None of these outfits are any good when anchored and I want to BOTTOM fish in anything over 30ft of water with a tide running. But on the drift they work fine and boy do you know you've got a fish on!!!! However ther are those who will say that I am fishing way too light and that they prefer heavier 'light tackle'. I hope this is some help, but as usual the most simple of questions brings forth a deluge of contradictory answers ....HeHe Mike

Anyhow, I know why my boat doesnt reach 21 knots now 21kts!!! Don't you go a buyin' a new prop' and scarin' me to death with nautical high velocamatrix. A nice gentle 12knts is perfectly alright for an old bloke like me!!! "here we go into the wild blue yonder" tader dar etc Mike

Hi Benny, how are you and the Jets? If this quip goes over your head then it prooves how old I am and how young you are I take it you mean Poole harbour and Bay? that being the case here goes.. First the boring bits......... We have very fast running tides in most areas around here so the boat MUST have a good anchor and at least 100ft preferably more of anchor rope. ('tis the only way you'll stop if the engine fails) The harbour entrance is hell on a summer weekend try to make your trip through it with the tide but if not keep to the side. Left going out to fish Bournemouth area. Right going out to fish Old Harry & Swanage area. The tides are gentler on the Bournemouth side of things and there are some good fishing marks out in the bay. On a chart you will see Poole Patches (both inner & Outer) You can find them by the density of pot barker bouys in their vacinity. Drifting with the current and the wind is good too anywhere on a band about 1/4 mile wide from Boscombe to Bournemouth. For more info join our happy band. I mean they took me so they will take anybody mate. Mike

Oh you do ask good questions Trouble is that there are no good (simple) answers Power.............. 200hp tractor 200hp sports car Both have 200hp yes ? Well sort of...... The thing that makes the diferance is how fast the engine has to go to give you 200hp. The tractor does it almost from the word go The sports car has to build up it's speed before it starts giving 200hp. The operative word is ....TORQUE or 'twisting power' A fast reving sports petrol engine will only develop its full power once up to efficient speed. So its use to drive a big heavy slow displacement boat is useless A big heavy slow running diesel can revolve its shaft even at slow speed against a lot of resistance, but do not forget part of the weight that is has to move is its own weight as well as the craft. So you can see there would be no advantage in having a sod off big heavy engine in a boat that is aimed to be light and fast. On the other hand a fast petrol engine is ideal for a fast light craft. But where it falls down is the fact that it has to run fast to get its power. Useless therefore for a big heavy displacement boat that only goes at slow speed. These answers only skim the surface of the subject and there are many 'Ah but' and 'What about' arguments and answers but I for one can't be arsed to get that pernickerty about it Mike
