Wedger Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Juat to say a big thank you to Paul & especially the 'knife man James' on Neo for getting me out of a sticky spot today ! A moments distraction and hesitation saw me pick up my own sandeel trawl warp on the DP. very lucky to have been in calm waters at the time. Thanks again chaps. I hope it didn't eat into your comp. time and thanks too, go to Alfresco for keeping an ear to the radio. Trev Quote
Brian Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Did anyone catch anything, we blanked on "MegaByte", appart from a few checkers that kept stealing the bait. Quote
pirky Posted October 10, 2009 Author Report Posted October 10, 2009 Ben and I managed a few Bream and two Tub Gurnards......We didn't get out 'til after noon and had a very slow afternoon.....Ben was bored by 3 and I only managed to interest him with a quick switch to the Loe and then the Swash....all to no avail !! Disappointing.....but what a cracking day.......fish would have been a bonus... Hope others did better...but from the radio calls I am not so sure !! Thanks to Brian, Dave and Charlie for keeping an ear open !! Dave Quote
Cherpy Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Lets hope there are plenty more days like today to come in the following winter months. Ben Quote
Barney Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 Well what a glorious day plenty of rays and steady action all day. Unfortunately the rays were all sun rays not that im complaining. Dog fish nearly every drop and a few Bream just to keep me amused. Thanks Mike for the good company and sorry we didnt find the rays. Its exactly a year since my very first trip out on the grinch. What a year makes and i must say that joining this club was the best thing i could of done. I have learnt so much from members and the forum and im definately safer than i would have been. A big thank you to all that have made me feel so welcome. Mick Quote
Jim Posted October 10, 2009 Report Posted October 10, 2009 I nipped down to Hamworthy Beach this morning 10:30 ish with Jacquie and my Father -in-Law and the dog. I heard a noise across the harbour and looked up. I think it was MegaByte zipping off towards Wareham. Envious ? - yep ! Oh well. Off I went, - - - - - more digging at the Mother - in - Law's. You all had a cracking day for it. The fish are just Icing on the Cake ! Well Done. Jim Quote
plaicemat Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) Well, did anyone catch any flat things? Here I am with bated breath as I couldn't make it and everyone's being very coy. Come along, show and tell time. Terry. p.s. BTW Martin, Veronica would be impressed. The reason I'm up at silly o'clock on a Sunday and not going fishing is because I am being taken to a car boot sale. Yes. I know! Edited October 11, 2009 by plaicemat Quote
alun j. Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Terry, Apparently, there were a few decent blondes booked in! I don't know who or where, ... but I'd feel embarrased if I got anywhere with my best of 3 - 12 !! Lovely day out....... but fishing was very poor....out where we, and and several other boats were! Alun. Quote
Maverick Martin Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 p.s. BTW Martin, Veronica would be impressed. Terry around the same time as ere indoors....I'll book you an appointment to see the car boot specialised, I believe they have found a cure FISHING Martin Quote
Brian Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 I heard a noise across the harbour and looked up. I think it was MegaByte zipping off towards Wareham. Probably was me. We launched at Cobbs, under Poole Bridge about 10ish and up to Wareham Channel, no luck up there, back down to drift off Patchins, blanked, so up towards Rockley then back into Holes Bay, picked up a mooring buoy for an hour or so. No fish but put some more time on the engine, soon be ready for it's 20 hour service. Quote
mike02380 Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thanks Barney, I had a great day, nevermind the lack of rays/flatties, seems like we weren't the only ones! I think the biggest problem we had were the micro bream stripping the bait before anything else could get a look in. Cracking boat you have there too. Quote
rich Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Despite having a plan which we stuck to, no fish came aboard Warren other than some (very) small chequers to Allan Green. Still a great day out in the sunshine. It seems we were not alone. Any explanation why so many boats could'nt get any fish? Rich Quote
Mike Fox Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Frisky had a great day yesterday, if it had been a species comp! We started betwixt the piers trying for the elusive plaice, and was surprised to find the mark devoid of club boats. After hoards of micro-bream, half a dozen tub gurnard, a small smoothhound, a dragonet ...but no mackerel...Carol caught another dab. Not a huge one, but in jest we weighed it at a shade under 4oz, so we recorded 3oz, and laughed that it might have beaten last year's winning plaice...and then carried on. An hour later that was the the only flattie we managed. We sprinted over to X-Ray on the last of the flood, having a quick chat with the crews of Neo and the Grinch, and tried to pick up our favoured mark...but a crabpot buoy made either anchoring, fishing or retrieval tricky, so we moved to a deeper part...hoping for some ray action. As others have said, a lovely sunny day, and hoards of dogfish...and bait-robbing bream...but no ray! On slack water the swell got noticeably worse, and with the prospect of wind over tide, we decided to up anchor and retrace our steps, swiftly followed by Abode 2 who had joined us. However, the previous stunning success on the flattie mark failed to be improved upon, so we dashed back to the harbour, trying a drift for plaice. Again failure, so we returned for the 5.30 bridge lift after having a brief chat with Alfresco (apols if we disturbed your fishing chaps!). Hope others did better! Mike, Carol, and George Quote
Brian Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 (edited) I don't know what it was like outside the harbour, but we didn't have very much water movement inside, which might account for the lack of bites. Edited October 11, 2009 by Brian Quote
carl/overdraft Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Just a note for you all, i was not in the comp yesterday (Aaron went off camping with sea cadets) just had a snoop around in the harbour and managed 4 Flounders best going at 2lb. Brian the new boat looks and sounds very nice good luck Carl. Quote
Brian Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thanks Carl Did you get your flounders where we saw you? we were plagued with crabs so moved. Quote
Manic Moore Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 First day out for a while so thanks to Charlie, Dan and Alun. The sun was out and the catering was good despite our regular Chef/crew/angler having to work. Bacon butties from the skipper for brunch, lobster tails salad and brown bread for lunch and Herta beach smoked hotdogs for afternoon tea Fishing was tough and other than a few bits Alun's 2 young blonds were all we could pull out of the bag. Although we do have a dilemma. The rest of Alfressco started fishing about half an before me as I was pratting about getting tackle sorted. So we decided to go back into the harbour and try a few drifts and bingo a 1lb 7oz plaice to me. Does it count? Thanks for a good fun day out chaps and good to be back out on the water again Regards Gordon Quote
great white Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Well that was a hard day we met in the dark to get and early start. and the lights were still on as we tried for fresh bait. three or four spots all had the same result, NOTHING As we went west the swells got bigger so I decided to go for comfort and stay very close to home. We fished hard trying all the baits and combinations we had, Alun had a baby blonde of 3lb 12oz in the morning, that we though would mean nothing but turned out to be the days heaviest fish. Some of the boats close by were reporting fish on the phone so we stuck with it, but eventually we had a move, a few more dogs and Alun another baby Blonde but no decent fish. By three we decided to try another plan and use the Poole Rag Alun had dug on the flat fish. a few bream checkers and wrasse outside. As nobody was in a rush for home we tried one more spot and Gordon bagged a small but welcome plaice. I will leave him to discuss that one with Adam. It was great to have Alun and Gordon on the boat again, sorry we did not find more fish. Next time I hope Charlie Quote
Paul D Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 No rays on Neo either. Set off around 7 AM and heard Otter's problems. Found trevor off the beachhuts and then spent around 45 mins - 1 hour attacking the rope wrapped around Otter's duoprop. This was not at all easy and if condition s had been lumpy would have been nigh on impossible. My crewman James did a sterling job cutting away the rope around the prop and nearly ended up over the side once as well. Still, all ended well when we saw Otter's props turning again and that is part of being in the club assisting others in need. We needn't have worried about missing any fishing time, since it was dire. We managed more dogfish than I could count plus a solitary starry smoothhound to James. Still, nice day to be out. Quote
carl/overdraft Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Thanks Carl Did you get your flounders where we saw you? we were plagued with crabs so moved. Yes Brian they were all caught in that spot. Very small polystyrene floats on hook lengths tested in the bath just enough to keep most of the crabs away. Quote
great white Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Well done Paul and of course James You did a great job mate, and better to help a friend in need than to sit wondering if he is OK. Happy to hear on the radio that all was sorted and that we were surplus to requirements, but would have been happy to come over if needed. May the fish gods smile on you next time out Charlie Quote

Adam F Posted October 11, 2009 Report Posted October 11, 2009 Blimey!! I go away for the weekend and look what happens! Seems like a crap day all round. So far Ive had 1 plaice, 1 dab and 1 ray booked in! Quote
pirky Posted October 11, 2009 Author Report Posted October 11, 2009 Well done Paul and James If that's what being a member of this club means then it warms the cockles of me 'art....proud to be amongst you all. And just to mention....Ben and I picked up an unmarked net on Saturday. Luckily we were on a slow drift and it was with our fishing lines......because it was in about 16 ft of water and was so calm and slow we were able to haul in up enough to free the weights and hooks by hand. No markers to be seen in close proximity and certainly none in any sort of line where the net was.......madness or what?? Thank goodness it wasn't on one of our moves uptide to drift and/ or around our prop. Dave Quote
