Adam F Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Well after a run of good fishing over xmas and plenty of cod, yesterday was the fish getting their own back.... it was just one of those days! The drive from Shaftesbury was cold, foggy and slippery, the forecast wasnt as said, instead we had a stiff NE wind across tide, making it sloppy, the plotter was playing up, the anchor buff came off (again) and in my haste to recover it ran over one of my rods winding 100 yds of braid around the prop, which required an hour hanging off the dive platform in 5c water and getting soaking wet legs. And to top it all off all Alun and I managed were a few doggies and small whiting. Ah well - you need the bad days to highlight the good ones! Quote
great white Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Well done Adam for posting after a day like that. But it was not just you. We had a very keen crew and great expectations, we even had a large stock of Sam Coles squid. But as you say the weather was far from the calm day forecasted. It was funny watching Sam's mate John trying to stand up without holding a rail. We endured a sloppy slow day, even with three moves we could not find any good fish, while we caught the same three species as last time, it was a struggle best fish a few 2lb whiting. caught by Sams mate John so he was happy. The company and the excellent lasagne for lunch nearly made up for the fishing. As you say Adam a few days like today make the goods days better, although I could still live without them. Still we had plenty of time to discuss Alderney in May Charlie Quote
alun j. Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 I felt disappointed more Adam, as he doesn't get out as much !! .... and I'd falsely teased him with the propect of a 'flat calm day' !!! [ hopeless forecasts !! ] Nevertheless, it's always good to get out........and the company and chat is enjoyable even when the fishing is so slow! Conditions seemed fairly good and the tide was no prob. My main thought was the big drop in water temp over the past week might have been the factor [??] . Fortunately, it doesn't seem to bother the flounders........so guess what I'll be next week? Thanks again for the trip Adam........ happy to go whenever you fancy! Alun. Quote
great white Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hi Alun I think we will put that one down as one to forget. There was a lot of talk on my boat yesterday, about a trip for the eels next time, if the Cod are thinning out. So you may be in the harbour and we may venture offshore for some long grey beasts. But I bet we both get a little more action. Tight lines Charlie Quote
duncan Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 thanks for posting this, both of you, I was getting close to packing a bag and coming down to stay on the boat for a few days (Rockley is closed for 2 months) in order to get out again.... I'll now wait until there is a really solid weather window - or spring! Quote
pirky Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Hard luck all of you......but thanks for the post......makes me realise I am not the only one it goes wrong for !! Better luck next time out. Dave Quote
Graham Nash Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Exactly Pirky .... It is refreshing to know that its not just us part timers that get it wrong ..... Mind you I get it wrong EVERY time ! Quote
Paul J Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Good post guys it puts things into persective and stops us getting carried away as a result of the recent Cod Fever PJ Quote
Osprey Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Well done guys for reporting a "normal" day. Adam, getting that braid off your prop must have been a nightmare, especially in those conditions. You deserve better luck next time. Martyn Quote
Gas Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Tough luck guys. Not looking good for the Cod comp if it ever comes of ? Quote
Ark Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Yelo had a trip out yesterday, not that good on the fishing front! Weather kicked up so made it sloppy! Still a bad days fishing is better than a good day at work! Try again for comp on Sunday keV Quote
Sinbad Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 Adam - tough luck on the fishing... could be an omen...a handful of the best anglers (yes Charlie included!!) I've just had the shaft seals replaced on my outboard - emulsified gearbox oil et al. Braid was the culprit, but It definately wasnt mine..... Its that dark green stuff - never catch me using that! Hope you got at it completely - might be worth putting the drysuit and flippers on and having the prop off?? Regards Paul Quote
alun j. Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 Adam had the prop off ......... and cleaned out........in the time it took me to get the trolleys back to the boat!! He untangled and retrieved quite a handful! All this started from a loose clip on the Alderney Ring's buoy! ....I 'm sure that will be sorted by the next trip! Quote
niggle Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Same for me today/Sunday just dogs and pout, but the sun was out but very very slow Nige Quote
great white Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Looks like the end of the cold spell has really confused the fish Catch reports on here and on WSF have really shown a slow down in catches over the past week or so I hope the cod have not gone early Charlie Quote
Maverick Martin Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Same here out of Poole today (Sunday), big swell but no big fish of any description Martin Quote
alfie Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 I was also out from Poole just yonder of the "plenty of spaces" car park. Lumpy it was with the only result being a couple of whiting of 3.5 Lb Moved inshore to calmer waters where the doggies were waiting for a late tea of Squid. Still the sun was out and I didn'thave to watch the Sunday long version of Eastenders Quote
