"The Pin". sounds the way to go.Andy is sure that there is not much height to the plates at either side of the roller, but if need be,we will replace the roller altogether, providing the Arvor has enough room under the roller to work with fresh bolts. We shall see. in the meantime many thanks to all our readers for thier help; advice ;support; and humour....jack

Mike, The good lady brought me home a video on fishing, she spotted in the local chatity shop...."Postcards from the Country..The Fishermans Tale." Cover shows a Fly fisherman, but fishing is fishing,so I watched it. The main theme centred on the river Tweed and the Salmon fishing. But the whole was a brief history of fishing in the Shetlands and the Borders. It covered the Hayday and decline of the herring industry. How bloody lunatic and depressing can non-conservation get ?.And the worst aspect is with all these records and information available we {the government ] have learned NOTHING....... Not very often I feel depressed, but its tempting. jack

[QUOMike, im interested in this as i have no room ahead of the roller to fit a restaining bar. Nor me Paul. also my overactive brain has been rehearsing moves, leaving me with the following doubts/queeries. 1. the strap will have to be above and over the roller. 2.Any fitted restraining strap would need to be high enough to allow the anchor stock to pass partially through it.when stored. 3. If it stands 2 or 3" proud . When you move foreward to recover the anchor, the warp will take the strain toward the stern. The warp will jump out of the roller [as it did before, causing damage to the wings ] and then all the strain will be pulling on one side of the strap,I feel the twisting force will damage the whole roller assembly and its support pillar,as it was never designed for this angle of strain. oooerrr..jack

Thanks Paul, Maybe a link from one of the running forums, the lounge for example, could be contrived to alert readers if a new entry has been added the the story archive..just a thought....jack

When I fish out of Barmouth in North wales,I have my boat on the "small craft register". this gives coastguard/harbourmaster details of your craft. I assume it is still operative, and if not ,I am sure someone will tell us. ps. I havent done it locally,it never occurred to me until now.. jack

[QUOThat's the source of your problem Jack. IMO you must have some method of stopping the rope jumping out (as it will do) of the stem head roller. A simple S/S strap bent into a U and fastened using the stem roller through bolt is what I use. Mad Mike TE] Hi Mike. Andy has been keeping up with this post [as it's dear to our hearts, and HIS back ]..He is to consult someone called either " Stainless Sid " or " Metal Mickey" [cant remember which ] to sort out a retaining strap over the front roller,Then with our recovery bouy ,in sight some 20+ feet ahead of the boat,I am sure we can cope without using the stern cleat at all.....jack

Rich. I watched when Alun j. was recovering his anchor last Sat. It brought back unhappy memories of countless back injuries in my younger days carrying out "hand hauling " of anchors, even from smaller craft.and in light of my seriously bad back these days,I can recomend useing any other method of recovery available, and a little tuition goes a long way. jack

You cant tell Andy and I anything bad about Arvor, We've been there and paid out the money to sort it !! I suspect the distributor may have been more at fault than the manufacturer 'though....Still its fine now,{other than too much safety rail, see anchor retrieval problems ]..This is the longest Andy has held on to the same boat, and he is well pleased with it now.....but he does like the new one with the all-flat deck !!..jack

Well done chaps, keeps the old grey matter ticking over, very inventive too, more to follow...jack

Yes. the cabin cruiser in the pic.goes in a much.straiter line in reverse than our Arvor...jack

I have taken all your advice and tips onboard. We tried running the warp..front roller to stern post without the turns around, this was how we did the damage on the front end..I think our problem is that we dont have any type of retaining device to keep the warp in place on the roller, it jumps out and has mangled the wings at either side of the roller [and they are 1/4 inch plate],we also have a rear handrail which encloses the whole rear corner,so the warp has to be run outside of this to avoid the rail staunchions taking the whole strain, and tearing out, there is a further side rail which really needs the warp to be run inside of it. In all a masterpiece of crap design by someone with a pencil and precious little experience of anchor recovery. There appears to be no way that the warp can remain with its main attatchment point as the front roller and anchor post, and yet still use the strong rear cleat as the main stress point when hauling out.Unless we carry on as we do...see diagram [i hope]...jack

Yes I am afraid we do a stern cleat pull-out. practicaly wrecked the front roller plates and adjacent cleates as well as removing the rubber bumber and its casing at the bow.on previous Drag out battles. .there is always a sharp knife adjacent to the stern cleat ready for use [we are aware there could be a problem ] However in rough seas and major tide,we are too chicken to put the ancher down ,other than from neccessity. We have a substantial boat, and if conditions are bad,we don't go out...Living "on the edge !!
