    Near Miss.

Out fishing Sunday.Good Tide ,Anchor down.Method in use, adapted Anka Yanka Recovery...Andy is on the engine,he has motored foreward enough to take the strain from the anchor rope,I hook the bouy on and put the line stop [triangle or other ] in place, feed out 20 foot of rope , and take a few turns around the main anchor post.Andy can now see the bouy and when we are ready he will veer to Port take up slack and move ahead.I keep watch at the front, he leaves cabin and secures the inboard end of the anchor rope to the large stern corner cleat. When he is back at the wheel he signals and I release the rope from the front post and throw it clear of the rails etc on the starboard side .I move back to watch the rope and signal when the bouy breaks out and follows behind.Textbook stuff. done it dozens of times now,no snatching just a steady pull. As he moves ahead I see that the rope is behind one of the starboard fenders hanging inboard ,I reach down to free it .when the rope tightens hard. My thumb somehow becomes trapped between the anchor and the fender ropes, and I am in real danger of either losing my thumb or being dragged overboard..Andy is watching the bouy and does not see what has happened. It hurts like hell and I can't free it left handed so I but it with my knee and the Fender mercifully flicks up and overboard and I am free. I sit on the deck feeling sick !! I didn't tear my thumb off or get dragged over, but it just shows how careful one must be,no matter how familier the task in hand...I am having a black thumb day today, but I've still got it, its amazing how attatched you can get to digits !! jack

  3. At one time Andy and I were in line for "bulk buying " discount at Quay West, but we have now improved our technique and touch wood havent lost one in the last 10 trips jack...p.s.see my near miss tale elsewhere.!!
  4. Hi Alun.I posted a reply earlier but it went the same way as my fish,so I will do another. Andy and I only got near two other boats yesterday,A larger craft which we assumed was a charter and a lone fisherman in what I took to be an Orkney 16 or smaller. Where you the solo-ist ?.If so I wish we had known . At that point we thought we were near the Clan McVey,having run inshore some 3 mls. from where we thought we were in the Xray area.Did you get your fish where you were at that time or elsewhere ?.[ you could e-mail me if you would rather not post it on site ]. We spent the entire day carrying out a census of the Poole Bay doggie population. We left that mark to move in to the ray mark, being the only place we have caught anything worthwhile, but we spent the rest of the day Tideless and Fishless. but in lovely warm sunshine...jack

    Fish Recipies

Every now and then, someone mentions or asks for a cooking recipe.Would it be worthwhile to have a fixed place where they could all be stored and referred to,as needed.some of course may well apply for example to any white fish, whilst others may be specific..Worth a go ??..member tested ones preferred, not just from cook-books....jack
  24. Thanks for all the useful tips and tackle help chaps,,yes Duncan the reel does have lugs.I dont have a harness as such, would it be a good idea to use 2 short straps to attatch the reel to my life jacket lifting rings ?. my main concern in all this is the fear I should be dragged overboard, perhaps I should get Andy to lash me to the large rear cleat...Still living in hope...jack
  25. The fist entrance in the wall, closest to the old torpedo testing station {closest to weymouth] Known as the chequer fort, probably still showing faint white cheque pattern.. on the inside, seaward corner, where you musn't tie up to the rings in the wall [lol] the bottom in the corner is big blocks,, Conger heaven !.Dont know how you cope with them in a kyak, but you were talking big baits.I have also had [years ago] some very big Bass on conger baits at this spot....good luck and best wishes in your endevours...take care..jack
