  3. Might just catch it heading out to the 303.
  4. Yep Charlie, I kept the old prop and a re-measure is precisely my next move. I will take the knackered one in to compare with the new one and take it from there. Cheers T
  5. The engine was dismantled, had corrective therapy and reassembled. Testing afterwards gave excellent results - high and very even compression. Very responsive throttle, revving out with no great effort with the old prop. Smokey when cold, as with these Volvo

  8. Interestingly I have the following calculation. Castle Marine (calc program) Equipment spec Heavy planing cruiser/workboat 1 engine 130 hp 3900 rpm 1.89 ratio leg boat weight 2.5 tons ........that's pessimistic waterline taken as full hull length 21' (makes no odds with planing type) Conclusion 130hp at shaft 2063 shaft RPM speed length ratio 3.06 Max speed 19.99 knots 22.99mph Calc slip ratio 0.17 pitch ratio 0.83 Recommended prop dia 17.19" pitch14.19 As this cannot be achieved Use 4 blade 15
  9. Duncan Spot on chap. Prop stamped 15 x 19 with smaller blades produced less revs and less speed. Back to Prop Revs for a proper calc. T
  10. Slam Dunc......... Must master that one.............. Cheers

  13. Started today with the view that such a big tide wouldn't fish well all day, so took the opportunity to have a change of prop to try and solve our lack of speed. Long story short as this is after all in catch reports.......... Second prop was naffer than the first.............. so all the way back to Quomps to haul out and change again........... Eventually we pottered out and ran west to find bait, which started wellish with 4 ASAP...............then 40 mins without a touch we desided to use the first ebb with a drift or two for billy bass. Skipper............( that's me today) got it wrong by 50 yards and we shallowed up to lose both baits to the bottom. Skipper............( that's me today) got it bang on the money this time and 200 yards in Jim hits a bass. While Jim plays with his fish I get hit twice but loose the bait on the second one. EEEEeeeeeeeeeeer pot buoy approaching rapidly....... panic yee not cos the bass is safely in the net Oh ballcocks..................no bait left. Long story shorter, we failed to find further bait before second slack and had to head off toward home. Conclusion. Non fishing day turned into fishing..........result! Prop trial took us close to a bassy bit..........sounds interesting Found a few baits............. looking good Four minutes over the strike zone = 5lb 5oz bass = result Not a big day but works for me on percentages. Photo in my album BTW well off the mark!!

    Towing Limits

Towing large trailers is a bit of a broad subject because of the huge variations in format, but for what it's worth, having towed a 3 ton + trailer over 50K in the last few years, here goes. Check vehicle 'max tow' in the manual. (Landy 110 HD /HC = 3500kg or 4500kg with linked brakes) Also check the 'total train weight' is not exceeded. Use the advised 'nose weight' and do not exceed the max, check this regularly if load or load distribution might change between journeys. Small cars are usually 50-75kg very large cars to 3+ tons might be 100-150kg. Correct tyre pressures on the tractor vehicle and the trailer are crutial. Keep the highest ratio of towing vehicle weight to that of the trailer. Keep the lowest centre of gravity. Ensure your tractor vehicle & trailer axis are level. Consider axle weights on the towing vehicle with trailer coupled ie including the trailers nose weight. Returning to the 85% rule and this is an interesting one. Whilst still being a good upper benchmark as used by the highway ploice advisory, you may still find the safety threshold lower and very vehicle specific. The higher you go the more likely that the tail will wag the dog. This is much worse in vehicles with soft suspension and poor anti-roll. I have towed much more than 85%, safely and legally, but under controlled load conditions with a vehicle I have rigged for towing and load carrying specifically. Large boats can be a pig to tow with even the best tractor, brought a three ton load from Harwich..........once Sorry if this is scetchy and off the top of my noodle.............. I have the book on towing law if anyone would like a read.
