Alfie & I were invited out as crew by Neal. First plan was flounders in the harbour but the decision was made to test the conditions outside. We headed out around 9am and with a following wind had no problem making a mark several miles south of Old Harry. When we stopped to anchor however it was a different story with a noticeable swell and choppy sea making conditions dooable in Neal's stable Arvor but impossible for smaller boats. Big baits went down to be immediately targeted by dogfish, but after a little while Alfie snagged a bigger 'doggy' and landed a beautifully marked bull huss. Was Neal chuffed or what..... A little later Alfie landed a strap which made a mess of Neals braid but not to be put off Neal had a 2lb 3oz pout. The occasional dog then showed up until the tide started to ease and I had a good bite and an interesting tussle with what at first we thought was a tope, but was in fact a starry smoothhound of just ober 9lb. A more serious enquiry led to a more determined tug of war with a good conger of over 25lb before my bait was selected by the target species, a fit looking cod of 12lb 8oz. We presevered for another half hour but couldn't find another so pulled the anchor and tied up at Cobbs just after 5pm. Thanks Neal for another good day afloat.

Club members who don't have individual membership of Angling Trust may be interested in this - Tuesday 22nd October 2013 Please forward this news to all of your club's members: Join the Angling Trust as an Individual Member for Just £2.50 a Month Angling Trust Introduce New £2.50 Subscription Option Please forward this email to Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club's members to encourage them to join online as individual members at www.anglingtrust.net/join or by calling the Membership Team on 01568 620 447. We've responded to feedback from anglers by introducing a new monthly subscription option. Individual members can now spread the cost of Angling Trust membership over 12 months by paying just £2.50 a month with Direct Debit. As the nominated Primary Contact for your club we are asking you to please pass on this news to your club’s members by forwarding them this email. The more members of our affiliated clubs that join us as Angling Trust individual members the more political clout and resources we will have to run campaigns and take action on issues like poaching, pollution, commercial over-fishing at sea and predation. For £2.50 (...yes that's less than the price of a pint of beer!) each month all anglers will now know they are doing the right thing and supporting their sport's representative organisation, and the work of Fish Legal, in the same way that birdwatchers join the RSPB or shooters join BASC. What's more, individual members get great benefits like public liability insurance worth £14.99, two magazines a year, monthly e-news and up to 20% off fishing permits, tackle and books. This new monthly payment option will make it easier for those who prefer to pay for individual membership of the Angling Trust in instalments rather than in a single £25 lump sum. To set up a £2.50 Direct Debit payment your club’s members just need to go to www.anglingtrust.net/join or call 0844 77 00 616 (Option 1). For those who prefer to pay in one single payment there's still a one-off £25 option for adult members instead. The total of £30 for 12 X £2.50 monthly instalments reflects the administrative fees we have to pay for taking 12 Direct Debit payments. Sent to relevant councillors and the Mayor To Councillors Jane Hall, John Birtwistle, Dominic Lonsdale, Richard Kosior and Colin Huckle of Weymouth & Portland Borough Council 20 October 2013 re – Weymouth Angling Club I am writing to you on behalf of the committee and membership of Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club showing our support for Billy Short, Chairman of Weymouth Angling Club, and his members, and asking that you reconsider your proposal not to renew the lease on his club's premises. Weymouth is the largest port in the country providing vessels that are constantly used by recreational sea anglers from across the country and abroad. It attracts large numbers of anglers, fishing festivals & competitions bringing in large amounts of money to the local economy. Weymouth Angling Club - with its membership of more than 400 anglers as well as having a thriving junior membership - is a cornerstone of the port and part of the very fabric of the town. There is no doubt that sea anglers across the country will be dismayed that the Borough Council propose to evict this historic and thriving club for the sake of a few more parking spaces and additional revenue. This decision appears to be a very short sighted and blinkered view of what this club means to the innumerable anglers and friends who continue to use the facilities it offers. Please, please reconsider this decision. Sincerely Stuart Cooper Club Secretary Poole Bay Small Boat Angling Club.
