Just seen this interesting thread A few of us have been trying for a few years to get into Flounder comps on Kayaks all over the country, but certain rules have always hit us back. When I go out fishing with a buddy(pairs) we tend to fish about 30 feet apart and are on a quick release system to our anchor which is buoyed off,so if the worse comes to the worse we leave our anchor and retrieve later. We find any closer than 30 feet and our rigs start getting caught in each others anchor warps when the wind/tide starts moving us. At that distance we can also Photograph each others catches Some people have said about tandem fishing kayaks only to enter competitions.I have tried a tandem and in my eyes they are more dangerous than a single one.If one person suddenly moves it catches the second person out and that person could panic and try to steady the craft by tipping the other way.Resulting in both people in the water. So personally I think the way to go would be a short distance apart for competitions In the harbor. In the open sea a little bit more distance is needed to allow for the swell and current. Safety is the first thing on our list and we take that very seriously.Nearly all of us Carry VHF Radio's,flares(inshore and smoke)GPS,Compass,First aid kits,Mobile phones for back up and lots more. You will find that most serious kayak anglers don't go out to sea in wind more than a force 4,we take shelter in the harbor and find a nice quiet bay to fish in. I have been a member of this great forum for about 4 years now. I think I will go the whole way and join the club seeing as I am local to Poole and have met a few of you out on the water over the years.

Finished work at 2am Saturday morning and in bed by 2.30am only to be woken by my alarm at 5.30am Got my food together and set off for the long Journey(All 5 miles of it) to Southbourne beach. Met Mark (Coombsyeone) at about 7am and made our way to the beach. Looks like the Bass and Mackerel had been busy, there were loads of small fish washed up on the beach.Chased in by the predators. At Southbourne beach there is usually a fair bit of surf even on the calmest of days, but yesterday was different. It was like being in the Med.Calm seas and sunshine. We had a nice slow paddle to Southbourne rough about 3 miles out Trolling out feathers behind us. Managed a few Mackerel on the way out, which were used as bait. There wasn't too much boat traffic that far out.Just the odd potting boat which thought they were mobile disco units >.We could here the music from their radios way before we could see them. We managed to catch Mackerel,Bream,Dogfish,Gurnard, and mark also had a small Starry smooth hound. Caught the bream on Hokai's baited with the small fish we found on the beach. A few pics of the area. Theres land there somewhere Mark with the Isle of Wight in the background Bringing in another Doggy Looking back towards Southbourne beach Bournemouth beach Headed back in at about 1pm where we met Steve,(Mullet Man).Mark had to go back and do some D I Y But myself and Steve decided to try for another hour.Headed over to the Double Dyke's section and fished round the pipe outlet.Loads of small bream and More Mackerel. There were big shoals of Mackerel not too far off the beach. Headed back in at about 3pm.Whilst we were paddling in I said to Steve...."I bet Rich(luckyRich) will be on the beach with his camera" As we got in close to shore I could see someone waving...Yes it was Rich ;D ;D ;D ;D.It was good to see you again mate. Excellent day out and with good company and decent weather for once. Roll on next weekend

Nice trip out James I just love paddling round that part of the coast.I never seem to get much fishing in when I go there though, too much time spent looking rond the rocks

5 of us decided to have a go for the Bream at Poole patch yesterday. The weather forecast wasn't looking too good, with Strong Northerly winds predicted for later in the morning. So a last minute change of plan was made to fish Durley Rock which is only a short distance from shore and sheltered by the cliff. I got to the launch car park at about 6.15am,the next one to turn up was Lucky Rich who had just come down to take some photo's and meet up with the lads (I will let Rich post his photo's later ;D ) Shortly after Mark(Coombsyeone),Steve(Maver),Andy(Shnoop) and Milo turned up.We tackled up and made our way down the beach for a very small surf launch,(or so they though ;D.....Lucky Rich's photo's will reveal all ) . Got talking to a guy that had been netting,he said there were lots of Mackerel about and pointed us in the right direction for the bream. Got out to the mark and a few buoyed off to pot markers and the rest anchored up.I think Milo was first in with a string of Mackerel, then came a shout from Mark that he had a bream. I think Mark had at least 12 Bream whilst the rest of us hadn't had much at all. After about an hour the rest of us decided to have a little move around.I went over towards Mark who had been having non stop action and anchored about 2 feet from him ;D,Maver and Shnoop moved onto different pot buoys. After 15 minutes I still hadn't had a bite and Mark was still catching,he was getting bites as soon as his lead hit the bottom He was using the same set up and bait as me so thought I would try something .I released from my anchor buoy and paddled across to Mark. Then tied up to his front carry handle ;D ;D ;D .....Droped my bait down and BANG went the rod, straight into a small bream That saved the blank. Then for the next hour it was non stop action with some nice size bream coming in. Late morning we saw 3 more kayakers in the distance heading our way.I could make out the first Kayak,it was a dark red flame Scupper pro.But I couldn't make out who it was, then they got closer and saw it was Lozz, then could make out a orange Hat ,Yep Richi ;D but couldn't make out who was on a yellow kayak. It turned out to be Tratty. They had come down to have a go on Poole patch but decided to fish near us as we were catching. They all buoyed up and Tratty started to catch as he was closest to myself and Mark .Lozz and Richi wasn't having much luck so Lozz came over and anchored up close by and Richi did his usual thing when he got bored. He decided to paddle out to Poole patch. We saw him get to all the charter boats in the distance but keep on going ;D ;D,think he must have gone to the outer patch ;D Here are some picks of the lads anchored close to us and Tratty landing a bream/ Mark and Andy decided to up anchor and go for a paddle (Troll some feathers) for the Mackerel whilst the rest of us carried on Bream fishing. Decided to call it a day about lunch time as I had enough bream for the BBQ and it had gone a bit quiet,So Mark,Shnoop and myself went in leaving Lozz and Tratty on the bream mark and Richi somewhere over the horizon ;D ;D. We had left our cars at the top of the West cliff and planned to bring the cars down to the car park to load up.But it was packed with holiday makers. So it was a long haul up hill with the kayaks Really enjoyed the day and was nice to meet Andy and Milo for the first time. Thanks to Steve and Andy for the Mackerel.Just wanted a couple to try out my smoker Finally my catch for the BBQ (4) Returned about 15 to fight another day

Thats us I am the one at the back.Usually I am on a single Sit on Top Kayak. But we were testing out the Cabo(tandem). It wasnt too cold out there. We had dry suits and plenty of warm clothing underneath. We fished from about 9am untill 11.55am for flounders, not so much as a bite. Then moved to the deeper water marks for Herring.Fished the first 20 minutes or so of the Ebb,saw one big shoal show up on the Fishfinder infront of the castle in about 42' of water. But didnt catch any. It was nice to be out. AHoy...were you the lone angler in the boat fishing for Herring or the boat that went past us on their way back in from the bay?

What a lovelly cod to catch.Well done We heard the news this morning on the radio as we were fishing off our Kayaks in the harbour

Castaways Flounder(Boat)comp on Sunday 18th of January.Poole Harbour. Thats all I know at the present time. Tim(Castaways) should be printing off details as soon as he finds a place for the weigh in.I am told it used to be the Mariner club, but its closed,so he is looking for a new location.
-
Thanks for the info Tom That was very helpful. Will let you know how we get on.Not too worried if we dont catch as it is really a trial day on my mates Tandem Cabo Kayak.Want to try it out before the boat Flounder match on the 18th of Jan. The only way we could enter on a kayak was to use a Tandem as a boat has to have a minimum of 2 people. Many Thanks Mark

Hello everybody, happy New Year to you all. I wondered if anybody could please help,I am after a bit of advice. This Sunday I am going fishing in my Kayak around Poole harbour for Flounders, but looking at reports and the tides it doesn't look like it will be very productive. So thought I would take some small feathers or Hoki's with me just incase the fishing was slow and have a go for Herring. I have never caught a Herring but have a rough idea where they are(or should be) near Brownsea castle. Could anybody please tell me if that is a good place and which lures(Feathers)would be best?.The Hoki's I have in my tackle bag have size 4 hooks on.Or are there any special sort of feather rig I should use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Mark(Zzippy)

Hiya Tom. I read on Anglers afloat you were after an honest opinion of the wavewalker. I looked into the wavewalker about 1 year ago,In my honest opinion it would be suited to Lakes and harbours where you dont have to paddle too far.I know on the website it shows people playing in the surf and going through waves, thats ok for a short time and for people that want to have fun.But there are sit on top kayaks that do exactly that and probably cheaper too. I wouldn't like to paddle long distances in it for the following reasons. 1...The paddle is too long and would soon wear you out 2...The Boat is too high out of the water and would catch the wind making it hard to steer. 3...If you capsized at sea,I think it would be hard to get back in and to drain the water out. There are probably alot of other points but someone with alot more experience would need to answer that. On Anglers net there are alot of people that would probably give more details. I started off with a Ocean Kayak caper just over 3 years ago,but that was hard work doing long distances because off its length and width. So I went to a Prowler15 which was narrower and longer. But that had its bad points. I know have the Scupper Pro which is 14.5 foot long and only 26" across. Its made for long distances and touring. Its excellent at cutting through chop.I have done trips to the Needles,Southbourne Rough and Christchurch ledge.I dont think I would paddle a Wave walker out to those marks. I dont honestly think there is a market for them in this country.Well not for fishing from. But they would probably be ok as a hire product for the tourists to use on the beach in the summer. That is just my honest opinion.I will probably get slatted by the sellers of Wavewalker, but Hey ho,I say what I think. I hope that has helped a bit Tom All the best. Zzippy

Thats a nice squid there mate. Specimen and I had fun fishing for them on our Kayaks over the Hood on Bonfire night.Managed some about half the size of yours.I am glad we had Drysuits on that night. We got a bit wet from the spray they shot at us I ate mine the following day,cut into strips lightly coated in seasoned flour and Deep fried for 3 minutes. See if I can get out again soon and stock the freezer up Zzippy

I am not sure where xray is...But Speciman was at Hurst Castle/Needles area Today,And Richi was off of Heingusbury Head or Xchurch ledge. Richi has an Orange/Flame Kayak. And Speciman has a yellow one.May have been one of them you saw today.

Hiya Maverick.Yes it was a bit Vicious and strong I was trying my hardest to keep his head away from my fingers.lol Paul D/Gaffa.The Camera that speciman uses is water proof down to 5 meters I think.I know he has taken underwater shots with it in the past. I think our next trip will be in Poole Harbour later on in the week.Might try for some Flatties at Holton Heath Or Rockly(Weather permitting) If not,it might be a trip on the Solent to see if Any early codling have made an appearance. If I am not mistaken.I think the plaice was caught last time they did beach restorations, and pumping sand on to the beaches as they are doing at the moment. The record might be broken again this year as the work is going on untill April. Just the right time for plaice from our beaches Zzippy

Thanks to everyone for the tips.We had a really nice day.Shame about the lost anchors though Its just taken me till now to recover from the long paddle.I was going to write a report but see that Speciman has beaten me to it.(Thanks Simon) Its a place we will be trying again though. Many thanks. Zzippy

Thanks for that Rich We read about the numbers on the wall, but didnt know about the dive floats.I am going to have to look up Red band fish now on the internet I have never heard of that species. I think I will spend most of my time just searching on the fishfinder to see what the sea bed is like round certain areas. We were a bit stuck on where to fish seeing as 12mph are forecasted. But we should be sheltered from Portland seeing as its meant to be SW winds. But we are determined to get out as its been a while since our last trip, and I havnt had chance to burn off the Xmas dinner yet.lol Manny thanks. Hiya all. I was just wondering if anybody has fished inside the Portland Breakwater at all? On Thursday Speciman and I want to get out and do a bit of fishing(from the Kayaks),but looking at the wind strength we are going to be restricted on where we can go. We have decided to try inside the Breakwater.According to some maps I have looked at there are about 17 wrecks to try.We havnt any gps points but should be able to find them with use of the map and Fishfinder. The depth varies from 10 meteres to about 20 meteres in places. Has anybody ever fished inside the breakwater?and if so have you any usefull tips at all please? Many thanks. Zzippy

Thanks for the info Mike We plan to troll some lures along.I excpect we will be out there all day,Weather permitting. I was Hoping to have my Fish finder/gps through this week. But it still hasnt arrived from the states yet But we will still have a go.If the weather looks bad we will head up to Holton heath and see if there are any early flounders to be caught. Thanks alot Zzippy

Or even better.Would anybody have a gps cordinate for the Milkmaid bank please If you dont want to post it on the forum you could always message myself or Speciman with it. Thanks Zzippy
-
Thanks for the advice guys We will try lures,Feathers Plugs and popers and see what happens. We will also give it a go with worm for the Plaice just off the training bank then. How far out is the Milkmaid bank.Is it Paddling distance?and are the currents very strong there?.We have chosen Wed or Thursday because we are on neaps and thought the current might be ok for us. Will write a report once we have done the trip.Even if we blank Many thanks. Zzippy
