No, the side scan didn't seem to show fish, just structure and bottom detail, however, the conventional sonar display on the unit does. Perfect tool for the wreck divers as it would save a lot of time getting orientated before going in the water. Gordon H

It was great to see the Hummingbird Side Scan actually working on board a boat at sea. The unit fitted to the demonstration boat was a top of the range model which had a very good screen size enabling multi-screen views of chart plotter and sonar image. I bought a new Optimax 115 for my Raider last year and its brilliant, nothing like the 2 stokes of old. At 18 knots cruise it burns 0.7ltr/mile, so last Saturday a launch at Wick out to the end of Christchurch Ledge and back used 7ltrs exactly. I went back to 2 stroke after lots of corrosion problems with a 4 stroke and the amount of oil used is tiny with mixture ratios of up to 200:1. Gordon H

Hi Mike, Yes, big thanks for that. I've just put the winch post back back on and it looks good as new, but won't bother going now as its too late for me. I like to at the slipway by 0800 latest, to avoid the crowds and get free launch and park, especially on a bank holiday. If I went now it would be manic at either Christchurch or Baiter with the Birmingham Navy up to their antics. As the weather window is looking favourable for next weeks Alderney trip I'm going to potter in the workshop today sorting out my rigs and tackle ready to go. We're all meeting at the Bakers Arms tonight for a pre trip get together to sort things out with a bit of pre trip planning and drinking. Graham, I'm looking for crew this coming weekend, so if you want to know what a Raider 18 Wheelhouse is like PM me. The Raider 18 and Warrior 165 are both excellent boats but perform very differently on the water, so I would advise trying to get a trip out in both and see which suits you best before you decide. I've just had both my engines serviced this week and decided tonight it was time to look at the trailer as well. I used to overhaul the wheel bearings and brakes once a month, but since fitting a hub flush kit this has extended to every six months. Having removed the drums I was amazed to find everything absolutely in perfect working order with virtually no corrosion and only some emulsification of the grease. I'll take some photos tomorrow and post them to show the results before I strip down, clean & re-grease everything. I think the cost of the kit was around

Rob, The answer is go for the biggest motor you can fit/afford, but to give you an idea my Raider 18 has a 6hp auxiliary and it will get me home at 4 knots using 2/3 throttle and will just make 6 knots flat out. Also quite handy for trolling lures and controlling the helm from the back of the boat at low fuel cost. Gordon H
