A good find Paul, however it's nothing new is it?? Why does it take a band of white collars years to pen a report they were warned about a decade ago at least? It doesnt take a Rocket Scientist to see they dissapearing banks, reefs or other fish holding strata destroyed by increased inshore trawling does it? Perhaps with the new branch to our NFSA we can finally demand more action to save our seas. Rich

The Skerries mark is fished out of sight by hundreds of boats, and this still seems to produce fish every year. Last time I fished it, with Lloyd Saunders, we all had at least two Plaice each, and a local friend down there tells me it still fishes well. Hopefully, sense will prevail, and spawners will be returned, with only one or two fish taken for the table. It would be interesting to approach Southampton University with a view of getting hold of average spawning ages/sizes for species around our coastline. I may E-mail them. Rich

Zed...welcome aboard, I myself, like you, needed knowledge about boating, although I'm an accomplished boat angler. I joined the club with a view to gaining knowledge before taking the plunge. Please join the club, I can assure you you wont regret it, I know from a non boat owners point of view you, that you will be made to feel at home. You will have to take our tongue in cheek comments though!!!! welcome............Rich

Paul, I tried for Plaice last friday, and managed to bag two. My tactic was to don my coat, and nip down to the Chippy, I handed over a tenner and bagged two fillets. I also managed a large bag of chips, and had change!!! I have alterred a couple of those spreaders that were sold at the club meeting a few months ago, snipped off the end rig link clips, and filled each arm of the spreader with Lumo beads, then replaced the link clip, and re crimped the wire, and covered with my own shrink tube. Then short droppers filled with beads can be hung from each clip, making a rig similar to the "Ventnor" style rig we use off......wait for it......Ventnor! These rigs outfished any other type of rig on four trips, the same baits being used on all rigs. I'm hoping to get out on thursday, so will PM with results. The Plaice are showing already down West. Kam............interesting thread, in the goody bag from last years YYs was a blue powder coated 8oz sinker, although this has sat in my weight tub untill now! Glen Milligan, a seasoned match angler, advocates the trial of coloured leads in an article he has penned in this months BFM. Having fished with Glen on private Police Charters, and in international competition, his inventive use of different terminal tackle has taught me not to poo-poo anything. I have some powder coat from Gerrys, and have used it on lead heads, for jelly's and shads, but will now be flaming up the torch to try out different colours for this years matches, and see how I fare. I'm sure that current match rules do not deny the use of coloured leads, so even 1oz 2oz and 3oz Bullets can be coloured to act as attractors. It's dead easy to apply, all you do is fire up a blow torch, hold the lead with long nosed grippers, heat it then roll it into the powder coat. ease the lead around the torch, to even out the coat, then do this again untill the whole of the lead is covered. The proffesional finish is all in even heat application. Colours I have are red, white, yellow, orange and black. It's dead easy to apply, and makes a good job on home made leads. I have also thought of dipping each size of weight into a different colour, so the bottom of the leads will show at a glance whether it's a 12oz, 1lb, 1lb 1/2 etc. Rich

Paul, do we know how many of these fatalities are diving acidents?? I seem to recall that diving accidents were well up on previous years last year. Rich

Kam, if you are holding the warp alongside to lift the trail out of the water during the lift, the holder can also "feel" the bouy reach the end of the rope, hit the chain coupling, then rub along the chain till it comes to rest against the anchor. Then a signal to the skipper informs him the anchor is up. Be mindfull not to grip the warp as if your life depends on it, should there be a snag you may end up in the drink!! Rich

Alun, being a great lover of skate/ray, I'm not squeemish re the stories of odour. I usually take the frame off, remove the "Knob", the large muscle under/behind the jaws.......(is this larger in females????!!!!!!! ), the remove the skin in Duncans method, 2" strips, pullung down towards the wing tips. Then this always goes into the feezer for a few weeks. This usually does it for me, BUT, I've never tried it poached gently.........I will have a crack at this recipe, it sounds georgeous!!! Rich

Adam, it may well be that the gulfstream split at lands end, drifts so far along our southerly coast, but the strong tides closer to the isle of wight dissipate it, therefore, the water is just that little bit warmer, closer to weymouth. This would follow, that with current sea temps. rising, different, more exotic species, are starting to show closer to home, for example, the Tuna that was netted recently, also, Trigger fish are slightly more abundant in our location, not abundant enough, however, for me to catch one!!
