  1. 'ello terry...welcome to the madhouse, enjoy the forum, and the club in general. Rich
  2. Kam, I believe that you are also based around southampton. I have a vacuum packer, so its easy for me to put down fresh cuttle. Are you able to get hold of a date that your supplier will visit next, as I'll grab a load and whack them down. I have been in touch qitj Billingsgate, and that price is not too bad, considering the amount of time and diesel spent in transit between here and the East end. Coddy, if it helps, i used cuttle off the back of the island on my last foray, before the op, and didnt get a sniff! The only cod fell to a slip of macky on baited feather at slack......she went 27 3/4 lb!!! Tight lines, see you guys at the desk at wekend. Rich
  3. Kam, my reason for joining the club was to further knowledge of small boats, not just the build, but handling and fishing techniques, something which has expanded over the ten months Ive been a member. As responsible adults, we should take charge of our own, and passengers safety whilst at sea. There are few statutes that apply to boating, most rules are enforced through the local harbour commissions. with the increase of recorded incidents by HM CG and the Police service, I believe that it wont be too long before legislation deems that all skippers are competant, as are crew. Why draw the line at charter vessels? With the advent of cheaper faster, better equipped craft, the desire for the small boat owner is to travel farther afield, increasing the elemant of risk, not just to the crew of the boat, but the rescue services who may become involved should an incident occur. Points have been raised in the forum, regarding teach ins for boating knots etc, which I see as a superb idea, with so many memebers having a wealth of knowledge in many fields, this will only enhance both the club in general, and our reputation amongst the boat angling fraternity. I see us moving in the right direction volluntarily, not enforced by stautes, which is great. Rich
  4. Best of luck with the dreaded move dave...Will see you next week(??) at the comp? Well, someones going to have to lift Charlies nippers Conger onto the scales! Rich
  5. Fair comments Mikey, I need to brush up, erm...can one tie a knot one handed, says the cripple from southampton!!!!! Rich
  6. Paul...my thoughts on this one were this......You dont see too many fillets floating across the sea bed, but dead launce in that area must abound, hence my reason for putting the whole thing on as oppossed to a fillet, that time it worked......but who didnt catch a flattie???? Moi!!!! I reckon its horses for courses paul, and i prefer using whole sandeels/launce for bass skate and rays, although my fave ray bait is mackeral fillet halved, purely as all of my bigger skate in Poole bay area have fallen to this. South of the needles, Atherfield area, my choice is Sandeel......purely as Ive caught more big rays on that bait. Results tend to sway me, although fishing the YYS, I learned that no bites.......change baits/tactics, and that works. I learn each time I fish, and after 35 years behind a rod but or net handle...its great to still learn, but my most satisfying thoughts from this year are not my PB bass, PB pollack, PB ling, PB small eyed, PB Black bream, PB Blonde, its the fact that joining this club has brought me not just better fish......but new friends, and so much fresh knowledge, whuich in this field, I thirst for!! Regards to all, Rich

    Up tiding

Why choose uptiding Kam? The trace length depends entirely on weight of bait...strength of tide, and bottom make up. Needles area, I have heard of and caught, far more cod downtiding, than uptiding. Interesting to hear other views on this. Rich
  8. Billy....wel done mate, sorry I couldnt fish, I still have work to troll through before the op this saturday...its a nightmare!! I'd like to nip out with you some time, I cant really fish, but would enjoy a day out, as the prospect of three months not working is already killing me...let alone three months not fishing!!!! Tight lines...be cautious of the little billyboy...hes gonna steal ya thunder!!!! Rich

    Stop Knot

Bob..............these animations are excellent, absolutely first class, as James has already stated, far easier to understand than static pics or photographs. Hopefully, with stuff like this on site...our regs will grow!!!! Well done Rich
  16. Alun, I've had Huss from the shore to 16 1/2lb, but thats from marks down the west country, when i fished in the Plymouth shore league. As a child, we were brought up on fish and game, anything Dad could get his hands on really, and Huss was, and is one of his and my faves, being sweeter than doggies. Abhored, today I know, with the conservation aspect of Sea fishing, especially in this club, I have eaten spurdog, huss, doggies, tope...all of which I thouroughly enjoy, my favorite fish being skate...I know...heathen, but tastes are personal, as are conservation choices. In my case, not every skate is taken for the table, and as far as Tope are concerned, I havent eaten one since I was a small child. Its funny, as we generally catch far more tope skate bass etc than cod, and we knock the old cod on the head without a thought, where...generally the other species are returned. I know the feeling I had on returning my near 13lb bass to see her swim away, but any fish I do take are always eaten. So long as waste isnt the order of the day, fish for the table is ok in my book.. Tight lines...............Rich
  17. Paul, Martin.....is there form available to report ordinary catches in to charlie for the book?? Not that I catch much!!!!! Just for info.... Ta muchly....Rich
  18. Dave.............that strains me at the best of times.....unless its forking out for fishing tackle, trips aboard, or charters to Alderney!!!! Rich
  19. As I have vollunteered to help steward............Martin, does stewarding mean holding meanies like threshers???? Rich
  20. Well done matey...sorry i couldnt join u......at least a beast!!!!!!! Rich
  21. Guys, Ive had notice from the good old NHS that my Carpal Tunnel Release operation is going ahead on Saturday 20th November. So I'm out of action for about 10 weeks from that date, as they will do the second hand 6 weeks after the first op. Ive no idea how long it will be 'till I can grip again afterwards. So............unavaible for crewing, comping, or indeed, any two handed activity. I'll be able to cope with stewarding on the open day though, wouldnt miss the weigh in for love nor money. Tight lines chaps, chappesses and chaplets!!!!! Rich
  22. Hiya Rose, welcome to the best club website the country has to offer, and indeed the Home of the Boat Fishing Monthly 04 Champ. Enjoy............. Rich
  23. Charlie, the son of another copper caught the cod.....he did very well to lift it on such light line i thought, just shows you what can be achieved if your gentle with your tackle.......ooooer missus!! We heard a Poole Bay boat talking of a Thresher coming up alongside a boat yesterday...did u hear about this??????? Rich.................
  24. alright u old shirtlifter......sorry James...I'd love to, but I really have to get some work done............tight lines matey Rich
  25. Hiya guys, sneaked out, again, yesterday, on our monthly charter with Due South, and had a few hours SW of the Needles. Tides were larger than sunday, but still smallish, and we managed a few good whiting. A change of mark, to south, made the difference......bagfulls of whiting to around 3lb, a pollack of about 4 lb, spotted ray, doggies...loads! pout, makeral, scad and a beautifull full bodied cod of almost 28lb. This fish took a tiny slice of macky on feathers left for whiting, on a carp rod, small baitruner loaded with 12lb mono...it took over half an hour to land, but well worth the effort. Skeggsy had another cod of about 25lb, i think, dont know to what bait, and he also had a pollack of 9lb first drop just outside the Needles, so I guess they are showing. I had a few whacks, and lost what i thought were whiting, then pulled up a squid of about 18inches...which was duly hooked up onto 10/0 grappling irons, and slung back down, alas, not a snifter on it!!!! A great day, we couldnt have wished for better seas, and hoping the weather stays good for the best tides of the year this coming weekend.....tight lines lads. Rich
