MONSTER COD IN NORWAY RAISES THE BAR 11:00 - 15 February 2006 If your ambition runs to being the European Record holder for the Atlantic cod you will have to seriously raise your sights. The latest edition of the European line class and all-tackle records reveal a monstrous specimen of 82lb 11oz taken off Norway, an area with a reputation for immense fish. It dwarfs the UK record of 58lb 6oz caught off Whitby in 1992. Dave Uren, who runs Warrior out of Plymouth found a wreck free of nets some way south east of the Eddystone and his anglers made the most of the opportunity. Steve Newton broke two of the City Engineers SAC boat records. He had an exceptional whiting of 4lb 6oz and a pollack of 20lb 12oz. This species was not plentiful but a dozen or so, all in double figures, came over the gunwales. Another plaice season is upon us and the first fish at the Skerries Banks are imminent. An ever-increasing number will arrive in the tide-swept area between Start Point and the Bell Buoy at the Banks northern end to provide steady sport for the next two months or so. Dinner plate-size fish are in the distant past but the average size of the many hundreds that will be taken from charter and privately owned boats will not be far off 2lb. Plaice fishing is a light tackle game and you need a 10ft double-handed spinning rod or a very light uptider that has a soft tip action or a 12lb class boat rod of not less than 7 ? ft. A small multiplier is loaded with mono no heavier than 10lb, or braid that has ultra-thin diameter for its breaking strain, lending itself perfectly as it allows less weight to be used. This is a huge asset in the fierce tides that sweep across the banks during the middle range and springs which heighten the flatties' inclination to feed. Keep the terminal trace featuring a length of up to 15 ft on the bottom and this is achieved by constantly allowing a foot or so of line to run off the reel. Simply using more lead to keep the rig close to the bottom is no answer as sensitivity is destroyed and bites are not easily detected. Brightly coloured beads are a main part of the flattie game and tiny spoons that flutter in the tide appeal to the inquisitive nature of the species. The trace is run off a plastic or wire boom, which also acts as the weight carrier, or you can use a ball lead that is cushioned against the trace swivel with a small bead. Most banks flatties are at the base of the dunes on the side sheltered from the tide but at the Start end there are deep pits where plaice congregate. The species takes a bait with a degree of caution and you need to feel the light "pluck" that signals initial interest. This is the moment to allow a couple of feet of line off the reel to take tension off the terminal rig. A few seconds later the fish will come a more determined attack but you must curb the desire to strike instantly. Count to three before smoothly lifting the rod, this being sufficient to set the hook. Banks plaice have a preference for peeler crab, soft crab, sandeel, worm, squid and cuttlefish and you can't do better than combine them in a cocktail. Make sure you have a very sharp knife to cut the squid into ultra clean-edged strips not less than 6in in length. You need sharp, long-shank fine wire hooks, usually size one to a maximum of 1/0. On the other side of Start Point is Lannacombe Bay, where there is also good plaice fishing and this area gives the better chance of a turbot while brill are possible. The South West region also has the benefit of the Shambles Banks off Portland Bill, noted for its very fierce tides. It generally yields heavier flatties than the Skerries but the number of fish of average size is not so great. The top specimen of 2005, taken by Wyvern Secretary Mike Spiller, was a beauty of 7lb 1 oz and several more in the 6lb class were reported during the season. Dartmouth and Weymouth are the principal ports for charter boat visits to these famous flattie areas. The British boat record for the species continues to be the outstanding fish of 10lb 3oz caught in 1974 at Longa Sound, Scotland, and the shore best is a fine 8lb 6oz set at Southbourne Beach, Bournemouth in 1989. Neither is likely to be beaten in this age of diminishing returns. The European boat record is 11lb exactly, set off Denmark in 1988 and the shore is the Bournemouth fish of 8lb 6oz. --------------------------------------------------- Time to get out there soon me thinks Coddy

Hi Mike I raised a similar thought with Martin a while ago and the plans on the new "sail bridge" area did include a new slip somewhere. There is quite a lot of info on the council's web site. The other main thing to think about is that 2012 Olyimpics will be at Weymouth and one has to ask what is Poole going to do to cash in on all the visitors and boats etc. ???? Like most councils they will say nothing & do nothing as it is too far away ........ yea right! If you want a hand or need another vote you have mine. Coddy

Sorry Jack but I had never caught a plaice or flounder until I joined the club. However I used to catch coddling but since being "down South" never ever got a sniff of one (as yet) Not got a bass, only schoolies, in fact when does a bass become a bass and not a schoolie? Not had a conger yet or pollock or ............... or ................... so I am just like you really It's good fun burning fuel trying though. Coddy

Hi Paul & all I too went out but not in club waters this time but from Eastney on a friends new Warrior 165 and another friends 150 for company. Headed off on a fairly flat sea south of the Nab to a hole 130ft+ deep. Tide was ebbing and I managed a LSD and a small thornback ray. Due to the strength of the tide we decided to move inshore a bit but we did not even get a nibble there but the tide had eased by now so we returned back to the deep hole. Had some more doggies, pout and the tiniest poor cod I have every seen. The afternoon was getting on and the sea was getting more lumpy so we headed in towards a wreck at Dean Tail, did some drifts there and managed some whiting and pollock. Not a great days fishing for fish sizes as they were all under sized but a great day to be out with good company and a change to be the crew instead of the skipper. Also nice not to have all the boat to clean down and sort out after returning home. Thought you might like to know what's going on the othe side of IOW. Coddy

Hi all. I have just been told about a web-site, that is trying to get as many people as it can to join as it can. The aim is once enough people have joined, to supply them with fuel card's, that will entitle them to between 5p and 10p per litre off fuel. but you need to register to be sent one. There is no cost involved and even if it does not get off the ground it has cost you nothing. They are expecting to send out the card's in April or May. with the cost of fuel affecting our sport as it is, every little help's. The web-site is Pipeline Coddy

Hi Charlie, If I had known it was today I would have poped round to watch. Looks great but the hard work and time is just starting, I am sure it will be great when all done. I will have to watch when you lift again ready for the final lift to take her down to the sea, the lonely sea and sky. Coddy

Hi Jack A "Dongle" is a plug in storage device which uses one of the USB ports to transfer data/pictures etc. Think of it as a new fangle floppy disk which is full of memory but no moving parts. You can use it to store data and pass on from PC to PC or just store. Coddy

Hi all On my last trip out I managed to damage the prop on my Mariner 60 four stroke going over the bar at Christchurch, Rich will recall it well. Anyway I thought I had just burred the leading edges but as it is the quiet season, so to speak for fish, I took the prop off and took it down to Propeller Revolutions at Cobbs Quay. Meet a nice guy there, not sure of his name but he had a quick look at it and sucked air through his teeth as most repair men do, all been trained that way aren't they Martin , and said hmmm "might need a recon prop sir". He then showed me how one of the blades had deformed and the others were not that good either and did I notice the vibrations? Errrr No! Anyway he is going to try to salvage it if not he does his own version of separate bush and prop so if it happens again you can get a new prop without an insert for about

Hi Charlie Well you have opened a can of worms here but for what's its worth here's my choice Reels - I use Penn 535 for uptiding as well as a Penn GTi310 Light stuff I do like cheap Shakespear Neptune reels, they may not look great after a couple of years but go on & on & on. Heavy stuff? Well I have a Penn GTi330 + some real heavy duty Penn 113 and an old but good Mitchell 604. Jus won my first Abu 7000 and as yet not got any line on it so unable to comment. As you can see I seem to like Penn reels, they have never let me down and easy to clean and strip when required. Rods - I have an old Penn Evolution uptider which I still like as well as a Abu Conolon uptider. Downtiders - Abu conolon 10 - 17lb, Red Wolf 12lb, DAM 30lb and a Ugly stick 50lb as yet never been tested. In the end whilst it is nice to have all the top of the range gear I do not think it will catch you more fish. It is down to personal feel/comfort, your budget and does it work when you want it too. If you want to spend serious money on gear I would suggest you try out someone else's gear to see if it suits you style of fishing. Good luck Coddy

One for the ladies One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his Sweatshirt.
