  1. Sue & I would like to wish all club and non-club members a Happy Christmas and a better year for fishing than 2012. May Santa bring you all some nice goodies and I hope you all enjoy the festive season. Have a great time. Dave & Sue (FPO)
  2. If you fancy a cheaper option go to the local scrapyard and remove one from a VW Sharan, Ford Galaxy or Seat Albrahama You might need a couple of bits but a lot cheaper than new! If you need a wiring/parts diagram let me know. Just a thought Dave
  3. I find it at the bottom of our drive, covered in plant pots ! You'll have to come out with me Dave. You can do a report yourself. You know I'm no good with words -- - - - well maybe cakes or lager Jim I would be more than happy to come out with you and play. Maybe you can show me some of your "secret" marks! Dave

Hi Derek I have a Quicksilver 12ltr tank you can have, there are no fuel lines I am afraid but it will get you out on the water for quite a while with your engine. I will bring it to the meeting Thursday. Dave
  8. As been suggested I think you will need to strip the carbs as 2-stroke can leave oil in the carb after the petrol has evaporated and block the jets. This is a common problem. Also worth checking to see if the choke works, most older Yamaha's have an electric choke via a solinoid so you should see that working. If you had a spark on one of the plugs I suspect the cut-out cord switch is ok. If you need any more info let me know as I have an electroniic manual on most Yamaha's. Is you engine pre-mix fuel or do you have oil injection system? I store 2-stroke in plastic tanks without a problem (so far) just need to watch out for the increase in pressure in the tank during sunny ( ) weather. Dave

    Anchoring

Use to happen to me on a smaller boat with a 5kg bruce-a-like Found that if I sharpened the blade of the anchor a bit it dug in a lot better. The edge does get rounded after time so a quick wizz with the angle grinder works wonders. Dave

    Nasty Smell

Hi all Last week-end I brought back some defrosted squid and cuttle to mash down for ground bait ready for next year. Problem is the bag leaked a bit of the jucies onto the back carpet in the car! What is the best stuff to clean the carpet and freshen it up with, as the FPO is complaining!!! Dave

  16. Paul Depends on the size of screen Most agree that anything smaller than 5" is too small and if you go split screen it's even worse. Get as bigest sized screen as you can afford. You will get many opinions of which make, some have had problems with Lowrence/Eagle after sales, others won't touch Garmin but they do give excellent after sales. Dave

  20. A long time ago I was taught you should never run an engine, petrol or diesel WOT without a load on it. A quick rev is ok but a sustained flat-out rev does not prove much in my opinion. Yes the engine might get to the revs but that does not mean it will rev the same when loaded. Injectors/carbs will not pass the same amount of fuel/air, the fuel pump is not passing the same amount of fuel, a turbo, if fitted, will not be pulling the right sort of vacuum again un-loaded. A lot depends on the design of the engine/electronics if any fitted. Running on the limiter is putting undue strain on many mechanical components within the engine. I do stress this is sustained running not just a quick rev of the engine, which as I have already mentioned does not prove anything except it can reach a certain rev range. Do not compare modern race engines against outboards and diesels, the build quality and specifications/tolerances are miles apart and design of the engine and components are completely different. As I say this is just my personal thoughts and opinion and I don't expect anyone to take any notice, however I would never by a boat, outboard or car where I know the owner revs the guts out of an engine like a boy racer! I know Nigel is more of an authority about engines than I so if he would like to add his thoughts I might be persuaded to have a change of thoughts. Dave
  21. Ouch!!! Would not suggest trying this option personaly Dave
  22. "Sole" distroying! Dave
  23. I have been on holiday in Brittany and seen some of those lighthouses from the shore. The tidal currents and standing waves can be very nasty. Some impressive photography in that clip, not the sort of day to go fishing in! Dave

    Boat Security

Hi Mark I use and have AGM batteries which would be ideal for your use, you can mount them at any angle even upside down without any leakage. They just need an occastional re-charge or use a small solar panel to top them up. If you want to try one out let me know and what sort of current draw you expect and I sort one out for you. Dave
  25. Hi Malcolm Which engine do you have in the boat? I can think of a few things to check depending on the model of engine it is. I think I would be contacting the MD of Mermaid asking why their mechanics think the engine needs a rebuild, having just been serviced by them, as surely this level of repair would have been picked up when the service/repair was being done and should have been reported at the time! Sounds like their engineers don't know much about their engines! I was on Kind of Magic following you when you left Cobbs Quay on the day of the open comp and apart from stopping near the end of the channel into Cobbs I don't recall seeing any nasty smoke or anything out of the ordinary. Dave
