  1. Seems others had problems in South Wales also COASTGUARD SEARCH FOR TWO BOATS LOST IN FOG Swansea Coastguard are warning members of the public to check weather reports and take appropriate equipment before setting out to sea after two vessels in two days got into difficulty in fog and had to call for help. The first incident happened at 4.25 yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) when people on board a 16ft angling boat contacted Swansea Coastguard to advise that they had run aground near Penarth due to low visibility. They were able to give an approximate position based on their GPS but were not entirely sure of their exact location and so Swansea Coastguard sent out Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team to find the stricken vessel. The Penarth RNLI inshore lifeboat was also sent out to search, but with visibility down to about 80ft at the time it was very difficult for resources to find her. At 6.00 pm both the Coastguard and the inshore Lifeboat located the vessel and it was decided that they would wait until high water to refloat the boat. At 9.00 pm the vessel refloated and safely returned to Cardiff Bay. The three people on board were wearing lifejackets but did not have a working radio. At 08.49 this morning people on board another angling vessel contacted Swansea Coastguard to advise that they had been out fishing and had got lost in the fog. They thought that they were somewhere near the mouth of the River Usk, near Newport. Again, they were calling on a mobile phone as they had no working radios on board, and the only information they had was that they were near a specific type of buoy that marks the end of a sewer pipe (outfall buoy). Using this information, and location information from their mobile phone, Swansea Coastguard again sent the Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team and RNLI lifeboat to search for the boat. Due to the low visibility it took the lifeboat two hours to search around every outfall buoy in the area and eventually locate the vessel, at which point they escorted them back to their moorings on the River Usk. Bernie Kemble, Watch Manager, Swansea Coastguard said: The break between Christmas and New Year might seem like an ideal time to take out a boat, but low visibility makes it extremely challenging to navigate a vessel safely or to give an accurate location if you get into difficulty. The people on board these vessels were lucky that they had sufficient mobile phone signal to call for help, as neither had working radios on board, and although the first vessel had flares it is unlikely they would have been seen in dense fog. If you are setting out to sea, regardless of the weather conditions, you should always ensure you have navigation equipment, flares, a working radio and enough lifejackets for everyone on board. Dave
  2. Hi Rob Many thanks All saved Dave
  3. I am begining to pull my hair out on this one and thought I would ask if anyone has any suggestions. I have a Yamaha C40 twin cylinder 2 stroke outboard attached to the back of the boat, thought I would check to se if it was charging the battery and it wasn't! So bought a replacement rectifier and fitted it still nothing! (bum) Checked the output from the lighting coil and I got a voltage (AC of course) off each lead but not very high at about 6 - 8 volts. Both rectifiers seem to test ok so can anyone suggest any other ideas? Dave

  8. The best thing for me was moving down to Dorset 6 years ago and joining PBSBAC and meeting and making many new friends. 2010 has not been the best year regarding fishing for me but to be invited out on many club members boats has been a real highlight and the friendships that have been shown has been very touching. To add to the thread, my 2011 resolution is to become more positive and catch some good fish. Have a great time Dave

    Short Love Story

A SHORT LOVE STORY A man and a woman who had never met before, but who were both married to other people, found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a trans-continental train. Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, they were both very tired and fell asleep quickly, he in the upper berth and she in the lower. At 1:00 AM, the man leaned down and gently woke the woman saying, .......... 'Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I'm awfully cold.' 'I have a better idea,' she replied 'Just for tonight,...... let's pretend that we're married.' 'Wow!...................... That's a great idea!', he exclaimed. 'Good,' she replied. .............'Get your own f**king blanket.' After a moment of silence, ......................he farted. The End

  12. I was invited out on Alans's (Fisheagle's) new boat today After getting things sorted out before leaving the marina we managed to pass under the bridge without needing to wait for the lift and headed South. As this was Alan's first trip out he was getting used the the feel and handling of a larger craft compared to his old Orkney. Anyway we found our desired spot and dropped the pick down and got the rods out hoping Mr Cod would come calling. Within mins the lines were twitching and up came an almost constant stream of whiting in various sizes fom small to nice 2.5lb+ versions. We also managed a few good sized pout but no doggies or cod. Many of the whiting went back to getting bigger and fight another day. A steady run back in at 3pm saw us back on the mooring in good time. Many thanks for the invite Alan and thanks for an enjoyable day. Maybe next time Mr Cod will come calling Dave
  13. Happy Birthday Neal Hope you manage a cod to celebrate your birthday Dave

  17. I too would like to add my thanks to all those who came and organised what could have been a super trip. It has been over 6 years since I caught a cod since moving down to Dorset and I thought I might have broken my duck yesterday but not to be. Maybe next time Thanks to Rob and his crew making suggestions and showing how they bait up plus the coffee and rolls and Dave in catching a nice Cod for his tea. Good company and a biit of a laugh dispite the conditions and again thanks to all. Dave

  20. I have to ask the question, how many people moor up in that particular area? Surely we as anglers, can not expect to have the whole sea area open to us in this day and age. We are quick to condem others that do damage to the seabed and enviroment yet when it is suggested that an area is closed to all for mooring we throw our hands up in horror! If you want to fish that area what is wrong with drifting? Is it an area of great fishing potential? It maybe an area where many of the boating fraternity meet up and enjoy the peace and tranqual of the area, but whenever I have visited it seems there are idiots charging around in small ribs and speedboats using toys or just being a pain in the arse and wanting to see how close they can come and produce a wake to rock your G&T off the table. I for one see no problem with it, of course the area may be increased sometime but that is another issue. If a group of boats wish to raft up, I am sure there is sufficient space to cope in the bay and should it become that crowded, do you really want to be there? Oh well of my soap box now Dave

  22. Hi all I found this article about how these lip grip weighing scales damage fish. Now I know it is from America but it does make you think Quote: Study Shows Lip-Gripping Devices (Boga Grips) Damaged 80% of Bonefish by Tom Chandler on August 12, 2008

  24. I don't expect this applies to many in the club but thought it might help others Dave Yamaha engine recall Yamaha Motor Corporation is recalling roughly 30,000 outboard engines due to safety concerns over faulty gear shifting. The recall affects all F225, LF225, F200 and LF200 4-stroke outboards for model years 2002 through 2004. Yamaha states excessive friction in the ball joints of the throttle link rods may prevent the throttle return springs from returning the throttle linkage all the way to the idle position. If that happens, the company says, the throttle may stay at a fast idle speed that could prevent the operator from shifting the remote control into neutral unless the engine is shut off. A December 30th recall letter from the company warns
