sTTu For spur of the moment baits Summertime - bassing using plugs, Pollack in autumn using hokkias over rocky ground, Dec/ January Herring in Poole Harbour....using tiny hokkais Frozen Sandeel - a few packs doesnt take up any space in the freezer Frozen Squid - use from when the mackerel dissappear to when they return - if you buy the small boxes, OK its more expensive, but again doesnt take up much space. Hurry up though and get out fishing soon - Feb/March are dire months. Paul

Rob Thanks - its one job I want to do - and my saltx arrived today, confirming what you say. I dont know why there might be a prob with circulating for longer, unless the water gets too warm and the salt x goes to goo. I've asked "jake" so shall post a response if I find anything. Regards Paul

Have you all seen metcheck predictions for comp on sunday ?? next Thurs looks better than Monday, but only a small window? Paul

Rob Really great article and well done - all us Yam owners are having sleepless nights now! I have the same problem, as my boat is always on the mooring. I have been using the flush connection joined up to my deckwash pump when I return the boat to the mooring, having filled up 30litres or so of fresh water in the marina. I suppose its better than nothing, but have often wondered about using salt-x soak/ flush once in a while. | I take the boat out on its trailer every 6-8 weeks for a scrub/ de-weed, so could just make up some solution in a drum and put the leg of the outboard into this ? What was your comment about only running the engine for a few seconds? Paul
-
Hi Charlie Had an extenal look at her sitting in the marina on Sunday! I expect you wouldnt have wanted to leave her tugging away on the mooring with all that wind forecast... Not a good day to be out boating, so your timing was spot on for the Friday for the sea trials, and the best possible day for trying her out. Well Done Paul
-
Mike, Never mind about the Cod, mid november for bass has got to be a good sign!! Paul
-
Charlie Are you taking any rods with you on Friday????? Go on..... you know you want to......... Paul
-
Nice one Alun - well done! I thought of you warming your engine up in the icey cold mudeford water, as I was scraping a hard frost off the car windscreen at 0600 this morning! Pity you lost that bass, but a nice consolation prize of a brace of Cod! Paul

Charlie, I am like most others looking at that dash layout and finish - absolutely amazed!! I dont think you will regret a moment wasted on all the 'filling and fairing' indoors, as you would never justify doing it after you had launched her. Also if you had left any compromises, you would be constantly reminded of them!! I'm sure you will be rightly proud of her, the whole boat looks fantastic. Hope you christen both gunnels with plenty of winter Cod and Whiting. Regards Paul

Jack, You should check out lake road up at hamworthy if you have something smaller than a warrior or the like, the Parking is free, and you can drive onto the beach to connect the trailer! There's a steel gate and cross bar to deter the larger boats. Paul

Just a footnote....might be of interest My last towbar was fitted to a company passat, and when I changed it, the towbar simply unbolted from the pre-designed lugs. OK, so I had to take the rear bumper and trim off... but I wasnt very impressed with how the electris had been patched into the loom using scotchlocks. whole job took less than an hour even with my primitive tools. I'd be surprised if any modern car (european designed) didnt have the fixings somewhere under the car. So if you see a second hand one, dont be afraid to buy it.. Paul

Mike Hmm - why can't you take the memory stick out? I've been quite dismayed with how fragile these things are after we 'dropped' ours on a carpetted floor only about 50cm, and the LCD screen packed up. We returned ours to Sony, but I'm too embarrassed to say how much it cost!! Paul

Thanks Alun - have to admit to feeling a bit jiggered at the moment...after an early start from home, down at the club at 0700hrs to row out to the boat..yes it sure was cold. The state of the chop in the swash and around Old Harry was unexpected - (best described as truly snotty) and kept our speed down to less than 15 knts - even so getting uncomfortable at times. When we got into bait collecting, we certainly started off well, feathering up a dozen or so mackerel off peverill ledge -also joined by two other charters -it was here that we had the first pollack mixed in with gars and mackerel. So good to have fresh bait. After that, the banks this time round were easy to anchor and fish - but I failed to get anything decent, just more mackerel, and dogfish, but nothing was in great abundance even though conditions looked really promising! Inshore for the flood, and Alun gets a decent bite and he jokes "10lb undulate", and sure enough up one comes... Then the last half hour or so drifting at peverel again, in a flat sea and warm sunshine.... lots more Pollack - decent size and another mackerel or so. All in all we did OK, though not in the target species, tried a few new spots (to me) Boat worked flawlessly, didnt break anything, back on the mooring by 1800hrs. Me 2 Doggies = 2pts 4 garfish = 10pts 4 Pollack = 25pts 4 mackerel = 5 pts Rays 4 species caught - bonus 20pts = total 62pts Paul

I'm planning on fishing my boat with Alun J - he doesnt know it yet!!! Look out you doggies - here we come.... Paul

Wow! these are massive... judging by how small that anode looks... no sign of the rocker switch controls and cables and hydraulics, but worth 99p at least. I'm more than happy with my trim tabs, but it was such a pain fitting them, 6 months on I'm now alot calmer, and will do a full photo shoot and write up for the forum with a few lessons learnt of course!! Hi Charlie We've recently been through this (every year for the past 3!) I suppose if its relatively straightforward, then you just need to get plan drawings of the existing house, and show how it will be extended in plan and section at 1:100 scale. But there are many ways to go about this. Theres the LA planning fee to pay (130 approx) - just bear in mind not to be in too much of a hurry to submit your application, as depending on whether Poole is as picky as NFDC, they will require another fee if you make even a small ammendment! So the message is get the clients approval (its her indoors, if you were in any doubt) before you write your cheque. Some of the other things we encountered - 1. 5 out of 7 Builders we approched wouldnt quote without approved building regulation drawings (but maybe it was quite complex) 2. Most builders couldnt give a t@@s about quoting work to any schedule - they seem to be able to pick and choose at the moment which ever is the more lucrative deal (sorry guys if any of you are in the trade) 3. Only one of the three bidders we had could start work within 3 months, most were 6-9 months lead time. If they are any good, then they always are in demand. 4. Our 'extension' required a piled foundation - OK so its not a big problem, until we found the building control dept, the original builder etc etc, have no record drawings of our existing design, so we couldnt put any more load onto it without spanning across onto new piles. (which was a no no considering the cost) 5. We found we are in a 'flood risk zone' see the Enironment agency website for details - you type your post code in and bingo! Theres another form to fill in and another fee. 6. be careful who you use if you know you have to prepare drawings for Building reg approval. There are many out there who will charge you for planning drawings and getting you to planning approval only. These drawings are nothing more than artists impressions - but if they are not good at what they do, then the guy doing the BR drawings will start from scratch, and if structurally, he has to do something fancy which changes the external elevations or plan, bingo, back to the LA with another cheque and 8 weeks wait for planning approval. 7. Pricing the works - cant be done without a material take off and BR drawings to any accuracy (Oh yes it can I hear you say). Just ask yourself, can I afford the risk? - if you can, then you can rely on less detail - but dont be surprised when the builder asks for more money, or stings you an outrageous amount for a tiny extra. 8. Dont use a mate to do the job, unless its shared work. We used a friend who tried to save us money by cutting corners, but in the end, he wasnt going to subsidise the project out of his own pocket and our costs were heading upwards - in the end we cancelled the project after having started major excavations. 9. After all this, my 'client' decided that she wasnt really sold on extending anyway and only wanted a conservatory ........and was only 'going along with it ' to make me happy!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhh I decided I'd be happier with an extension to my hobbies, and bought a larger boat.... 11. If you want to go the architect route - Nigel Ball associates 01425 613355 I would recommend - but fees to get you through building control could be 3% of the project cost, or 1500 and up whichever is the larger. Another more local man - Rodney Seal (chartered Architect)- 01202 734601. Hope this helps - its certainly helped me get this lot off my chest Regards Paul

Rob Looks really promising, only didnt see the brick wall, and the 1 1/2" plumbing fittings shown in the photo on your shoping list. Is the brick support optional? Paul

Went for another familly jolly round the harbour this afternoon - parked up at pottery pier, sea like a millpond - fantastic. In 1m of water, first cast, nice fat Mackerel on feathers. Unbelieveable - but then we did see shoals of fry in the water everywhere.... Paul F

I'll be there, on the M3.... Good Luck Paul... Paul F

Thanks to Alun for skippering.. the sole didnt show for us, but it was a perfect evening after that early rain shower passed over. Was more like p*ssed over actually, then a cold SE breeze sprung up first of the flood holding us uncomfortably across the tide and I thought it was set in for the evening. However the forecast was right for once, and the breeze quickly died away and the millpond resumed, so it was really idyllic conditions for Sole. Alun even had time to cast a plug or two before darkness, at some rises chasing the fry- probably small bass... but no takers unfortunately. We started downtide of our own groyne - all eleven boats we could see were huddled together literally 50yds apart but further to the west, so I suppose the sole were feeling pressurised up that end... From what I saw, there were few obvious features to fish to - not like previous years - alot of the sand seems to have gone. This may make them more spread out and less concentrated in one spot. Anyway, with all the other boats at anchor and so densely packed, it wasnt the done thing to use them like slalom posts on the downhill whilst watching the sounder... Would have been fun though!!! Chaps - thought I'd ask for advice, I made a gaff some time ago, from a broom handle, with a hook bolted through and wire siezed onto the end... Mainly to avoid the problem I had a few years ago with a conger which was larger than my net - there ensued a struggle with half a netted fish, a mono trace wrapped round my hand, and plenty of grunting. There's not been much conversation on this subject, but are these items considered necessary, as I know some skippers prefer to carry a long net ? Whats the best place to gaff a Conger? Ray? - and is this a reasonable thing to do for a fish you plan to weigh and release. No doubt, I'll be told... Thanks Paul F

Martiin Thanks for clarifying, fingers crossed for light winds. Paul F ps isnt friday night TV rubbish?

Whats the answer please ? Are the tides expected to be too big for the deep water off Anvil? Not sure from the posts which dates people are going for..... Thanks PaulF
