It sure is a much more compelling argument nowadays. The two main factors for me against outboards are how they effect the COG and balance of a boat (biggish, heavyish diesel engines mounted lower down and more forward than outboards) and the availablity and voilitile nature of petrol. Many marinas dont have petrol easy to acess as deisel is - and I'm a little bit nervous about having 300 litres of petrol under the deck! For boats under 20' that get used for shorter range trips the outboard always wins for me, but as you start to get into the bigger longer range, heavier boats diesels all the way. Another factor that is an interesting discussion is how charter boats manage to run up hundreds of thousands of hours on engines with little issue - yet us as relively infrequent users and with engines at the cheaper more basic end of the range seem to really suffer.

Wow! Mega expensive from Cummins. The Mercruiser 1.7dti is an Izuzi engine right? So as you say parts should be alot cheaper? I know youre in the trade nige, but I have a few contacts if I can help? Adam
  6. Ive always been a fan of the Abu Conolon / Suveran - in fact I've got 11 of them and counting! Until recently... Ive just bought a pair of Kenzaki's - would recommend then highly - if you want a lightweight rod to hold all day then these are the kiddies. Worth a look. BTW - Alderney Angling is the place to get them -
  7. I'll be out on JV mate - same plan as you, nice quiet roads then peace and quiet at sea. Heading west too, but may avoid the wreck you have in mind and stick to the bream.

A few weeks too late Brian & Tom - I just sold my 3 gun box. Suggest you keep and eye out here and here: http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...28-other-sales/ http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/forum...r-sale-section/ I bought both my 3 gun and 10 gun Brattonsound boxes off these forums for less than 1/2 of what they cost new - all collected within Dorset, they come up all the time.

The only 'known' fault I know of from looking at buying a 1.7dti Mercruiser a few years ago was caused by the heat due to the revs the little engine has to run to produce the HP - blown pistons etc... Hopefully you'll have a quicker easier fix being 'in the know' Good luck!
  12. Terry / Martin Can we get this moved to a new thread - with the amount of people going and all the weather planning, I can see us discussing crab cocktails with F3 SW and ebb tide medium rare steaks!
  13. Erm - thats one way of putting it! Basically as others have said, fast and comfortable dont go together with small fishing boats. If you want fast - youve got the right boat. If you want comfortable you'll need something fully dispacement, a good example would the 18' Plymouth Pilot - wont go much faster than 10 knots but smooth and comfortable. It's all a matter of compromise. Give the raider a few trips, they are a good boat and I'm sure youll get used to it. Adam
  14. Hi Jason, Saw your old boat out the other week. Hope your well. With the number of 165's in the club I'm sure someone would be willing to put their boat on a pontoon for a day if you cover the cost to allow you to use the trailer. Adam
  15. My obvious question although it doesnt help you - is didnt you have a ride before you bought it?! That aside - Ive not owned a radier 16, but a good mate has one and Ive fished from her many times. I wouldnt say the ride was hard, not as hard as a full catherdral hull, but as she has a gullwing hull (a half way house between a V and trihull / catherdral) a raider 16 will slap and bang a bit. My other point is that she is only 16' but feels bigger, so dont expect the ride of a bigger vessel. Finally - if youre used to ribs, almost anything will feel hard - they are very, very soft riding. Your set-up sounds fine to me. Adam

  20. Guys, I cant find the fact sheet I did a few years ago, so Ive done another one. Hopefully the download link will work!! Adam
  21. For those of you who werent at the meeting last night: I've spoken with Mainbrayce. The current diesel rate is 97p per ltr - they will do us a 10% discount for our journey. Petrol isnt yet fully available in the marina by pump - they do have a 300l tank which you can decant from. So you'll need cans if you run petrol. There is now only 1 petrol station in Alderney and it closes at 12am! We have a special rate on the water taxi -
